  1. Your not literally making a case are you? The way I see it is like this.......how many teams out there can give Halladay the big fat contract extension he will command . I would think that JP would not trade him within the division despite what Harper and the other fools say. So that leaves the Mets ......done and dusted...
  2. I shouldn't have used Verne's article, he just had to get his yankee crap in.
  3. Looking forward to this documentary tonight on HBO at 9:30 From Newsday ] BY VERNE GAY | verne.gay@newsday.com 4:23 PM EDT, July 13, 2009 THE DOCUMENTARY " Ted Williams: There Goes the Greatest Hitter That Ever Lived" WHEN | WHERE Wednesday night at 9:30 on HBO REASON TO WATCH Fair-and-balanced portrait of the game's greatest, Joltin' Joe excepted. WHAT IT'S ABOUT The 2003 headline in SI.com almost wrote itself - "Splendid Splinter Chilling in Scottsdale" - and, really, you couldn't blame the headline. It was doing what came naturally and obviously to headlines. In fact, the cruelest part of this extraordinary life may have happened after it ended in 2002: The family fight over Williams' remains, which would eventually wind up in a cryogenic storage facility in Arizona. As The Splinter's nephew tells HBO, when he's mentioned to people these days, they say, " 'Oh, is that the frozen guy?' That's the sadness." Wednesday night, the record is straightened: The early days in San Diego, the move to Boston, battles with the fans and media, enlistment in the Navy Air Corps; back to Boston and the near-World Series win in 1946 (when he batted .200); then on to the Korean War to fly for the Marines, and back to Fenway again with skills still intact. He had - redundantly and dutifully add here - incredible stats: The last player to hit over .400 in a full season (.406 in 1941), 521 career home runs, .483 on-base percentage. "Trying to sneak a fastball by him," says Bob Feller, who sneaked many fastballs by many people, "was like trying to sneak a sunbeam by a rooster in the morning. It just wasn't gonna happen." But there was much, much more besides baseball: Wives, children, wars, fishing, charity. . . . Many people are interviewed, including George H.W. Bush and Robert Redford. BOTTOM LINE I guess I could advise you to call up and order HBO for one night if you're not already a subscriber just to see this film, but that would seem rather extreme. Still, it's not the worst idea in the world because "There Goes the Greatest Hitter" is an elegant, moving portrait that's almost achingly fair. You - even if you are a Yankees fan or because you are one - will be mesmerized. GRADE A+ HBO link http://www.hbo.com/events/ted-williams/index.html
  4. I'm feeling 50 plus wins here folks.
  5. It's better than The Onion because it's true........jeez
  6. This has got to intimidate Kim Jong iL
  7. IIRC the Mets didn't have the players to get Santana either . Halladay will want an extension I suppose , he's signed through next season. http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005/01/toronto-blue-jays_05.html
  8. One thing I liked about Obama in the booth was he came off like a bit of a piss taker , or a ball buster if that's your style. I'd check youtube search as I'd not be surprised if it was up there nymer.
  9. metsguyinmichigan wrote: Is it me, or is FOX overdosing on the Obama thing? It's not like the president doesn't throw out the first pitch at games from time-to-time. It's been a part of almost every interview. you're not an Obama guy though are you? I thought Obama was great when in the booth, I was in bed by ten and was not surprised when I checked the score that the NL lost.......sucks

  12. Thanks MLB & FOX for making me feel like shit watching the wonderful ordinary people who make extraordinary contributions in life.
  13. Oh for fucks sake stop it Joe Buck ......opening into.....little kid playing theball.....Buck's voice over tells us that this is America's game and " nowhere is this more true that in St Louis"....... another 4 hours of this
  14. I don't like it , I root for the Mets to win every game they play. It's not like rooting for the Knicks to "win" the lottery ....
  15. I bet the St.Louis fans will even cheer for the AL team during the player introductions.......that's never happened anywhere else .......
  16. President Obama will throw out the first pitch.......expect Jeter to be front and center.
  17. I've never seen the NL win...... this one counts.....
  18. I'll watch casually...................although we might take a walk to the park instead...... Any word on who's going to give the NL team a pep talk......didn't Mike Schmidt do it last year?
  19. Phillips getting a lot of face time these days , but yeah I'm surprised he won. Phillips last night during the HRD said Wright would have benefited from being a participant to get his home run swing back.
  20. Why closer to Manhattan when you live closer to Philly? the image is very beautiful , great capture.

What gets me that management had to "hear" from the fans before realizing that we want Mets history to be incorporated into a Mets ballpark. A smarter management would have built a team HOF right away instead of as an afterthought. Benjamin Grimm Jul 14 2009 11:04 AM I wasn't thinking of my own convenience. I just think the stadium would be better located closer to Manhattan so they'd be able to get more of the after-work crowd. Vic Sage Jul 14 2009 11:56 AM its easy to get there after work. It's a 35 minute ride on the 7 train, or less on the LIRR. The problem is driving during rush hour, but that would be the problem even if you drove to the east side from the west side. G-Fafif Jul 14 2009 12:20 PM Great picture, no surprise, considering the lensman. Park and setting still need to be surrounded by a city block for full effect. Otherwise it still smacks of Arlington Comes to Flushing rather than homage to St. Ebbets. Farmer Ted Jul 15 2009 03:28 PM Took in the game on Sunday. First time to Citi. Had recent trips to PNC and Safeco so I was anxious to do a some comparison shopping. Overall a definite A. I got there early so I was literally the first person to the Shake Shack. Yum. Only an hour before game time and the place was mobbed. So here are my drawbacks: 1. Food court. Serious congestion here before and during the game. Put a destination location at the stadium and everyone flocks to it. I say tear down some of the junk yards across the street, install a foot bridge, and put some more fun stuff over there to ease the food mess. 2. Concourse width not enough. Then again, maybe the concourse is wide enough but you lose 10 feet of space with the cashier ropes that jut out from the food counters. Who thought of this traffic nightmare? 3. Home Run apple. I'll give a pass to the apple not coming up for Tatis' home run. I was turned away trying to get to the OLD apple since there was a private reception on that level. Fuckers. I was impressed with the staff at the game. Tons of staff in an array of colored shirts. Lady behind me got up in between innings and the schmuck behind her spilled beer on her seat. Dude was sloshed and subsequently tossed by security for being "that guy". No fewer than five staff showed up including one supervisor to wash down and scrub around her seat. NEVER saw that at Shea or any other stadium. I had the usher nazi in my section. No ticket, get out. Ninth inning and want to sneak down for a closer look? Tough shit. The place looked great. Still a bit sad about the vacant parking lot next to it. Surprised to see the brackets holding up piping in the stadium were rusting. Yeah, rusting. Speaking of Rust. No homage to Rusty Staub? Boog Powell and Greg Luzinski have their food pits. Until the area around the stadium is cleaned up, Safeco and PNC still get a slight edge for convenience and accessibility. I was happy that the place turned out to be a top flight facility. G-Fafif Jul 16 2009 12:50 PM I think CF looks best when viewed from 126th St, though that's not really the ballpark. The admin building looks like a civic institution there, like a school or post office from the 1930s. Fits into a neighborhood even if the neighborhood isn't there. I like the back end of it, supporting the Willie Mays Bridge and the Pepsi Porch, as viewed from the Promenade as well. A bit of an OP@CY warehouse feel. Just a bit.

  23. ="Frayed Knot":2jt4u252]Nice little mini-discussion by BP's Kevin Goldstein[/url:2jt4u252] on the Berroa pickup - one which says as much about the mindset of angry fans as about the move itself. Some of the reader comments below are insightful as well.[/quote:2jt4u252] The first few readers comments were interesting , I liked what Brian Kopec had to say....not at all surprised that the comments degenerated towards the end. Frayed Knot Jul 14 2009 08:47 AM BP tends to have a thinking man's audience so one would expect the comments there to be a bit more intelligent than the ones Goldstein references came though on his Twitter account, comments I didn't read but really don't need to to know that they're most likely the electronic equivalent of semi-literate screeds etched on bricks thrown through a window. We're long since past decrying the toss-it-against-the-wall-and-see-if-it-sticks approach. I've mostly adjusted to a 2003-04 expectation set. Every now and again, the optimist in me harks a healthy "Yeah, but..."; a little bit of scotch and/or ice cream usually clears that right up. John Cougar Lunchbucket Jul 14 2009 09:11 AM I think the SHaMs are gonna rock for just this reason. Angel Berroa might suck but getting a guy who won't automatically urinate the game away to play in place of Cora once or twice a week is the kinda thing that's gonna make a diff.

  25. From Newsday ..... Mets' Delgado, Reyes look good in drills BY RODERICK BOONE | roderick.boone@newsday.com 8:33 PM EDT, July 12, 2009 ] As the Mets head into the All-Star break, they received some positive news on the injury front Sunday after Carlos Delgado and Jose Reyes looked good in their baseball activities. Delgado took batting practice in an indoor cage for the first time since he had hip surgery May 19, and both he and Reyes went through agility drills before the Mets' win. Still, there's no set timetable for their return. Delgado seemed to really push hard on his drills and did so fluidly, rotating between running straight ahead and side to side as he picked up his feet and placed them back down in each square he was running through. "It felt good," Delgado said. "I was able to go out there and crank it up a little bit more and it felt good. So we are very positive about that." Delgado, who just started hitting soft-toss pitches and fielding grounders this week, said he has to continue to work on his range of motion and build up strength and endurance. He said he's supposed to head to Port St. Lucie Monday to continue
