  1. Germen - 0.4 Rice - 0.4 Aardsma - 0.4 Byrd - 2.0 Wright - 1.3 Buck - 0.7 Young - 0.3 Lagares - 1.0
  2. Torres - 2.5 Germen - 0.2 Parnell - 0.4 Nieuwenhuis - 1.5 Byrd - 1.0 Young - 1.2 Murphy - 0.4 Buck - 0.3
  3. Wright: 2 NYM HRs behind Piazza for 2nd place in club history.
  4. Gardner took a called strike three at the bottom of the zone (the K-zone thing showed it as a strike) and immediately two-hand spiked the helmet right at the ump's feet. He was tossed before the thing came down from the first bounce. What outfield? Quick, offer them Marlon Byrd for any three prospects of our choosing.
  5. Nice AB by Lagares If you can't beat em, make em sweat.
  6. Tough night all around for Q - even with the cheapie RBI
  7. Still contemplating my answer, but right now I'm leaning towards 0-71
  8. Meanwhile, Burke has been harder then when Hefner was in there and hasn't recorded an out except for the bunt ... and now the K.
  9. I waited five days for THIS?!? Ron & Keith railing against the bunt for courtesy reasons - but if I'm the Mets I prefer that play ... especially after THAT (3R HR as I type) Looks like keeping the extra reliever is going to be necessary to get through this weekend.
  10. It's actually much easier these days to name a team's bench. The tougher assignment is keeping the entire bullpen straight.
  11. Central Islip is a long way from Odessa-Permian
  12. btw, this weekend is somehow the first trip to Fenway for the Yanx this season. They've played two series in da Bronx including the opening series of the year. Sox hold a 4-2 edge so far. Pettitte vs Doubront tonight. But what this means is that 13 of their final 67 games (just 65 left for the Sawx) -- or just about 1 game in 5 -- are against each other, with 9 of those 13 in 'The Hub'. Needless to say, those games will have a significant impact on this season's fortunes for both clubs. Sox start tonight with a 6.0 game lead over the 4th place Yanx who follow this up with a trip to Texas before hosting Tampa and then go right back out on the road.
  13. It's true though, as soon as Jeter went on the list every other person there was suddenly moved ahead of schedule in their rehabs.
  14. Nice of Kendrick and wife to put the family crest on their asses. Who knows, this could start a whole new trend in heraldry. Best thing about this series is no Dillon Gee. Remove the Phils as his opponent (and Ryan Howard specifically) and I think he'd have two Cy Youngs already. In fact, the Mets shouldn't even let him in the park this weekend lest the Phils start gaining confidence just by looking at him.
  15. Half-seasons count. In fact they count just about half as much as full seasons.
  16. John Sickels updates his pre-season Top-150 prospects list with a mid-season Top-75 Wheeler (15th pre-season) is eliminated from the list on the basis of being on his way to losing his eligibility status. Syndergaard, Montero and Flores move up while d'Arnaud loses ground on account of not playing enough this year. Syndergaard (22nd pre-season to 11th) -- JS: His breaking ball looks good enough to me. The stats are there, the stuff is there, the body is there. Montero (previously unranked to 50th) -- has boosted his stock by maintaining command in Double-A and not getting killed after moving up to Triple-A Las Vegas. Flores (118th to 71st) -- Las Vegas inflates his numbers to some extent, but I think he continues to make steady progress. d'Arnaud (13th to 22nd) -- Staying healthy is a tool (or a skill); either way it is a factor, especially for a player in a demanding defensive position.
  17. Hefner - 3.8 Aardsma - 0.6 Rice - 0.2 Edgin - 0.6 Wright - 1.2 Young - 1.2 Murphy - 0.8 Nieuwenhuis - 1.4
  18. ARod--working on a streak of two HRs in two games at AA & AAA--claims he'll be back with the big club on Monday and, seeing as how we've so far heard no "Shut the Fuck Up" from Cashman, I guess it's true.
  19. Vic Sage wrote: the draft is ... illegal (if not for their politically garnered anti-trust waiver), and simply serves to depress wages to employees. Except that it's not just the anti-trust waiver that keeps it going. The NFL has no such blanket protection yet their ability not just to have a draft but to restrict by age who can enter into it has survived legal challenges.
  20. These extra picks are based on a combination of market size and revenue (bottom ten from each - although there aren't necessarily 20 teams since there's likely to be some overlap). There's then a 'lottery' drawing to determine six picks stuck in after the 1st round and then six more after the second so the term 'lottery pick' doesn't have quite the meaning as in the NBA. The Cards in this case get the 3rd of six picks following round 2 next year which will probably be somewhere in the 70s where they'll be unlikely to snag the next LeBron. You wouldn't think the Cards would be in the bottom 1/3 in revenue but StL could well be in market size. The whole thing seems like a weird idea to me and that's before you get around to questioning the accuracy of the revenue figures. You know this system had to come out of some compromise in negotiations because it totally sounds like something put together by a committee. The other novelty is that these picks [u:1y18fn9b]Can[/u:1y18fn9b] be traded in advance of next year's draft.
  21. Centerfield wrote: And there, you have two examples of why it (meaning which team on the plaque) matters. It may be arbitrary, but such is the nature of fandom. It matters only if one views the hat on the plaque as the final definition of being, or not being, a Met. I simply don't see it as an either/or thing. We can (and have ... and currently are ... and probably will again in the future) argue over which numbers should be retired. I just don't like the idea of tying it all to the plaque.
  22. I'm sorry, we were looking for married with multiple MVPs, not one MVP with multiple marriages. But you will leave our show with this nice toaster over plus a copy of our home game.
  23. When expansion and inter-league play made scheduling tougher, the dreaded fourth off-day (Thursday) started to creep in for a small portion of the teams. Within a few years of that starting, the portion of teams with off-days seemed to get a bit larger. I've always suggested that, since you need a four-game series to fill this Thurs-Sun period it would be the perfect time to schedule the IL 'rivalry' four-game series. Would be a nice kick-off to the 2nd half and each team could line up their pitching specifically for it. Instead, I suspect now that it's part of the basic agreement that the ASB is a four-day break. The players probably preferred it and were willing to give up one off day elsewhere in exchange. Besides, without it many of them would scarcely have the time for that all-important trip to and from the ESPYs!!
  24. We all know that the Mays/24 thing was the result of some kind of promise made to Willie from Joan Payson. Now with Payson long gone and her relatives no longer connected with the club, and with Willie not really having connections either nor much of a family to object (he just out-lived his 2nd wife) I wonder if they're waiting for him to die in order to feel that the promise was fulfilled and #24 is fair game again. By contrast, Carter, dying young as he did, probably makes them less likely to re-issue #8 as it would look like jumping on the grave if you were to do it at this point. I'd prefer they inform the family that, following a specified period (X years after his passing) they're going to put it back in circulation. Either way, this 'limbo' that those two numbers are in is the worst case scenario IMO. Either retire them officially or start using them again (and don't retire them officially).
  25. TV seems to have a near obsession with giving women male-sounding names or nicknames.
