  1. If you get Cameron it's to play CF. Hermida is strictly a corner guy (and not a very good one at that). The main loser here is Ellsbury.
  2. Was Lackey a pressing need for the Sox?.... Considering that Beckett's deal runs out after 2010 and that they weren't all that close to the Yanx this season ... in their mind I'm sure that makes it a 'yeah'. I love the Sox pitching...but if their Bay money is going to Lackey, I'm not all that impressed with their returning offense. No Bay, no Lowell (although questions in the physical are holding up that deal), a declining Ortiz, a virtually finished Varitek, plus their 3rd long-term commitment to a SS* in the last 5 years ... yeah, I'd say there are questions. * Rentirea, then Lugo, now Scutaro -- hopefully, for them, they won't have to pay this one off to go away
  3. A former 1st round (supp) draft pick, he was once a 'can't touch' prospect for the Sawx who got touched anyway in 2003 in the Curt Schilling deal. A year later he was being dealt to Tampa for Jose Cruz Jr. Two years after that he was being released. The Tigers will be his 5th ML squad since then and 8th overall. I heard he even played for the Mets briefly but I can't confirm such rumors.
  4. "... and, just then, Beltran pulls Reyes's chair out sending Jose flying naked into the table and ass-first onto his birthday cake! Oh man you shoulda been there."
  5. Reed had a pretty good PH average IIRC -- problem was they were all singles which pretty much limited his usefulness to late-inning OF defense and when you had to PH to lead off an inning.
  6. I don't know what happened to Garrett Atkins. Over the last four years he's gone: BA: .309 - .301 - .286 - .226 OBA: .409 - .367 - .328 - .308 SLG: .556 - .486 - .452 - .342 Walk rate: .100 - .066 - .042 - .082 IsoP: .247 - .185 - .166 - .116 and that's all at Coors!! - even though I know Coors is now 'Coors-Light' these days what with the humidor and all that, but still! Plus he was playing every day (over 600 PAs) during each of those years until this last one (still had 400 PAs) so it's not one of those cases where you could claim he was getting burned by a manager who had no faith in him or something. If anyone gets half a clue as to get him even partially turned around he'd make a good 1B platoon/RH-PH guy who could give Wright the occasional day off. Turned 30 yesterday.
  7. I'm not sure what to think of CM Wang. Poor guy just hasn't been the same since the rules in that mean old non-DH league bit him back in 2008. But, even when he was good, I always had this feeling (partially hope maybe) that he was both benefitting from the team around him and walking a fine line that could fall apart around him at a moment's notice. The lack of strike-outs were always a concern. But as his walk-rate started climbing over the last few years it left his superior ground ball ratio as the only support on his three-legged stool. So even if that somehow reappears once (and if) he gets healthy I still fear that he's on the razor's edge of being an, at best, ordinary hurler.
  8. Holliday/Boras are probably also looking for a longer term deal. I think that probably tilted the Mets mind towards Bay as much as anything.
  9. MLB.TV is replaying the 1999 Play-in game vs the Reds NOW!!!! Just tuned in. 4-0 Mets in the 6th ... oops, 5-0 as Fonzie doubles. Leiter has a 1-hitter thru 5.
  10. Ayyy matey, he's a Pirate now!! Picked 2nd overall in the Rule 5 draft. Folks who follow this stuff seem to think he's got one of the best chances of sticking w/his new club and, of course, the rules of his acquisition are an incentive for the club to keep him around for the year.
  11. I remember when Everts was drafted. That he went 10 spots ahead of Kazmir was more a reflection of perceived contract demands then they're standing as amateur prospects (iow, Everts was an "over-draft", picked that high to save money on a real 5th overall choice). He still was a legit 1st round pick, just not a top-10 guy. Several injuries have cropped up since.
  12. Meanwhile, the Mets go wild in the AAA phase of the draft, choosing RHP John Lujan from the White Sox, 1B Marshall Hubbard from the Mariners, RHP Rolando Valdez from the Astros, and LHP Orlando Lara from the Padres And then in AA phase - RHP Johan Figuereo from the Nationals
  13. It's been described the whole time as the Nats [u:3hq0kmli]trading the pick[/u:3hq0kmli] - so I guess that's allowed in Rule 5 land since, unlike the amateur (Rule 4) draft, there's one set price for all picks.
  14. Mike Lowell headed to Texas for Max Ramirez - a just-turned-25 y/o mostly minor league catcher. Deal still needs approval from MLB as the Sox will need to kick in much of Lowell's ~$12mil money for the final year of his contract. Texas expected to use Lowell as 1B/DH
  15. The 2-run 8th plus an Armando save (but I thought he always ...) for the only WS game we won in the noughties oughta qualify.
  16. Santana's gem from 2008 that temporarily saved the season (actually put off the inevitable). 9/27/08 -- http://www.leaptoad.com/mets/gamedetail.php?gameno=7555 Geremi Gonzalez gives up 4 in the 1st to the Yanx, Mets come back with 3 in their half off Sour Unit ... Wright wins it w/a walk-off double off Mariano in the 9th following a 3-K top of the 9th from Wagner 5/19/06 -- http://www.leaptoad.com/mets/gamedetail.php?gameno=7101
  17. I'll give him this: he takes his walks and more than half his hits over the last few years have gone for extras. Of course that gets balanced out by a low BA and about 1/3 of ABs winding up as Ks ... but whatyougonnado? TTO!
