  2. Silly Hot Stove talk ] Frank Russo, on New York Baseball Digest Radio's Yankee Special, mentioned that his connections have shared that the Mets are accepting inquiries for Carlos Beltran. And, further, according to Russo, his sources have also shared that there's a rumor of a possible deal between the Mets and Yankees which would breakdown as follows: Carlos Beltran from the Mets to the Yankees in exchange for Robinson Cano (with the Yankees taking on most of Cano's contract), either Jose Veras or Brian Bruney, Ian Kennedy, and another prospect from the Yankees system.

  4. Yeah the sticker on the brim is all the style , that and the sticker that gives the hat size in the under side of the brim.
  5. The style now days is to keep the tag on , at least here in NYC it is. I don't get it either but tags are the thing now.
  6. Has the makings of a sweet jail house sports movie starring 'The Rock" or some other such waster.
  7. Sorry , I forgot to mention that this arrest was made courtesy of Aflac. I'm sure Burgos is saving at least 15% this.

  10. Mets' Burgos jailed for 3 months ahead of trial By DIONISIO SOLDEVILA 4 hours ago NAGUA, Dominican Republic (AP) New York Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos will be jailed for three months while awaiting trial for a hit-and-run accident that killed two women. The 24-year-old reliever told The Associated Press that a Dominican judge ordered him to remain behind bars Wednesday night out of concerns for his safety. "I am going to come out of this fine because my conscience is clear, and I'm not worried this will affect my career because I haven't done anything," he said in the jailhouse interview. Burgos is accused of abandoning the victims of the Sept. 30 accident and fleeing, charges that can carry six months to two years in prison. He disappeared after the accident but turned himself in Tuesday.
  11. I'm just being a dick DocTee , the Mets though do have Juan Lopez #56 listed as the bullpen pitcher.
  12. Funny how things go , I never heard the story before yet in playing along today his name popped into my head. Bullpen coach might be too high a profile gig for him , bullpen pitcher it is then.
  13. Manager - Manuel Bench - Oberkfell First Base - Alomar Jr Third Base - John Stearns Hitting Coach - Moises Alou Catching Coach - Kelly Stinnett Pitching - Wharten Bullpen Coach - Bruce Berenyi Bullpen Pitcher - Juan Lopez will be retained.
  14. I read the other day that Conti is a certain goner once the Mets cut ties with Pedro. I guess one question is how much say Manuel has in the coaches that stay or don't stay. Clint Hurdle just fired three of his coaching staff , Bob Apodaca survived as did the first base coach. ] "It was a painful day for me, but obviously not as painful as it was for them," Hurdle told The Denver Post today. "I did this because I thought it would make us better next season. It's tough because you have to separate personal relationships."
  15. Yeah it's not like The Players Union don't put their own pressure on certain big ticket players to take the most money.
  16. Here is an item form the Seattle times , running through the list of candidates. Tony Bernazard Vice president, player development, New York Mets Age: 52 Background: Played 10 seasons in the major leagues as a second baseman, including 80 games for the Mariners in 1983. Most of his executive experience since his playing career ended in 1991 has been with the players' union. Was a special assistant to Donald Fehr from 1992 until joining the Mets in December 2004. Played a key role in labor negotiations, salary arbitration and globalization while working for the union. Also served as GM for six major-league All-Star teams that competed in Japan. Was a special assistant to Mets GM Omar Minaya, and now runs the Mets' player development department. Ran into controversy this year with allegations that he helped undermine manager Willie Randolph, who was fired in June. I'd hire him in a minute to run my team.
  17. Bernazard runs the Mets' player development department so I would see that as an important role. If we are to believe what we read then Tony B was in tight with the Wilpon's and is very close to Minaya. It's an opportunity for him to move on I guess to bigger things.
  18. A Pirates blog attempts to answer why they have been so bad. http://www.bucsdugout.com/2008/9/7/609478/pirates-tie-record-for-mos
  19. I bet the people doing the selling are thrilled that Seaver cares so little about his old locker. It certainly I think would help them if the lockers most celebrated occupant was the sentimental type.
  20. ="Benjamin Grimm":3ry1nr85]I just made a purchase from the vultures who are taking apart Shea Stadium. The front staircase in my house is going to have, hanging above it, a sign directing visitors up to the Loge level. Those going down the stairs will be directed to the Gate B exit. I think this will be much cooler than a pair of stadium seats! I was told that they have to have Shea emptied of all removable parts by this coming Monday. At that point everything will be carted to their warehouse in New Jersey and shipped from there. I should have my sign by the end of October or early November. They couldn't tell me the shipping fee. I'll have to just hope it's not too much. I thought about it and decided that I'd be more likely to regret NOT getting a piece of Shea Stadium than I would be to regret spending the money. The sign will cost about as much as a few nights in a hotel room when we're on vacation. ($500) I'm guessing the shipping will be about another $100 more.[/quote:3ry1nr85] I like that , sounds better than seats to me. Please take some pictures when you have them up. HahnSolo Oct 08 2008 10:02 AM If they can find it at Shea, I'd like to purchase Aaron Heilman's lost confidence. Couple of hundred bucks should do it. I'd even give it back to Aaron at no charge. Frayed Knot Oct 08 2008 10:35 AM ]"The Mets will donate their portion of the net proceeds to the Mets Foundation. The Mets Foundation funds and promotes a variety of charitable causes, including educational, social and athletic programs for young people in the community." "Their portion" being the important words here. Part of it is going to the city (they own the stadium) to defray the cost of the demolition. Part is going to the Mets as mentioned. And part is going to the firm that's handling the deconstruction, the head of which has already claimed the 410' sign portion of the wall for his own. I don't think anyone has said how big a portion goes to who. But it reminds me a bit of those inter-city charity AIDS bike rides that seemed to fall apart a couple years ago after it was revealed that only about 20 cents on the dollar were getting to the intended target; people don't mind paying the price as much if they think the money is going to a good cause. Hard here to figure out how much of this stuff is. Benjamin Grimm Nov 07 2008 12:21 PM I just got a call from the MeiGray group. My sign measures 23 inches by 64 inches and weighs 32 pounds. It's too heavy for UPS to ship, so I have to decide whether I'm going to go pick it up myself, or have it shipped by a private trucking company. They're going to get back to me next week with the exact shipping cost. The estimate is "about $100." Their warehouse is in Bridgewater, NJ, about a 50-mile drive from my house. Edgy DC Nov 07 2008 02:16 PM Go get it. We need some inside intelligence about getting into that warehouse. Benjamin Grimm Nov 07 2008 02:20 PM I hadn't thought of that! Hmmm.... Benjamin Grimm Nov 19 2008 08:19 AM I have an appointment to go pick up my Shea Stadium ramp sign on Saturday morning. (Thereby saving $150 in shipping costs.) Edgy DC Nov 19 2008 09:07 AM Yeah, that was me. Hooker. Sorry. seawolf17 Nov 19 2008 09:17 AM Wait, you can buy hookers through MeiGray? (It was an "MBL" charge.) They'll counterbalance the Vet Stadium seats that are already in my backyard. Benjamin Grimm Nov 24 2008 12:38 PM Well, I made my Saturday trip to the MeiGray warehouse in Bridgewater, NJ and retrieved my Shea Stadium ramp sign. The warehouse is near exit 13 of I-287. When I got there my sign was ready for me but I did get a chance to see the inside of the warehouse. It was like a Museum of Shea, except that the exhibits were stacked on metal shelves. I saw one of the Mr. Met "Thanks for being part of the Shea Stadium experience" signs that I coveted but didn't want to spend $1500 for. I also saw some scattered SNY signs and the sign that hung over the Dugout Shop. There were also a lot of the V-shaped signs (I never thought of them as V-shaped until I saw them on the floor of the warehouse) that had hung over the tunnels leading from the interior of the stadium out to the seats. You know what I mean, the signs that would tell you what section the tunnels would lead to. I don't recall having seen those on the price list so I don't know what they were selling for. The one nearest where I was standing was for Mezzanine Section 19. Anyway, my sign is 23 inches tall by 64 inches wide and weighs 32 pounds. It doesn't explicitly say "Shea Stadium" on it anywhere, but for anyone who knows Shea it couldn't be from anywhere else. The part that says "Loge Level" is color-coded blue. It has a picture of the neon catcher from the outside of Shea and says "Gate B" and "Third Base" on each side. The sign is in pretty good condition. There are a couple of scratches on it and some paint drips. The paint is kind of a putty color. My guess is they were painting the wall or ceiling or ramp above where the sign was hanging and some paint dripped down. The sign also has a tiny little hologram sticker on it that has a unique code number. Apparently if I ever decide to sell the sign, the buyer could key in the number on MLB's web site and verify its authenticity. I think they're doing this with most collectibles these days, but other than yearbooks and stuff like that, I don't have much of a memorabilia collection. In fact, this sign is my total collection. I also have a little folder with a certificate of authenticity. I haven't photographed the sign yet, but once I do I'll post the pictures here. We're going to eventually hang it above our front staircase, but we'll have to figure out the best way to do that. For now it's leaning against a wall in our downstairs. I know there are some here who have a principaled objection to buying these pieces of Shea, but not me. I look at that sign and I love it. I just plain love it and I'm so glad I have it. It's truly unique. It could only have hung in a specific part of Shea Stadium. I wish I had known I was getting it when I was last at Shea in September. I would have gone to visit it with my kids, and we could have looked up at it in its original location and pictured it one day in our home. My daughter has already told me that she wants to get the sign after I die. I told her to marry a Mets fan so that her future husband can appreciate it too, and she said she'd try, but that she wouldn't marry a Yankee or Phillie fan. And that she'll move to New York if she has to do that to find a Mets fan. seawolf17 Nov 24 2008 12:40 PM Jealous. ="Benjamin Grimm":2ycs1iz9]My daughter has already told me that she wants to get the sign after I die. Benjamin Grimm Nov 25 2008 07:43 AM My guess is that it has something to do with the positioning of the sign. R for Ramp. B for Gate B. And 4 as a sequential number. Maybe it was the fourth sign along the ramp leading to Gate B. Willets Point Nov 25 2008 07:43 AM I think that's the name for the ramp. Ramp {Gate}B #4. 23. ="soupcan":jpz2yo9y]After a few emails to different sources it turns out that M&N was in fact the provider of those jerseys at the Shea ceremonies. John Cougar Lunchbucket Oct 07 2008 08:48 PM I might know a guy G-Fafif Oct 07 2008 10:35 PM ="batmagadanleadoff":1mub057a]About 10 years ago, M&N did make a 1973 Mays Mets jersey. Sometime thereafter, M&N became a wildly successful vintage uniform manufacturer ... particularly with the hip-hop crowd. That segment favors unreasonably large sized jerseys. M&N caters to their hip-hop customers. Hence the 4XL sizes. With respect to Russ Gompers, that would be "Stitches", in Queens. They've been lettering and numbering Mets uniforms since the early '90's. They weren't involved with the Mets when the team wore their two button pullovers. The last name lettering on some of those unis (definitely '79 and '80, maybe '81) was the most unique font the Mets ever used for their player last names. Thick, and wide, and each letter noticeably distant from the next, even on long last names. If anyone can dig up a photo of the back of Kranepool's '79 uniform, you'd see what I mean. His last name was a semi-circle, beginning and ending below his armpits. Both the "K" and the "L" were entirely sideways, 90 degrees from upright.[/quote:1mub057a] One of the strangest sensations I've ever had as a Mets fan was tuning in the opener from Wrigley in '79 and seeing names on the back of Met uniforms. It was just so unexpected. It almost felt like cheating. I can see those big clumsy letters arching just as you describe them. Benjamin Grimm Oct 08 2008 07:08 AM I even remember the first name I saw on the back of a Mets uniform: CHAPMAN. I think he was the second batter in the first inning, and we saw his name on his back after he singled and rounded first. soupcan Oct 08 2008 07:18 AM I remember thinking how cheap the Mets were that they used 'nameplates' rather then stitiching on each individual letter Benjamin Grimm Oct 08 2008 07:24 AM Yeah. In 1980, the Mets wore sans-serifed numerals on the home unis. Check the provenance on that Brooks jersey. Either the Mets got sloppy with Brooks' first uni ... or something else. dcrules01 Dec 21 2008 01:56 PM The pinstripe Was actually a MItchell and Ness Valentine I think I mistyped that I was up all night googling lol..No it looks gen nint the numbers came right off now I tried stripping the road because I wanted that to be a Flynn but the glue was bad and the numbers would not come off at all so I had it re sewn at Stitches. On the gamers the Cubbage and Taveras nameplates were restored which I think is a good possibility with the Brooks also since a ton of these were recycled in the minors from what I understand...Do you have your collection on line id like to see it.. G-Fafif Dec 21 2008 02:55 PM Flynn's Expo top blows my mind. The road New York Cubans...is that from a turn back the clock promotion? Or authentic Negro League? dcrules01 Dec 21 2008 03:17 PM Its from the tbc promotion its Todd Zeiles jersey he wore it in 04 I also have a TBC NY Cubans from 02 on the way it was worn by Turk Wendell diffrent style Edgy DC Dec 21 2008 03:51 PM Whenever you're ready to talk about the chiseled male torso on your TV screen, go ahead. I'm not so much into the 'game-used' thing I'd just love to have a Flynn that is true to the style when he was with the Mets. Do you know where I could find one - I've exhausted every avenue I can think of with no luck. Kong76 Dec 22 2008 07:31 AM I got someone you can ask, I'll pm his email address to you. dcrules01 Dec 22 2008 07:33 AM What size are you?? Ill sell you my Youngblood you can strip it or send it to EPS and have them strip it and they can make it into a Flynn. The Youngblood has 3x but fits more like a 2xl..There was just a Mays on ebay size 46 which im confused because they only come s m l xl xxl xxxl xxxxl that sold ..They pop up once in awhile.. batmagadanleadoff Dec 22 2008 11:22 AM ="dcrules01":1pg8w5tc]On the gamers the Cubbage and Taveras nameplates were restored which I think is a good possibility with the Brooks also since a ton of these were recycled in the minors from what I understand.. Do you have your collection on line id like to see it..[/quote:1pg8w5tc] Yes. I didn't think you could've found that Brooks jersey with Hubie's nameplate still intact. The Mets, as you said, recycled their uniforms, especially during that era. An undesirably high number like Brooks' 62 uniform would've ultimately ended up anywhere in the Mets system .. any minor league level, the instructional league, spring training. As an example --among other jerseys I own, I have the uniform that Jesse Orosco wore in his first game ever. It's a #61 uni and it was issued to Orosco temporarily because his regular #47 jersey didn't arrive in time for the Mets '79 opener. That jersey was also recycled -- there are barely visible outlines of a nameplate once affixed to that jersey after Orosco wore it. My collection is not online. It's not even on display. It's all packed up. I have a project (all in my head) to eventually display my Mets collection. One day, I might even get around to doing it. I think that there's at least one other member here who collects Mets jerseys. He has a very good sized collection of game useds, M&N's and retail authentics, if I remember correctly. ="dcrules01":1pg8w5tc]What size are you [soupcan]?? I'd guess that most ebay M&N's are fakes. Some of the fakes are comically inept. But even the fakes that look reasonably accurate might be made of inferior fabrics. They might not wear well, or last very long. dcrules01 Dec 22 2008 11:29 AM If you ever want the Orosco nameplate restored lmk ill give you my guys info he does great work as you can see from the Cubbage and Taveras nameplate..Yeah I remember that Orosco being for sale that is a gem piece you have and display your items it drives my wife crazy but in a way she says it keeps me outta trouble or so she thinks lol.. batmagadanleadoff Dec 22 2008 11:53 AM ="dcrules01":2iy1cg4g]If you ever want the Orosco nameplate restored lmk ill give you my guys info he does great work as you can see from the Cubbage and Taveras nameplate..Yeah I remember that Orosco being for sale that is a gem piece you have and display your items it drives my wife crazy but in a way she says it keeps me outta trouble or so she thinks lol..[/quote:2iy1cg4g] Orosco never had a nameplate on his #61 uni. The jersey was issued to him for one game only. dcrules01 Dec 22 2008 01:14 PM So was it a carry over from the 78 season? Im confused lol I thought you said you could see where the nameplate was.Interesting Mets wore this style home from 78-82 but changed the road in 82.I have a Zachary and Swan road 82 I love them.. batmagadanleadoff Dec 22 2008 01:53 PM Orosco appeared without a nameplate. And yes, it was a 1978 issue. I suppose that there wasn't enough time to affix a nameplate to Orosco's temporary game jersey. Either that, or the Mets simply didn't care about the aesthetics, knowing all along that Orosco would wear #61 only until his regular #47 arrived. Teams usually carry spare jerseys in case of unanticipated screwups. I know that the Mets do. When the team realized that Orosco's regular jersey didn't arrive in time, I suppose that he was given any old available number. Orosco was a rookie and thus, unlikely to complain about wearing such a high number. He was probably just happy to be there. The nameplate was affixed after the jersey was presumably recycled to a lower league. I was using that jersey to illustrate how Met jerseys were recycled. That jersey, like your Brooks, was worn in only one Major League game. You're right about the '82's. In 1982, the Mets changed their road unis, adding racing stripes and eliminating both the two button pullover front collar and the sleeve end piping. These elements would be added to the home unis the following season. I have two 1982 game useds -- a Mike Scott road and a Joel Youngblood home. dcrules01 Dec 22 2008 02:13 PM Flynn and Youngblood were my guys I would kill to have a Youngblood if you ever consider moving it or if something would interest you in a trade I would do it in a heartbeat.. soupcan Dec 22 2008 02:32 PM He'll trade you Youngblood for Flynn. 24. That's really good Edgy, and I like them for some of those reasons too. One of the coolest tings I ever saw in my short baseball following life was the Wagner Card at a traveling HOF road show. I was in awe.
  25. Thanks for that FK , apparently Pittsburgh have a decent front office now so hopefully things will get better for them. Don't know why but I like them .
