  1. Between differing opening days, differing off-days, rain-outs, skipped back-of-the-rotation starters, injuries, etc., those #1 vs #1, #2 vs #2, and on down the line matchups are pretty much blown up by the 2nd week of the season.
  2. I expect a Real Ass-kicking season, or at least a Reasonably Astute one.
  3. Nothing like taking a game out of the sunshine on the 1st of May in the northeast and, instead, making it run until nearly midnight.
  4. ... But yeah, that walk rate is a challenge. The slugging rate isn't a picnic either.
  5. I hated being at that game. Met fans rooting against the Mets was a new and disturbing experience for me - especially after Seaver's double off Koosman which set up a Cincinnati run.
  6. Slight improvement from 2010 -- .270/.360/.470 Counting stats probably go up a bit - say 24 HRs and 87 RBIs
  7. Probably a better option than Jeb.
  8. You wonder what makes him reject using his given name of Daniel.

What it does suggest is that they're not going to cut him until they see him and/or until they see some alternate candidate emerge (and, really, what else are they going to say at this point?). Nothing in there about him staying on the team the whole year either way ... even in speculation ... even from Harper.
  10. I expect him to spin some great tunes.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Thanks, FK, for coming up with the win/win solution. If he proves he can't play anymore during spring training, a Castillo "retirement" followed by a Bonilla-type buyout that doesn't kill this year's budget, yet removes Luis from the current roster. Pure genius y'are. Later - Castillo isn't going to "prove" anything in spring as everyone knows what he can and can't do. At this point it's merely a question about whether the options of getting rid of him with no return or with little return are preferable to keeping him around. - The fact that they owe him $6mil as opposed to the $12mil of this time last year makes eating most or all of the contract just that much easier. Plus, the biggest reason he's been here up to now is the utter lack of replacements available even as each AndyHandy or Tejada quickly got crowned as the next new thing despite, for the most part, hitting worse than Luis did. Wanting those guys to be better isn't the same as them actually being better. This year's crop at least has more options to choose from. - However things turn out it's not going to be a budget-buster. Whoever replaces him if he's gone or joins him if he's not is going to be at or near the ML minimum. - Met fans have to get off this obsession with the Bonilla thing. All that arrangement did a decade or more ago was allow the team to take a smaller amount of money than they were going to have to pay him up front and invest that in a fund that would pay him off starting at a much later date and over a much longer time. It's not like what he's being paid off that fund has suddenly been added to this year's budget.
  12. Every time see there's something new in this thread I have to think for a minute because I realize I forgot what the thread is all about. Then, after I read the new posts, I realize I still don't know what the thread is about.

The Mets have NEVER show that they will be willing to cut him, or Ollie, and eat their salaries, and thereby also confirming that the contracts were horrific. He will play out the duration of his contract while we all grouse about how much of a zero he is out there. Good times. .240 BA, 0 HR, 30 RBI, 40 runs, 15 SBs, bunting at every fucking opportunity. The Mets cut - or traded for something akin to useless while eating most of the money - Bonilla, Ordonez, Matusi, and Roger Cedeno while owing them about as much or in some cases more than what they owe Luis. If any one of about five different potential 2B-men prove even marginally ready during ST I don't think either a clean slice or a one-sided trade is out of the question, in fact I think it's pretty likely.
  14. I expect that Luis Castillo will be getting his mail in a different town in 2011.
  15. The dialogue in 'Sports Night' was frequently too cute by half but seeing as how both that one and 'Studio 60' were so short lived and that I never watched 'West Wing' I guess I'm still safe from OD'ing on Sorkin-itis. A few notes on the cast: - Zuckerberg's girlfriend in the opening scenes was played by Rooney Mara, the granddaughter of both the Giants & Steeler owning clans - the part of the crew-rowing twins was played by one actor, Armand 'Armie' Hammer, great grandson of the industrialist Armand.
  16. Capuano had the academic numbers to get into Yale, and even signed a letter of intent to go there. But then he saw the Duke campus during a camp and changed his mind. Duke was just the perfect combination of academics and sports for me, he said. School was always very important to me, but it was also very important for me to get in the best position baseballwise, to pursue that dream. - Translation: Duke had better weather.
  17. I didn't care about the outcome of the legal proceedings either - but on the other hand I don't think we were supposed to. To me that was merely a device which allowed the characters other than Zuckerberg to "narrate" part of the story. I agree that the snappy dialogue was especially good. I figure that was Sorkin's doing.
  18. Not a done deal yet - but as things stand now it's looking like a [u:2t67mdl7]eight player deal[/u:2t67mdl7] where minor leaguers RHP Chris Archer, OF Brandon Guyer, SS Hak-Ju Lee, C Robinson Chirinos and part-time MLer OF Sam Fuld go to Tampa in exchange for Garza and two minor leaguers, one of whom looks to be OF Fernando Perez. Archer appears to be the most promising of the bunch. HJ Lee is a defensive specialist with a questionable bat.
  19. You say you don't come to the conclusion about finite ballot size, but then immediately follow that by saying, "I think that restricting a ballot to 10 players has resulted in some players falling off", so I've kind of lost track where you're headed with this. If voters are voluntarily restricting their ballots to one or two players then that's their choice and, we are left to surmise, their way of saying that's as many as are deserving.
  20. Valadius wrote: I would like to see a trend towards three-member-plus classes as opposed to one- or two-member classes, yes, especially with the three monster classes looming. For example, I would like to see Larkin, Raines, Bagwell, and Edgar Martinez inducted next year. I would vote for more, but those four deserve it more than the rest right now, IMO. Even leaving alone for a moment the idea that a certain class size is better or worse than a certain other class size, what makes you come to the conclusion that the reason those YOU think should be in but aren't (not yet anyway) was the result of an unreasonably finite number of spaces on the ballot?
  21. Valadius wrote: The reason Harold Baines dropped off the ballot is entirely due to the backlog of candidates on the ballot and the ten-candidate requirement. When more than 95% of the electorate says 'No' the most likely reason one dropped off the ballot is entirely due to the fact that most people thought he wasn't good enough. There's nothing unique about the current "backlog of candidates" that would cause a deserving player's numbers to be so low.

MFS62 wrote: Frayed Knot wrote: I don't believe the DL exists - 60 day or otherwise - at this time of year Could you imagine all the phantom injuries that would pop up during roster-stashing time if it did? The Rule 5 draft pool would be reduced to just the clubhouse boys. Yes, that's why I posted the question. To (help) prevent those kinds of false DL claims, all players on the 60 day dsabled list must be added back to the 40 man roster prior to the Rule V draft. But after the draft, I was wondering if there is a specific date after which players can be placed back on the 60 day DL. Later Yeah, opening day.
  23. Edgar Renteria = Cincinnati Red One year deal.
