  1. ]i have a feeling the "attempt to get out of the way" rule or the "its a strike if you're over the plate" rule werent enforced even then. Interesting look at HBPs over time here Hunt's era was while HBPs overall were in a period of a mini-boomlet - but not nearly as high as they were earlier in the century or where they are NOW!!!!, the highest rate they've ever been. Lotsa speculation in the article as to the whys and wherefores of the ups & downs over the years although it's tough to nail down specific cause & effect type of proofs.
  2. "Lolich at 170" And when he put the other foot on the scale? There are most likely a whole slew of guys whose records carry their rookie weight (or even minor league weight) around forever.
  3. Actually, I was directing that line at Sen Kerry in a lame attempt to emulate the time the same line was said to Sen Joe McCarthy under very different circumstances ... but it works for MadDog too. Or maybe; 'Have you no brains, Sir?' would work even better in his case.
  4. And for extending his streak of not being suspended or under threat of banishment for acts both illegal and immoral up to double-digit years.
  5. Kerry: "I am opposed to anything that deprives people of reasonable choices, ... a Red Sox fan ought to be able to watch their team without having to switch to DirecTV." Does that go for Patriot fans too Senator, or is the NFL somehow exempt from offering "reasonable choices"? This sort of duplicity drives me nuts. I'm all for the gov't looking into the ethics of this (although I suspect there's nothing legally that can be done) - but radio talk show hosts (not just M&MD) have been conducting virtual daily commercials for DirecTV over the last few years since the NFL started offering their "Sunday Ticket" package, giving testimonials to listeners that DirecTV is the only way to go due to the glories of "Sunday Ticket". Now, not only are some of the same voices tripping over themselves to knock MLB for going the same route but we have elected officials doing the same. Have you no sense of decency, sir?
  6. ]How are they misunderstanding it? They were confused as to this affecting the 'Extra Innings' package and, were instead, seemingly under the impression that MLB was somehow trying to prevent ALL telecasts from going out of market; ie. stopping Yanqui games from appearing on 'YES' broadcasts except on systems within the NYC area, etc. I know they've been in Florida all week talking SB 24/7 but it's not like this issue has been kept secret for the last 10 days or so. Also, now that I think about it, night-time host Steve Somers was totally unaware of the issue also the other night when asked about it by a caller - although in his case I'm used to him being clueless & uninformed. M&MD, to their credit, are usually up to date on their facts before staking out an elistist's positions.
  7. "Lee Mazzilli in Juarez, Mexico with the Jackson Mets in 1976" and it's Eastertime too
  8. And, gee whiz, what a shock that Mike & the Mad Dog are: A) just now getting word of this misunderstanding it C) dismissing it as "not a big deal"
  9. Figuring on MLB's penchant for putting AS games in new stadiums, NYC could conceivably see 3 AS games in the next decade after having just one over the last 43 years.
  10. signs a minor legue deal, ending a not very pretty chapter of Met-hood.
  11. Well it certainly wasn't a good season. Closers with seasons of near 1.5 WHiP, ~4.00 ERA, and 20+% blown saves don't gain too many fans.
  12. FK/VS similarity scores skyrocket ... perhaps on account of Vic being in his 'McReynolds' stage (heh, heh, heh)
  13. Glavine Hernandez Perez Maine Williams Williams has himself a decent enough ST to gain a spot but one on a short leash as Pelfrey & Humber start in N'awlins until ready to get eased in at the first stumble and/or injury. Sele isn't on the roster yet so would need to have a GREAT!!! ST in order to get added to the squad and I don't know that he still has it in him. Vargas is the dark horse.
  14. Except that a lot of what this is about is an apparent quid pro quo with DirecTV to save a spot for the MLB channel when it launches. The cable systems, who have managed to resist putting the NFL & NBA channels on their main tier quite easily, wouldn't be expected to lay down the red carpet when baseball comes knocking with their new toy either. The NOT suprising part in all this that (as usual) baseball is getting killed in the media for considering doing what football has been doing all along; ie, giving DirecTV an exclusive on the out-of-town package while trying to blame cable companies for "depriving" customers of the NFL channel. The NFL, of course, comes off critisism-free in the whole deal. Now I suppose one could argue that MLB deserves worse as it initially sold their package to both cable & satellite and then pulled back, but I'm not sure that that's neccesarily worse than never offering it to one segment from the beginning.
  15. ... talks with Boston have ended and "there will be no further discussions." Not real clear if this one ever was close to happening. But if it once was, it now isn't.
  16. There's also a gap between what Berra actually said and what the Berra legend says he said. And the odds of finding evidence of the exact quote plus where and when it originated are getting smaller as the line between Yogi the colorful catcher and Yogi the highly marketed enterprise has become blurrier in recent years.
  17. Yes. They're the NY/NJ entry in the MLS. Formerly the 'Metro Stars', they were re-named last year (in a leap of creeping commercialism) when purchased by the Austrian firm which distributes the energy drink.
  18. From his first try with the Blue Jays: "The only thing was, when we interviewed him, he didn't, at that point, really have a game plan for what he wanted to do as a manager ... Without any minor-league track record of managing a ballclub, and without, in his own mind, a formulated game plan of how he would do it, it was tough to take a chance at that point." On such comments are reputations such as; 'I hear he doesn't interview well', are born. Reps like that are then often repeated with each successive non-hire whether it was true in that case or not.
  19. btw, Davidoff accepts suggestions for his weekly 'Pop Quiz' - so if you have any tidbits about ballplayers connections to the world of the silver screen or the small screen you can send them along if see if he uses it.
  20. Yes it would
  21. Davey Johnson was also very much behind that deal. Not that he had the power to make it, but stories at the time had him very much pushing fot it or at least for some version of it.
  22. I would've gone 0-fer-12 on that one. Try this one which was Ken Davidoff's weekly "Pop Quiz". He's been running these for at least a year now (I should steal them for a reg feature here) where he asks about a baseball figure who fits into a pop culture trivia question somehow. Anyway, this week's was: What memeber of the 1960's Mets appeared in several films with Gene Hackman, often as his stand-in?
  23. Nymr83 wrote: I'd hardly consider Drew a lock to repeat that number ... Drew career OBPs: .340 .401 .414 .349 .374 .436 .412 .393 Rough avg ~ .390 Say what you want about Drew's injuries, attitude, 'toughness', or whatever, but he gets on base and can be a terrific offensive force when he's on.
  24. It's no secret that the forever rebuilding Rockies would like to get out from under Todd Helton's contract - they've even said so publicly and may be willing to pay around half his remaining money to make it happen. Boston has been a rumored destination - possibly because it now seems mandatory to mention them as a possibility for all deals. Now Helton's not the player he used to be - most notably his power is absent - but could still be a bargain at half the price. Now NYDN's Bill Madden is saying that Helton to BoSox may be closer to reality than previously thought. "The essence of the trade is in place," says a source. "But they're haggling over Boston prospects." ... which, admittedly, is still a big tripping point. BUT, if it does happen, it would give to Sox one helluvan 'OBP' run in the top/middle of their order (in whatever order you want to put them). 2006 figures: Manny = .439 (best in MLB) Ortiz = .413 Youkilis = .381 Drew = .393 Helton = .409 (all top 30 in MLB) Fuckin Wow!
  25. I don't think that comes as a surprise to anyone. The problem in my mind all along was not that Kazmir should be untouchable but rather in over-projecting what they thought Zambrano was/would become. What Met fans really need to do at this point is ... Let ... It .. Go. Or, we could all make it real simple and just do what Joe Badabingo does: For about 2 years after that trade he asked everyone he ever interviewed; writers, announcers, Met mgmt, execs from other teams, etc., whether it was Rick Peterson who ordered Kaz dealt. Every answer he ever got - including from Peterson himself - was that RP had little or nothing to do with it, that his only input was in thinking that Zambrano is someone he could work with -- the infamous "10 minutes" comment which was first leaked then overblown as the bad pr started coming down the pike. And then, after each interview, Joe would hang up the phone and say; 'well I don't care what anyone says, it was all Peterson's doing'. Nothing like a search for the truth.
