Teams starting to ban beer in the home clubhouse, course they won't ban it in the stadium. ] Beer Banned In Orioles Clubhouse Kathryn Brown (WJZ) BALTIMORE A ban of a different kind has the Baltimore Orioles aiming to keep their players from getting hurt or even killed. The players at Camden Yards will no longer be able to enjoy a post-game beer or any other alcoholic beverage. Kathryn Brown reports the decision to ban beer inside the players' clubhouse came just five days after a Cardinals pitcher died from drinking and driving. Baseball and beer. The combination is as old as the sport itself, but team executives with the Orioles say it's also lethal. In a move that's drawing a mixed reaction from players, they are no long providing alcohol in the clubhouse. For some, cracking a cold one after the game is a treasured ritual, part of the culture of baseball. "My thing is, you gotta use common sense. They ban it in here in the clubhouse, but they sell it out there to the fans. You gotta know when to say when," said pitcher Jamie Walker. "Most of us are adults over 21 and it's, I think, our responsibility to monitor how much alcohol we consume at any point in time," said outfielder Corey Patterson. The ban comes in the wake of a fatal car crash involving Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock. Reports show he was drinking and driving. O's players learned about the decision after Friday's game. "In light of what happened with the Cardinals and their player getting killed, we thought it was the right time to do it," said Jim Duquette, vice president of baseball operations. Duquette made the same decision to ban alcohol from the clubhouse several years ago when he was general manager of the New York Mets. "The players, as you would expect, some it doesn't really affect them all that much and some were surprised by it because it's been a part of the culture in baseball for so long," Duquette said. "I don't want to say it's right, but it's not wrong either. But I think everybody around a major league team is a grown man," said catcher Ramon Hernandez. "In a way, it's a good decision because it prevents things from happening," said outfielder Nick Markakis. Six clubs in baseball now have alcohol bans in their clubhouse. Alcohol is still made available in the visiting clubhouse. (© MMVII, CBS Broadcasting I another article says the six teams are.... That is so fucked up,if anything Jackson should meet with MLB and help publicize the RBI program, get more African American kids playing the game,I don't for a second believe the Braves intentionally have no African Americans on the team. RBI link http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/community/rbi.jsp For those that can't read the AJC link. ] Braves meet with Rainbow/PUSH officials By CARROLL ROGERS The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 05/07/07 Upset over the lack of African-Americans on the Braves roster, members of Jesse Jackson's Rainbow-PUSH Coalition asked for a meeting with team officials. They got one Monday. Joe Beasley, Southern Regional Director for the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, said he and Dexter Clinkscale, the director of sports for the organization, met Monday morning for nearly two hours with Braves general manager John Schuerholz, assistant general manager Frank Wren and three other Braves officials. "The team slipped ... down to [no African-Americans]; it wasn?t something that just happened," Beasley said Monday afternoon. "I think it was a lack of diligence on the part of the Braves to recruit African-American players. There's not diminished enthusiasm for African-Americans playing baseball. It's simply the opportunity hasn't presented itself." Schuerholz acknowledged the meeting Monday but declined further comment, saying in a statement: "We had a meeting with Mr. Beasley and another member of his organization this morning and discussed a variety of topics." Less than 10 percent of major league players are African-Americans. In a recent interview on the subject, Schuerholz said: "You go to where the talent leads you. Finding major league-caliber baseball players is far too difficult if you try to narrow your criteria down to demographics." Countered Beasley, "As I expected, [schuerholz?s] idea is the bottom line: I'll put the best 40 men I can get wherever I can get them from on the field, and that's fair. But the fact of the matter is if they put resources into recruiting here in the United States, and more specifically here in Atlanta, there are talented players here." The issue was brought to the attention of the Rainbow-PUSH Coalition during the 60th anniversary celebration of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier. The Braves and Houston Astros did not have any African-American players on their 25-man rosters at the time. The Braves' total grew with the promotion of left fielder Willie Harris, who is from Robinson?s hometown of Cairo. "You slipped down to nothing, now you've got one, we expect it to start going up higher," Beasley said was the sentiment he voiced in the meeting. "We want to see incrementally it move back up, rather than moving down. There was an openness on [schuerholz's] part to talk and to be in dialogue and hopefully be in partnership in trying to make sure that it happens. He was very nice, a gentleman. I'm going to hold him to his word to work with us and move those numbers back up to a respectable level." Sponsored Links

IGT - 5/8 ... Mets Able to beat Cain?

I didn't know about this. ] SAN FRANCISCO -- Just because Carlos Beltran was back in the lineup Monday did not necessarily mean all had returned to normal for the Mets' centerfielder. The day after going 0-for-5 with three strikeouts, Beltran made his left quad muscle sound more like a lingering problem. "It's stayed the same," said Beltran, who had an MRI last week in New York and was scratched Sunday because of the sore leg. "But late in the game, it gets tight, and afterward, it gets tight. I take anti-inflammatories to make the swelling go away. But the thing is, the only way for it to go away is to stop playing. If it doesn't continue to improve, I'll take time off and let it heal." Beltran was bothered by his quad muscle in 2005, his first season with the Mets, but this time his performance doesn't seem too affected. He is on track for another MVP-caliber season, and was batting .320 with seven home runs and 26 RBIs before last night's game. -
] "Hey Tommy," Lo Duca yelled over to Glavine. "[Mike] Pelfrey looks like Sinead O'Connor."

I think Al Cohn is being unfair to Green, yes his errors have looked glaring on the tele,I would have signed up for this from Green before the season started, would he be any better with the glove at first?. Delgado missed one week of spring training IIRC,could be wrong on that.

I love watching Bonds at bat,he rarely swings at a ball he can't hit,and I love how the Mets just pitch to him, great eye at the plate. After the game Glavine got the buzz cut,Sele has a family portrait today on the beach with his family so he was excused(prolly do it after),Reyes says he'll do it on the off day in NY. Rick Down and Ray Ramirez got it too. -
Hoy Shit...... ] A pitcher in the Mets' minor league system was suspended Tuesday for 100 games by the commissioner's office after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. Jorge Reyes is the 12th player to be suspended for violating the minor league drug policy and the first to draw a 100-game suspension for a second violation. A 22-year-old native of the Dominican Republic, Reyes made one start this season for Class-A Savannah of the South Atlantic League, allowing no runs on four hits in five innings

Clemens Returns Again (Split from NYC's Weaker Sisters)

Fair play to Tim McCarver, and Michael Kay should really grow up...... ] Clemens' story has hollow ring 28 million reasons not to believe him By BOB RAISSMAN DAILY NEWS SPORTS COLUMNIST It was the sound bite, the Roger Clemens quote designed to explain why he so graciously accepted all that loot - the prorated salary of $28 million - from George Steinbrenner. "I've come back to do what they only know how to do here with the Yankees," Clemens said Sunday shortly after his Bronx coronation. "And that's win a championship." These words inspire some Yankees fans, and other assorted Clemens groupies such as Ma and Pa Pinstripe, aka Suzyn Waldman and John Sterling, but they ring hollow to others who refer to The Rocket as The Phony. That's basically the characterization Fox's Tim McCarver presented Saturday, the day before Clemens stepped out on The Boss' balcony and announced his decision to embrace the title of America's Highest Paid Part-time Worker. In the bottom of the fourth (Mariners-Yankees), McCarver said winning a title was not Clemens' primary motivation for returning. "I have been skeptical when Roger Clemens says he wants another World Series ring," McCarver told play-by-play man Joe Buck. "If he really wanted a World Series ring he would've chosen the best club, before spring training started, and been with that club at the beginning of the season so he could do something about it." McCarver continued, saying Clemens' line about wanting another title made absolutely no sense. "I mean what a gig, to show up in early June and, in Houston's case over the last few years for the most part, pitch in only home games where he could drive to work and not go on the road," McCarver said. "I mean I understand what his agents are saying. They're saying that money is no matter. Well, if that's the case, sign for nothing." There is reason for skepticism. Not only of Clemens' motives, but the lengths the Yankees have gone to sign him and spin the move. Considering T-Mac's take on Clemens, it's safe to say that unlike Michael Kay, the voice of Al Yankzeera, McCarver did not get "goose bumps" when Clemens made his Sunday stadium appearance. Yesterday, Kay, on his ESPN-1050 show, was extremely agitated over those criticizing him for waving pom-poms and saying the sight of Clemens in the Stadium gave him "goose bumps." Kay was also beside himself over anyone daring to think Clemens' Stadium coronation was both cheesy and ostentatious. "I did have goose bumps," Kay whined. "He (Clemens) is a decent dude. He treats me with respect." Clemens should. Kay has a well-documented history - only matched by Ma and Pa Pinstripe - of kissing Clemens' posterior on a regular basis. Nonetheless, even a Clemens bobo like Kay, who also is a paid employee of the Yankees, had serious issues with his buddy being able to come and go as he pleases, which GM Brian Cashman calls "The Family Plan." "Couldn't the Yankees have said, 'Roger, we're paying you 28 million dollars, can you please show up every day?'" Kay said. Stephen A. Smith, Kay's ESPN-1050 colleague, said Yankees brass "bent over" for Clemens by creating a separate set of rules. "It," Smith said, "is disgusting." On WFAN, Mike Francesa torched the Yankees for caving in to Clemens and reversing a team policy Joe Torre said would never change under his watch. "The Yankees sold their souls here. They said they would never do this," Francesa said. "You either have a team or you don't. The guy (Clemens) is bigger than the team now." The eventual outcome of this saga will be based on Clemens' pitching performance. Still, when a variety of mouths, who usually can't agree on anything, holds hands on one issue, it leaves the door open for anyone else questioning Yankee management's credibility. With FranDog yesterday, Cashman tried selling the notion that discussions about creating separate rules for Clemens commenced in December 2006. This is hard to believe. If the Yankees were in first place, does anyone in their right mind think Cashman, Torre & Co. would have given Clemens carte blanche? Also, the way Cashman kept telling FranDog to "ask Joe" how the players reacted when the manager asked them about letting Clemens come and go as he pleases, suggests this is all a highly orchestrated game of tush-covering. No one likes looking desperate. Now Cashman, Torre & Co. do. They all better hope McCarver is wrong. They better hope their 44-year-old pitching mercenary came to the Bronx to win a title. Not to pocket millions. And spend weekends with the family. John Harper spinning things for the yankees... http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/col/harper/index.html -

] The NFL and NBA drafts have been televised for years. Now, Major League Baseball is joining the trend. For the first time in its history, the baseball entry draft will be aired live on ESPN2. Coverage will begin on Thursday, June 7th at 2 p.m. ET from Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. The broadcast will end at 6 p.m. ET. Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig said the telecast, "will give fans access to see this critical function of an organization's development. This is an idea whose time has come." Each team's first round pick will be televised and all clubs will have a maximum of five minutes to make their selections. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays will have the first selection. The San Francisco Giants will have three picks in the first round, while the Toronto Blue Jays and the Texas Rangers will each have two first round choices. The draft will have 50 rounds and will conclude after all 30 teams have passed on a selection or after the final selection of the 50th round, whichever comes first. I would think the viewer would not be subjected to drunken fans at Disney, although ESPN might encourage it.
