  13. ] THE ASSOCIATED PRESS May 26, 2006, 6:27 PM EDT The Mets made their third trade for pitching in three days, sending right-hander Jeremi Gonzalez to the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday for reliever Mike Adams. Gonzalez was designated for assignment after pitching six innings in a 5-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday. He had a 7.71 ERA in three starts with the Mets, and is expected to join the Brewers on Sunday. Adams had an 11.57 ERA in two games with the Brewers. He had been pitching for Triple-A Nashville. The right-hander is 2-4 with a 3.54 ERA and one save in 61 career games. Gonzalez is 26-33 with a 4.92 ERA in 109 games. The Mets made their first move to bolster an injury-depleted staff on Wednesday, acquiring veteran right-hander Orlando Hernandez from Arizona for reliever Jorge Julio. New York got left-hander Dave Williams from the Cincinnati Reds for minor leaguer Robert Manuel on Thursday.
  14. Backpage headline after his first home run... THE BALBINO.
  15. ] The Mets must somehow find a way to reduce the pressure on Duaner Sanchez, Aaron Heilman and Billy Wagner, who have started this season like marathoners going out a little too fast. They can't keep up this workload pace without facing the possibility of August and September burnout. Olny is right about that though and with Feliciano getting more inings and Willims probably coming soon I think the Mets are doing just that.
  16. Olny on the trade from ESPN insider. ] The best possible situation you can have with Orlando Hernandez at this stage in his career, a high-ranking American League executive said last night, is when you don't have to count on him. "The White Sox played it exactly right last year," the exec said, "because they brought him along and he was kind of the extra guy in the rotation -- they didn't absolutely need him to win. They went into the postseason, and he wasn't filling a crucial role; he was just another guy on their pitching staff. And then, in the playoff series against Boston, they brought him [in] when it wasn't make or break, and he was tremendous." The Arizona Diamondbacks wanted to use him in a non-pressure support role -- the fifth starter, a spot which is sometimes skipped, especially when your ace is Cy Young candidate Brandon Webb -- and El Duque was unhappy. So it came to pass that the Diamondbacks, a team in need of starting pitching, dealt a starting pitcher to the New York Mets for reliever Jorge Julio. I like this trade for the Diamondbacks a lot, because they get a guy who throws 96 mph and can slot him into middle relief, a place where he could thrive; there aren't many guys throwing the sixth or seventh inning firing at 96 mph. Julio was getting better for the Mets, as his April/May splits show. Now you can look for Arizona to promote Dustin Nippert or Enrique Gonzalez -- whose minor league numbers are good -- into their big league rotation in place of El Duque. And I like this trade for the Mets if they find a way to not have to rely on El Duque. He is actually 40 years old going on 41 in October (not 36, as the press guides would have you believe), and so far this year, he has thrown 45.2 innings in nine starts. Five innings per start. If that average holds, then Hernandez will leave 12 outs on the table for the Mets' bullpen, which has borne an incredible workload this year, between all the extra-inning games and the struggles of the No. 4 and No. 5 starters. Going into Wednesday's afternoon action, four Mets relievers ranked among the top 15 in all of baseball for total pitches thrown -- and now one of them, Julio, has been traded. The Mets need to think of Hernandez as their No. 5 starter and be prepared for the strong possibility he will get hurt. They need to develop other options at No. 4 and No. 5. If Alay Soler throws the way he did last night, they'll be fine -- after walking the bases loaded in the first inning, with 15 of his first 22 pitches thrown for balls, he threw 54 of his last 80 pitches for strikes and looked good. Brian Bannister will come back at some point, and Mets general manager Omar Minaya will continue to monitor the trade market. The Mets must somehow find a way to reduce the pressure on Duaner Sanchez, Aaron Heilman and Billy Wagner, who have started this season like marathoners going out a little too fast. They can't keep up this workload pace without facing the possibility of August and September burnout. There will be issues with El Duque: He gets hurt a lot, he is temperamental and he is high-maintenance. But if the Mets make the playoffs and face a big moment in October, there is nobody stronger mentally than Hernandez. But we are going to rely on El Duque...at least for a while.

  21. Yeah I think it was today, can't have been easy on anyone that move.
  22. I found this interesting, Robinson took it harder than LeCroy. ] Robinson brought to tears despite win WASHINGTON (AP) - Tears of sadness streamed down both of Frank Robinson's cheeks, and his voice quivered, even in the aftermath of an 8-5 victory. The Washington Nationals manager had been cornered into a move rarely seen in baseball, the benching of a catcher in the middle of an inning. The Houston Astros had stolen seven bases - the most by any team in the majors in nearly four years - against third-string catcher Matthew LeCroy. After three batters in the seventh inning, with the tying run on base and shortly after LeCroy had committed his second error by throwing a ball into center field, Robinson pulled him for emergency catcher Robert Fick. "If my daddy was managing this team, I'm sure he would have done the same thing," LeCroy said. Robinson took it a lot harder. "I feel for him," Robinson said. "And I hope the fans understand. And I just appreciate him hanging in there as long as he did." The Nationals captured their third straight victory and fifth win in six games. They are playing their best baseball of the season, but Robinson couldn't overcome the emotions he felt after putting a veteran through an embarrassing scene. LeCroy, who handles pitchers well but has a suspect arm, was starting because Brian Schneider and Wiki Gonzalez were hurt. "It's not LeCroy's fault. We know his shortcoming," Robinson said. "They took advantage of them today. ... I wasn't trying to embarrass him in any way. It's just a move that at that time I felt like I had to do for the good of the ballclub. That would have been a very devastating loss for those guys, and I'm just happy they held together out there." LeCroy, Gonzalez and Fick are the Nationals' backup-by-committee for Schneider, who is scheduled to come off the disabled list Friday after missing 14 games with a hamstring injury. Gonzalez was unavailable after getting a concussion Wednesday night when he was hit in the head by a backswing. "It was a tough day," LeCroy said. "They were running all over the place. A couple of no-throws, and a couple of balls I shouldn't have thrown ended up going into the outfield, which you can't let that happen, especially when you're up four or five runs. Ain't nothing you can do, just try to keep coming back day-in and day-out." LeCroy said he didn't blame Robinson for the mid-inning benching. "I'm man enough to take it. I don't think he should get that emotional about it," LeCroy said. "Hey, he's doing his job, just like I would do if I was in his position." Once the tears are dry, Robinson will be able to find plenty of pleasing thoughts about his team. Jose Vidro hit a three-run homer and had four RBIs. Tony Armas (5-2) won his fifth straight decision. Nick Johnson broke an 0-for-16 slump with an RBI single. Leadoff hitter Alfonso Soriano scored three runs. Rookie Ryan Zimmerman had three RBIs and had another stellar game defensively. The Nationals have won back-to-back series and have their longest home winning streak of the season. "This has been the best," Vidro said. "We've put everything together out there on the field, it's not just on paper. We're playing better." And the Astros? They are happy to get out of town. Andy Pettitte (3-6), struggling for the second straight start, allowed three runs in the first inning, three in the second and one in the third before departing in his shortest outing since 2003. Houston outhit Washington 12-11 and got seven walks to go with the seven stolen bases - but left 12 men on base. The Astros are 1-3 to start their 10-game road trip and have lost nine of their last 11 away from Minute Maid Park. "I just obviously put us in too big of a hole to mount a comeback," Pettitte said. "I feel great, I feel strong. It seems like it's extremely difficult right now to get anybody out." The last time Houston had seven stolen bases was April 13, 1999, at San Francisco. Eight is the team record. The Florida Marlins were the last team in the majors to steal seven, on May 27, 2002, against the New York Mets. Each team lost its right fielder early. Washington's Jose Guillen, who recently missed five games with a hamstring injury, had it tighten up again and left after two innings. Houston's Lance Berkman was gone after 2 1/2 innings with a hyperextended knee, but manager Phil Garner said the injury wasn't serious. Armas allowed four runs and a season-high nine hits in 5 1-3 innings. He was replaced by Saul Rivera, got out of a second-and-third, one-out jam in his major league debut. Jon Rauch, still bothered by a recent bout of food poisoning, then pitched the dicey seventh that included LeCroy's benching. Rauch allowed a run and had the bases loaded with none out, then retired the next three hitters. Chad Cordero pitched the ninth for his seventh save. "That game went from a beautiful game to an ugly game to a nice victory," Vidro said. "It was quite a game."
