  1. Of course the Mets didn't 'announce' anything. I don't think we've heard a word about this yet from them, especially seeing as how this isn't official until next week (if then). Now, you've probably got a pretty good case to make that the leak was timed just so - but even then there still had to be an agreement on the player's end so it's not something the club could just conger up on their own.
  2. I'm sure Pagan can play RF if needed. But I also think he needs more than several partial seasons before we can know what he is. In the meantime he's worth keeping around unless he can be spun off to someone who sees him as a full-time CFer. Dealing him as a part-timer isn't going to net you much in which case he's more valuable hanging around Queens.
  3. Also makes a difference that Cora plays SS. Johnson played it in the minors but not once in the majors and wasn't exactly a great 2B IIRC so I don't see him going back there for anything other than a short-term emergency. Like it or not, every team needs a back-up capable of playing SS for weeks at a time and most of them hit like Alex Cora.
  4. Heard someplace that Sheets is getting ready to throw for teams "in the next few weeks" -- so maybe mid-January I reckon. Assuming he looks halfway decent then, that's not too late to get him a contract and into camp by reporting time but it doesn't exactly leave a lot of wiggle room either. But, in the meantime, any thoughts, hopes, bids, contracts, etc., on him are going to be on hold for a little while longer.
  5. Would any of them come here?
  6. That's more money than he deserves, IMO, but whatyagonnado?
  7. I guess that means that the mets won't bend over backwards for molina.... that's one positive... Both halves of that are positive as far as I'm concerned (with the usual caveat of the price for Bay not being too high) It's also a lot more info than I expected. Even considering that nothing he said is fact at this point, I didn't even expect it to be anything about players. All of which leads me to wonder how and where he got his info and why he felt so confident sitting on it for nearly 24 hours. What it adds up to, IMO, is a bone thrown to him by Omar personally.
  8. and the announcement iiiiiiiissssssss [drum roll] ... 1) Molina still holding out for a 3rd year - still quite a ways apart 2) Bay signing will be official by next week - physicals pending etc.

  10. Any real "breaking" story wouldn't be sat on for 24 hours (particularly with this leak-happy front office) - which means this will more likely fall under the category of "announcement" rather than earth-shattering event. - I'm guessing plans will be revealed for the NYM HoF or some other such stadium-related news ? Oodles of Met fans will, of course, take this tease as a promise of a major FA signing, massive trade, front office reshuffling, and/or (their real wet dream) team sale and proceed to use the lack of 'bigness' of the real actual announcement to claim victim status as they were - once again - lied to, over-sold, and mis-led.
  11. I read it as: * "We are pursuing Matt Holliday," -- Translation: despite what you may have heard, we're not exclusively Bay-ophiles * "It seems to be easier to make a deal for Jason Bay -- Translation: we pursued Bay earlier and harder because we assumed a deal for him would come easier ... IOW, no Boras
  12. having constructed this list and looked at everyone else's, I'm convinced this was a bad decade for movies compared to both the 80's and 90's. That was essentially my point all along. Hell, I did a quickie search of just '71-'74 and came up with: French Connection, Last Picture Show, Cabaret, Godfather, Deliverance, Jerimiah Johnson, American Graffiti, Mean Streets, Papillon, The Sting, Godfather Part II, Chinatown, The Conversation, ... and obviously a bunch more. I really hate to sound like one of those 'it was all better in the old days' types and I know the movie biz (and society) has changed and there are a bunch of reasons for the disparity between eras ... but Geez!
  13. You saw what you saw and by that have concluded that players all over MLB are of a collective mindset to refuse to come here for fear of their health based on ... ummm, Bay not signing yet?
  14. Nice prospect but not top 20 material. Top 50 maybe.
  15. I'd take a look at Byrd too. A once-heralded prospect who took a long while to finally make it and is 4 years younger than Winn. Probably not as good defensively (although I bet it's close) and doesn't run as well, but out-hit him over the last 3 seasons (.295/.352/.468 vs .290/.344/.410) particularly with power (IsoP = .173 vs .120) although, granted, in a much better hitter's park. Still, the OPS+ is supposed to take care of the park/lg factor and Byrd (112, 121, 106) is not only better than Winn (104, 105, 75) over the last few seasons but also isn't coming off a year with an off-the-table fall.
  16. Part of the reason is probably because Valverde is one of three remaining FAs that will cost the singing team a draft pick - Bay & Holliday are the others.
  17. I didn't mind 'Knocked Up' (not bad - not great) - it's just that the contrast between the rest of his list and that one struck me as funny. You can almost hear the guy thinking: Yes, I prefer all these foreign language arty films that, unlike me, you unwashed type don't have the intellect or the breeding to appreciate. Oh yeah, and that Apatow guy and his band of horny low-brow post-teens just slay me!
