  1. Gee, Gee, Gee You're a strike-throwing machine And no matter where we've played you by the Texas clan that made you You're a better man than Maine is Dillon Gee
  2. It's always stunning when players don't know the rules that many of us have known since we were little kids - but it's far more common than we like to think. Just because you can play the game doesn't mean you're the same kind of fan of the game as ... well, fans as are. I swear football players are the worst, maybe because their jobs are so specialized that when something happens even slightly out of the ordinary for their position they're totally clueless as to what's going on. I've faked guys out in softball games w/the IFR; you allow a ball to drop and then catch the ones who think they have to run as soon as it hits the dirt. Result (usually) = DP On FAN Sat morning, Richard Neer and Eddie C. were talking about it and neither one knew whether runners needed to tag up in order to advance on a dropped ball under IFR conditions [no, only if it's caught to you need to tag up in order to advance]
  3. Rockin' Doc wrote: Torre never seemed to mind the "circus" atmosphere in NY when he was managing those clowns in the Bronx. Actually he kind of did. Whenever the Yanx would play in the reg season subway series, or against the BoSox, or against any team actually fighting for a playoff spot, Torre and the team openly resented the extra media attention that would come their way. They preferred their regular season to be calm and hassle-free, especially seeing as how it was just a bother on the way to October anyway. No one bothered them during June match-ups with the Royals or Mariners unless they were careless enough to lose 2 of 3. And in the 2000 WS the team from the Bronx basically put up a media embargo and forced all the scribes to go over to the NYM locker room for their quotes.
  4. .500 record and a +10 run differential (74-64) Also out of the cellar (passed Braves) and potentially the Nationals (tied w/the Dojers and heading for extras)
  5. Look at me I'm Dillon Gee
  6. Maine - 1.0 Takahashi - 3.1 Feliciano - 0.4 Rodriguez - 0.3 Reyes - 1.7 Wright - 1.2 Bay - 0.8 Davis - 1.0 Pagan - 0.5
  7. Teixeira was probably just pissed because he had been plunked. Or maybe it's because he's hitting .117 The act of plowing over the catcher itself wasn't particularly dirty but when he's giving you the plate it's not necessary. In the end, I doubt he winds up getting suspended - and maybe not even fined - but it's exactly the type of play the Yanx themselves would scream about if it were to happen to them; How dare you do that to us!!
  8. I didn't (and don't) listen to Kay/LaG but I can only imagine that their "logic" went something along the lines that, because Reyes is fast, he can only be successful as a slappy/bunty type hitter therefore he must hit lead-off because that's the only way he can use his speed and be "dynamic". I half expect that sort of stuff from Kay who either actually believes it or is just so totally ignorant of NL ball that he just assumes it. But if LaGreca is supposedly a Met fan and is none-the-less towing that same barge then he should simply be ruled too stupid to make his living behind a microphone.
  9. Could you imagine what 'The Dude', or, even worse, John Goodman's character, would do if someone in an adjacent lane started their bowling approach at the same time?!?!
  10. Well, if the guys don't hit it's not going to matter what order they're put in. I can't call it desperation seeing as how I've been for getting Reyes off the lead-off spot for about 2 years now, although maybe Jerry sees it that way and is only doing it because he's out of other ideas.
  11. BA is back with their 'Hot List' - a round-up of who's hot over the previous week in minor league ball Wilmer Flores - Met, South Atlantic Lg - Age: 18 Why He's Here: .370/.481/.741 (10-for-27), 2 HR, 4 2B, 11 RBIs, 6 R, 3 BB, 5 SO The Scoop: Flores struck out for the first time this season last Friday, in his ninth game. But as his contact rate has declined since then, his power has spiked through the roof. Six extra-base hits and 11 RBIs in a week would have been practically unheard of last season, but it could be a sign of a more mature Flores learning to identify pitches he can drive and not simply swinging at the first thing near the zone. Bear in mind, he hit all of three home runs in 488 at-bats for Savannah last season.
  12. The one audio clip I heard involved ARod claiming he had never heard of the "rule" about not crossing the mound. The thing is, I could see him both being clueless enough to be in his 17th year of pro ball and not know that, as well as arrogant enough to know it full well but figure that he's ARod and this no-name pitcher doesn't get to tell him what to do. So either way he's a dope.
  13. attgig wrote: I wonder with these secrets, if teams are actually tracking their own players' routes in the outfield, etc and just not sharing it with anyone. insert chip into the top of the teams' baseball caps and track movements... see how good these fielders really are... that's the first thing I think I would do... Not exactly chip implants, but your idea is sort of the way things are headed. The move recently has been to track the positioning and movements of fielders as well as the speed and direction of hits via Questec-style camera triangulation so as to get a better handle on who's actually covering more ground and getting to more balls.
  14. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Wright 5th, I'm guessing. I'm thinking fourth as Bay looks at least as confused as Dabid. Something along the lines of: Pagan Castillo Reyes Wright Bay Francoeur Davis Catcher Pitcher might even swap Davis & Francoeur if a RHP is going
  15. Santana - 4.3 Rodriguez - 1.5 Davis - 1.7 Wright - 1.0 Reyes - 0.25 Barajas - 0.5 Francoeur - 0.75
  16. Adam Rubin: The game's consummate leadoff hitter is headed to the No. 3 hole in the New York Mets' lineup. Manager Jerry Manuel has informed Jose Reyes that he intends to bat the shortstop third this weekend against the Atlanta Braves in an attempt to jumpstart the team's dormant offense. "I said, 'Whatever is best for the team, I'm going to do it,'" Reyes told ESPNNewYork.com. "I don't have any problem." Way to get radical Jerry.
  17. I was going to say, if that's someone from the media they should be fired. Players I expect it from.
  18. Who's laughing, some of his team-mates or a few of the media I wonder?
  19. Nice two-out insurance run guys.
  20. The system kind of plays into that, doesn't it? I mean, if he was a Latino, he'd be playing pro ball and haviing the occasional humbling experience or getting promoted to a level where he'd find some. Here he's playing a level where the competition is a plaything. I think we all know what how jock dominance can feed teenage entitlement. Sure, but Mauer was all-world in several sports at the same age and (as mentioned in the article above) is considered the total opposite. I had never heard this about Harper before but Goldstein talks to a ton of people about prospects and I assume isn't the type to simply swallow the opinions of one crotchety scout and repeat it as if universal fact. And on a semi-related topic, Steven Strasburg was just on BB2N and, in civvies, is a totally unremarkable looking specimen. Maybe it was just the camera angles but Aaron Boone looked bigger and fitter.
  21. A low strike makes up for the lack of a high one earlier.
