  1. I've been deeply enjoying Class A Baseball in the Middle of Everywhere, reflections from a young minor league mascot, who seems to share my belief that the health of minor league baseball is sort of symbiotic with the health of the American small town, the city, the Republic, and it's culture and economy. I highly commend and recommend. This is in my summer reading queue. I just heard of that book a few days ago, probably pick it up myself. Just finished this one: Maybe not the greatest writing in the history of the English language, but a pretty good story. The Southern League had disbanded after 1961 rather than agree to the order to integrate. But it revived itself in 1964 spearheaded by Birmingham, Alabama of all places despite the presence of Gov Wallace and Bull Conner. Future Met Tommy Reynolds plays a prominent role. Author Colton played for Macon in the SL just two years later and eventually worked his baseball career into ONE major league game (2 innings pitched for the '68 Phillies).
  2. I dunno, I can see where ARod simply got all giddy at good news from his doctor and decided it was something worth tweeting about. The Yanx, in turn, are saying; "not so fast there cabana boy, WE decide when you're ready to proceed, not some doctor. And further more WE'LL do the announcin' 'round here ... and donnnnnn you forget it" Cashman has already apologized for the language even if not for the message itself. The team, remember, isn't too crazy about getting him back on the field, particularly if they think there's some money-saving suspension coming down the pike. Plus they don't seem too happy with all these new-fangled twitter devices that detract from the team's ability to control all output. Mgmt has already banned players from accepting paid radio spots and the like (not commercials but say weekly appearances that players get paid for) and Yanqui players have long been extremely UNavailable for even the occasional non-paying show. This incident, even if a bit less subtle than their usual, just seems like more of the same.
  3. Puig update: .435/.467/.729 // 1196 - in 90 PAs/85 ABs. 7 HRs

  5. Even the parts of Colorado that aren't on fire have been hot this week. Remember that it's a 6PM EDT start time.
  6. Erstwhile closer Carlos Marmol was DFA'd by the Cubs on Tuesday not long after blowing that 3-run lead against the Mets. Signed by the Cubs in 1999 and with the big club since 2006, he had racked up 117 saves over the years (3rd in club history) including 20 last season but they apparently got tired of his increasing unreliability. And now MLBN is saying that he's been picked up by the Braves. oe: Marmol to Braves info apparently NOT accurate.
  7. A whole lotta leather over on that left side of the diamond tonight. Each is probably worth a sip or two even if neither player did a lot with the bat in the game.
  8. Yanx game ends two outs ahead of ours - yet started a full hour earlier. 8-5 Texas was your final. Meanwhile, it. looks like Teixeira is going to have season-ending surgery on his wrist.

  10. Odd fact of the day: The ChiSox and their in-division rival Tigers have yet to meet this season and won't until just before the ASB when the season will already be more than half over. On the flip side, from that point on nearly 1/4 of their remainder of the season (18 of the final 75 or so games) will be against the other - a fact which would be a lot cooler if both were division contenders although it isn't looking that way.
  11. Tough night for Cap'n Fantastic.
  12. I heard some guy on FAN the other day claiming he couldn't find some of the apples, that they weren't where they were supposed to be or something. Naturally he blamed the Wilpons.
  13. And a Q-ball in the Satin pocket to end it.
  14. Holy incompetence Batman (and Robin), it's nice to be on the right side of one of those innings for a change.

Between multiple threads on the same subject, threads in wrong sub-fora, multiple posts in wrong threads, missed KTEs, and poor PotG participation - we're definitely in a collective posting slump around here. Ceetar has volunteered to go to Vegas with hopes of straightening things out, but I'm not sure that's the best remedy.

  24. Four decades into the "experiment" and now sixteen years into inter-league play, I still find myself unprepared when I see a 'DH' in the lineup.
