No one is re-evaluating the strength of the farm system based on what's at Kingsport, or the GCL, or the Dominican Leagues. Even with the handful of "top" guys - and BA doesn't really 'know' any of them, they're just repeating scuttelbutt from scouts and front office types - they'll note the singings and then essentially say 'let's look at this in two years and see how it's going'
The int'l market is generally the furthest thing from a "quick fix". Most kids are the equivelent of HS sophmores and the idea is to sign a bunch of them with hopes that, after planting them in your academy along with proper watering and so on, one or two will blossom into something a few years down the road. Throwing a bunch of money at one or two might get you a higher ceiling guy but it's a sttrategy that misses [u:5f9ea71758]A LOT[/u:5f9ea71758] more often than it hits.
"one of my gutless, sycophantic counterparts (yeah, I'm talking about you, Adam)" Wow! I don't think I've ever read that sort of thing in print before. Olberman's one thing. He's a TV guy who is so used to both receiving and sending verbal bombs (mostly with/at O'Reilly) that it's not a big deal. But between guys who at least occasionally have to share the same room it's not your everyday thing. Now I have no idea who this guy is but I'll assume he's more of an occasional baseball writer dropping in for the BIG story of manager changing rather than an everyday beat guy. All of which means that we probably shouldn't waste our time scanning the press box tonight looking for fist fights amongst lap-top toting scribes. Although if it does occur I hope Gary gives us some good play-by-play.

Dickey's had 3 starts this season prior to tonight: - 6 IP; 5 ER, 8 H, 2 BB, 2 K - 1.2 IP; 7 ER, 8 H, 2 BB; 1 K - 3.2 IP; 5 ER; 6 H; 4 BB; 4 K - and now tonight. He does have 2 seperate 5+ IP scoreless relief outings, but c'mon.
So of the top picks that leaves their 2nd rounder unsigned (4th team pick - #68 overall) - OFer Javier Rodriguez from Puerto Rico as well as their 4th rounder (6th team pick - 134th overall) OFer Sean Ratliffe from Stanford. Otherwise, 9 of the first 11 are in the fold and 13 of the top 16. Elsewhere, little of the 1st round has signed although the top overall pick inked up unusually early this year.
He's a freakin knuckleballer - so the range is anywhere between a 2-hit CG shutout and gone by the 3rd down by 7 after 8 hits, 6 BBs, 3 PBs and 2 HBPs.
]"Sometimes [Drew] and guys like Adam Dunn start their at bats [with runners in scoring postion] thinking to themselves 'Am I going to swing or take if the count gets to 3-2.'" Folks accused Ted Williams of much the same; not being agressive at times during situations that called a big hit rather than a pass-it-to-the-next-guy walk. How does one Know that? ... well they don't, but I suspect Phillips here is inferring a few things about their mindset based on past observation. A bit of commentator's license perhaps but I've heard a lot worse from talking heads and wouldn't pick this one to go nuts about. P.S. I have no idea what those pictures are all about either.
]If we're talking about the Pacman Jones comment - no, he wasn't trying to be funny, he was serious when he said it. It was a matter-of-fact statement made during the news. Yeah he was. It started with Warner Wolf referencing Pacman's history in nightclubs which led to an Imus (sarcastic) reply along the lines of; hell it's a nightclub, there are guns and women and drinks all over the place, let's cut this guy (Pacman) some slack WW: "Yeah but he's been arrested 7 times since [whenever]" Imus: "Well, what color is he?" -- implying that the arrests were because he's black WW: "He's African-American" Imus: "Well there you go"
="soupcan"]I think the difference is that Stern was obviously doing it for comedic effect and Imus was being serious. Without getting into a whole inane Imus-v-Stern debate, of course Imus was also attempting comedy. The reason the last incident stirred up a shit-storm is that the ones he picked on: a) did nothing to deserve it and were a group the media found easy to get behind, seeing as they were: female, minorities (mostly), students, and not only members of a winning local sports team but an amateur one to boot (at least to the extent that any college hoops team is amatuer) Comedic barbs are treated very differently depending on whether or not the public/media views the target(s) as sympathetic.

="Grote15"]Think I'd rather have Carlos Lopez back and the three pitchers...Oh I forgot Lopez is the goods and will be a yankee in 4 years If you're going to pine for players gone away at least get their names right.
Wright's numbers don't look too bad because he managing to get his one hit per game and usually an RBI to go with it, but his power for the last month or so is virtually non-existant. Isolated power numbers: April: .250 May: .243 June: .063 I mean that's like Luis Castillo slugging.
I remember Bob Gibson getting injured in a game while base-running. He tried to change direction and collapsed in a heap for the final out of the inning as his leg buckled. He, like Hernandez, tried taking his warm-ups the next inning and again crumpled like a rag doll on his first try. I think it turned out to be a broken leg (or something equally serious) which caused him to miss a chunk of time afterward and maybe even the balance of the season. But Bob was not going to go willingly.
