  1. Thought we were going to pull that one out.
  2. Our "race" to the top is off to an interesting start. - Rox came back from a 10-1 hole to top the Braves 12-10 and sweep the series The comeback included 3 in the 5th, 3 more in the 6th, and then 4 in the 8th after two were down - Reds were up 10-1 in San Fran but then had to score once in the top of the 9th just to tie it up and hope for extras. 2 in the 5th, 2 in the 6th, and SIX in the 8th for the Gints who are batting in bottom 9 - and in that other league, Boston keeps the pressure on the AL East's top two by winning the first of two vs Seattle
  3. It was a walk. If Castillo walked, he'd be hailed for being an on-base machine, so I think this counts. This is now getting absurd. Working out a walk takes at least some degree of skill in most cases. Standing there while 4 wide ones are called for from the opposing dugout based on a strategy move (and a bad one at that IMO but that's a separate story) doesn't qualify for anything resembling an ability to get oneself on base. In fact, take out Tejada's HBPs and IWs and his OBA comes in at a ringing .204 this season (as opposed to his otherwise robust .268) and I don't even want to know what it's been more recently. This is an odd argument we're having. Yes it is. My only point here is that I can make a better argument for Francoeur starting than I can for Tejada - at least as long as the intention is, y'know, like trying to win games and stuff.
  4. And if anyone has the "skill" to negotiate a bases-loaded IW it's Ruben.
  5. It's my experience that when fans start running out of actual things to complain about they start resorting to facial expressions. The 'Franco smirk' and the 'Heilman pout' were the two most recent examples of fans installing 'I don't care' and 'I'm not trying' motives to players they had already decided to dislike.
  6. At least the 'Friends of Frenchy Society' (they meet in a phone booth outside of SNY studios each day) can argue that 2 of his 5 outs drove in runs last night, whereas the 'Tejada Zapatas' have to console themselves with the realization that in his HS yearbook he was consistently voted the boy most likely to ground-out.
  7. I'm more stunned at Tejada not Castillo than anything involving Frenchy. I mean, not even the seemingly customary free start as reward for the game-winning hit deal. Or even not the radical idea of sitting down the guy who's making outs 95% of the time.
  8. Dickey - 1.5 Parnell - 0.4 Takahashi - 0.4 Pagan - 2.7 Wright - 1.4 Beltran - 1.4 Francoeur - 0.7 Castillo - 0.7 Davis - 0.4 Thole - 0.4
  9. Hanley definitely has a thing for the Mets (love/hate or just hate, I'm not sure) but he's also been a punk going back to his minor league days so it's not all NYC-driven. Plus, alternately between hustle and not isn't exactly a new thing for him either. He was just safe at that play at 2nd - although for a moment there I was thinking it was the 3rd time in the game he deserved to be thrown out on the bases.
  10. btw, ESPN caught something (in between monitoring OchoCinco's tweets of course) that I don't think anyone on last night's broadcast did. When Hanley ran across the mound following an out (Gary & Ron talked about it briefly) he also kicked at the NYM logo that's scratched into the dirt so as to partially erase it. It was during his next AB that Dickey came up and in on him (well, sort of - headhunting with a knuckleball is like bringing a spoon to a knife fight). It didn't occur to me at the time that it was anything more than coincidental but now I'm not so sure.
  11. LUIS LUIS LUIS LU-EEEEEEE LUIS LUIS LUIS LU-IIIIIIIII LUIS LUIS LUIS LU-EEEEEE LUIS LUIS I'M GONNA CRY
  12. Oh Man ... this pitcher's having trouble finding the plate
  13. OK, that's a start. I don't run for Ike ... at lest not yet.
  14. Well, I sure hope we win it here (with the weak part of the lineup due up) because, if not, we're down our two supposed best relievers before extras even start.
  15. If they go ahead here I want to see Parnell still in there. Marlins have a RH-heavy lineup and there's no point - other than having a designated closer - to switch up. oe: Oh well, I wanna see him still in there anyway.
  16. Hanley should have been out twice -- first time on Tejada's hesitation and then again on the phantom pick-off. If EITHER of those happens then the 3R HR doesn't.

Here are some of the players who underperformed. Expectations were not met and sometimes [team] looked silly. What a mess. Some of this stuff is legit, but a lot of it is "ooh, and another thing!" reaching. The problem, IMO, is that while this series might be written for ESPN New York it's still being written for ESPN meaning that the causes and, most likely, the solutions are going to be aimed towards a more national audience. It doesn't make the stuff in it wrong necessarily, just a lot more generic than if it were aimed at a local audience who doesn't need the history leading up to this point spelled out for them.
  18. And it wouldn't surprise me if most or all of those 9 'can trade' teams are the poor sisters of MLB Fans tend to read into those NT cities as if the player has a particular gripe against playing there - "oooh look, here's another guy who's afraid to come to Noo Yawk" - and they're usually wrong.
  19. Higher-priced players with partial NT deals mostly try to block trades to other high-payroll clubs figuring that their salary will take care of low-payroll clubs from even thinking about dealing for them, in effect, giving them something close to full NT protection. IOW, the existence of Boston on Johnny D's list doesn't necessarily mean that he's got bad blood there, only that if his current team does try to deal him there he'll have some kind of say in the matter. Sometimes that say is a 'Yes' or 'No', and sometimes it's an 'only if you pick up my option suckers'. Wouldn't surprise me if the Yanx are on that list too, but not Pitt, or KC, or Miami.
