  1. IMO: Rollins Holliday Wright Fielder
  2. HoF players - or probable *future members - ranked by their contributions to NYM baseball as per their status in the CPF Rankings project: Tom Seaver * Tom Glavine (est finish depending on final 2007 results) Gary Carter * Pedro Martinez - will likely pass Ryan w/his 2007 points ... with potential to rise further in coming year(s) Nolan Ryan Eddie Murray * (?) Joe Torre * Rickey Henderson Willie Mays Richie Ashburn Warren Spahn Yogi Berra's 8 NYM ABs did not earn him a place on the list
  3. Not really. Carter, like Glavine, spent five seasons w/the Mets, but only 3 of his were any good and in his final one he contributed virtually nothing. So if you want to measure the comparitive Met-ness of their careers by the CPF rankings system (and really, why would one use anything else?) Glavine looks like he'll nudge ahead of Carter by several slots.
  4. I think that Glavine, like a lot of imported players who came over to mixed (at best) reactions, was not nearly as good as we hoped but overall wasn't as bad as many will portray. The bad first and last impressions don't help either.
  5. Oh I agree with all of that and have no intention of building the guy up as some sort of heroic or mystic figure. But part of what drew Krakauer to the story was the striking rememberences people had of him even those who just knew him in passing - while also making no secret of the fact that he saw a lot of his own youthful self in the kid. I just didn't think - as Sharpie did - that the movie presented an image of him that was a whole lot different from that in the book.
  6. My bad. I read it quickly, saw Oakland and assumed California. Not defendable votes IMO. * Hey, I Gotta Believe I just became Tug!
  7. To no one's surprise it's ARod - although to mine it was NOT unanimous. Magglio Ordonez gets 2 1st place votes (1 from a Detroit writer) while finishing 2nd overall Ortiz was 3rd That's his 3rd MVP award, the 9th guy to win more than 2.
  8. I think what he means is that two years of the contract will be eat-able if he sucks half way through - although $12+ mil is a helluva big lunch. btw, Mets are still saying that this is NOT a done deal.
  9. sharpie wrote: I liked the book which didn't make him out to be some sort of holy shaman but a confused kid with a strong sense of himself. Maybe not quite a shaman, but the book does portray the kid as someone who often had a profound effect on those he met during his trek, particularly on the older man who wanted to legally adopt him after spending just a few weeks with him. Then, upon learning about his death, was affected enough to renounce his religion as well as go back to drinking after swearing off decades earlier. I didn't think the movie went overboard in playing up that angle.
  10. And just think, after we incorporate our 2007 rankings into the existing list and then recalculate the whole thing, Glavine will move up a handful of spots (looks like to around 29th) meaning that you'll eventually get to be him again!!
  11. ^ Soupy dissing Tom Glavine while being Tom Glavine ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^
  12. Health is part of it - although he already had a procedure to fix whatever was bothering him with his knees and maybe getting off the Minny turf helps too - but I'm at least as worried about the fact that he really isn't all that good. The per/year money is probably about what he deserves, but he's still essentially the worst slugger in the league and has only decent (tho hardly great) BA/OBA numbers in recent seasons. If his singles/on base skills dip down just another few clicks toward mediocre then he becomes decidedly sub-par, heading for mid-30s, MI-er w/NO power and declining speed with several years left on a contract that probably can't be traded for much. Granted that some of the above is worst-case scenario - but I don't think it's all that far-fetched. Met fans & media types seem to be mostly A-OK with this deal while downright giddy about the one for Torreabla falling through (even before the shoulder questions) but there are also fewer other options at catcher than there are at 2B.

  15. ]I thought they offered him more the first time? The deal the Yanx were reportedly going to offer but never did (since ARod/Boras refused to talk to them before opting out) was a 5-year extension (so 8 years altogether) at something in the $220-240 range - but of course about $20-some mil of that was being footed by the Rangers. That this new $275/10 deal (w/incentives that could take it over $300) is being spun as an ARod/Boras concession and one that "makes up for" the lost Texas money sounds like one big P.R. job to me.
  16. Assuming this is accurate, the timing of the deal is good as it means the Mets can safely offer arbitration when the deadline comes around and snag draft picks out of the deal. Braves pick is #18 overall too which is almost the best pick one can pick up.
  17. At least twice as long as I would have preferred - but whatyagointodo?
  18. ]The way I see the problem is a lot of what we have to offer is very similar to what Milwaukee already has. I figured I could pry away Sheets because he is in his walk year and may look for more money than the Brewers are willing to pay in '09. Milwaukee could use a real CFer IMO. They used Bill Hall out there last year after Hardy moved him off of SS. He's one of those good all-around athletes they hoped could man the position while keeping his bat in the lineup, but that's a tough position to fake and I think most Brew-fans would admit he was lacking out there at times. What that implies is that maybe they could be tempted with either Gomez or Milledge (not that either of them are proven gloves either - but they're at least promising) for either pitching, or maybe Weeks, or even Hall himself. Hall played SS for a while so shirley he could give 2B a go. Gallardo is, of course, not someone they're even going to discuss.
  19. ="Edgy DC"]="Frayed Knot"]Barrett (and his sub-.300 OBA) and Jason (no power) Kendall are Type 'A' FAs and would cost a 1st round draft pick. Other targets will cost trade bait which may or may not be good deals in the long run. If they're offered arbitration, right? Well sure (and it turns out only Barrett is Type A) but the point being that before we celebrate the demise of this deal we should realize the cost of Yorvit's "replacement" is likely to be as high or higher than what some were balking at here - either in picks, in money, in players, or in some combination of all three. Just as LoDuca's acquisition, though not a FA deal, involved more money (although for just 2 years) plus two prospects, one of which a promising one. Most of the other suggestions are older than Torreabla too.
  20. * The only report I heard had Torrealba back in Venezuela which indicates that whatever broke up this deal wasn't a physical. * As unexciting as this potential deal was, I'm not rejoicing at its demise. YT's offense was only slightly below that of LoDuca, was nearly 7 years younger, cheaper (peeps seem to forget PLD cost ~$6.5mil), and was to arrive at the cost of nothing but money. I would have prefered a 2 year deal to 3, but other than that it was hardly a horrible move. * Barrett (and his sub-.300 OBA) and Jason (no power) Kendall are Type 'A' FAs and would cost a 1st round draft pick. Other targets will cost trade bait which may or may not be good deals in the long run. * So while Yorvit was hardly a sexy name (in more ways than one) it's not like reliable starting catchers are falling out of trees and the return of LoDuca (assuming bridges haven't been burned) is as mediocre as any of the other obvious moves IMO.
  21. ]These ballots are anonymous aren't they? The BBWA doesn't attach names to ballots although many of the writers willingly publish their own picks when they have one. Who votes for which award is on a rotating basis although some newspapers (NY Times for one) bar their folks from participating to avoid any appearance of conflict of interest.

I'm not quite sure where this idea started that every Japanese player signed was supposed to be some kind of superstar. Aside from Kaz, none of the others were billed, promoted, promised or paid as anything other than role players. With pitching, 2nd base & catching up in the air, I don't see them chasing after FA OFers as a top priority. I'd prefer Milledge getting a shot at this point and no move should be made with Fernando Martinez in mind. He'll be here when he's ready which could be anywhere between a year from now and never.
  23. ]...but how much more awesome does Tulowitski have to be to offset the offensive difference? I'm not even claiming that Tulowitski deserved to win, only if/how many voters even considered the defensive aspect of the game. My guess: not many

  25. You wonder if any of the voters even considered defense when casting their ballots. Not only does Tulowitski play the tougher position, but the difference between the skill level of the two isn't just a gap, it's a fuckin chasm. Braun can hit like hell but is a BRUTAL glove man.
