  1. This is scary , all the best Jon. NEW YORK -- Jon Niese came away from an examination with team doctors Monday satisfied he had no significant heart issue, but the New York Mets left-hander expects to undergo a minor surgical procedure during the All-Star break to correct a heartbeat that occasionally becomes irregular. Niese was pulled from Sunday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals after tossing six scoreless innings as a precaution because he experienced a rapid heartbeat during the game. He also was forced from a June 25, 2011 game at Texas, with comparable symptoms. Niese indicated he likely will have a minor surgical procedure during the July 9-12 All-Star break. "But I wouldn't miss any starts," Niese said. "It's an 'ablation,' they call it. They go inside the heart and they crimp something of some sort -- like the cause of it. It's like an outpatient thing that they do that it only takes like three days to recover from after that. So that's why I think we might be doing it All-Star break. That way I don't miss any starts." Niese then displayed for reporters a brochure explaining the surgical procedure, which he had in his Citi Field locker after returning from the medical examination. "Down the road I'll probably get something done to stop it all," Niese said. "But for right now it's nothing serious." Niese wore a Holter monitor for 24 hours after the 2011 episode, and an echocardiogram and an EKG were performed at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit -- the Mets' next stop on that road trip. Doctors did not detect anything alarming at the time, Niese said, and the issue largely was dropped. Niese said he underwent comparable tests Monday that also found nothing alarming. This time he will not be required to wear the Holter monitor, he added. Niese's next start will come on a full week's rest, Sunday at Yankee Stadium. Manager Terry Collins described the extra rest as related to Johan Santana's altered schedule and not as a result of Niese's issue. Santana, coming off a career-high 134 pitches in a no-hitter against St. Louis, will be delayed two days from his regular turn and start Friday in the Bronx. Because Santana and Niese both throw left-handed, Collins wanted to slot right-hander Dillon Gee between them Saturday, prompting extra rest for Niese. Also Monday, right-handed reliever Jon Rauch was getting a postgame exam with team doctors. Rauch has been experiencing elbow tenderness, Collins said. Rauch served up the game-deciding two-run homer to Allen Craig in the eighth inning of the Mets' 5-4 loss Monday. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cardiac-ablation/my00706
  2. Speaking of verbal gymnastics .....listening to the Fan this morning and they played a clip of the Seattle announcer doing pbp with the bases loaded....this was his call......"the sacks are packed with seamen...........um, Mariners" it was hilarious....
  3. Edgy DC wrote: Well, if there are web pages that say that superstition is good, then it must be true. Many of which are professional journals and academic theses. Does this really have to be a divisive issue? Is there any human on earth who feels he or she was poorly served, deceived, or left confused by Howie Rose? Not at all, his call of the last SO was a thing of beauty, I'm going to cut Howie some slack here, we all know he's a huge Mets fan and like the rest of us didn't believe it until it happened. I don't think he was unprofessional , John Sterling he is not(although I like him too).
  4. Frayed Knot wrote: The fact that he's doing all that verbal gymnastics simply to avoid the 'N-H' word is silly. And the whole stupid thing about this so-called 'Jinx' is that it's supposed to apply to mentioning it to the pitcher himself for fear of reminding him or heaping on extra pressure. That it somehow morphed into announcers not being allowed to say it to listeners or you not saying it to your buddy on the next barstool is a bit mind-bending. Yes ,and now we can add twitter to the list outlets where saying no-hitter can cause a jinx , pretty sure Heyman got abuse for mentioning the no-hitter in progress.
  5. Four game sweeps, how rare?
  6. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Didn't hear the radio broadcast but I'm sure Howie made it clear to listeners what was happening. I'm sure he played up the "no mention" thing as schtick even it was schtick he believed in. yes, I should have said Howie didn't use the term no-hitter according to Neil Best Cohen spoke openly during the game about the unfolding no-hitter; Rose opted to avoid using that term for fear of jinxing Santana.
  7. Very cool, good for you that you were there.... read after that while Cohen openly mentioned the no no Howie refrained from it......
  8. This is the first I have heard about extending Terry......not a priority, agree with Bucket there , although I think this front office would not appoint a person radically different than Terry if it came to that, a so called free thinker(whatever that means) like Joe Madden doesn't strike me as an Alderson type......
  9. I think we could quibble about every managers in game stuff, obviously some are worse than others, Collins does seem streets ahead of the previous ones.
  10. I've really grown to like Terry a lot , he seems like the perfect man for this team and seems to have changed the thinking around the place. No more talk of threading water until so and so pitcher/hitter comes back, the guys that replaced them need to produce. The players seems to really like playing for him and he seems to genuinely care about them. Thoughts?
  11. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Re the ESPN Bay talk -- is anyone here clamoring for Bay's return? honestly, no...I really haven't even been thinking about him...during the no no I wondered if he makes the Baxter catch, that's the context in which I think about him, it's a shame but ..

  13. Torres with a triple......great game to watch...
  14. Gwreck wrote: batmagadanleadoff wrote: Or if eff Wilpon wasn't too cheap to re-sign John Olerud. Incorrect and false. Olerud specifically wanted to go to Seattle. yep, wanted to go cos of the great coffee system they have up there.
  15. Yep, sounded like Francona was oblivious to the Bay we have seen.
  16. STFU Francona " boy if the Mets get Bay back and he produces like we know he can, wow, boy, talking about a leader in the middle of the order, one of the great guys in the game yyybbb"
  17. can't place the guy on the right? and wtf can't I watch this anywhere?
  18. NEW YORK No joke: Bill Maher has bought a minority ownership stake in the Mets. In a surprise announcement made by the comedian and political commentator before Sunday night's game against the Cardinals, Maher said that he purchased one of the reported 12 minority stakes available to investors over the winter. "First of all, I think it's a great investment," Maher said. "People sometimes forget that there's only one National League franchise in New York City and they're not making anymore. I'm a Met fan my whole life and I think it would be a great place." Neither Maher nor Mets officials would comment on the percentage of his ownership piece or how much he paid for it. The 56-year old Maher who was raised in River Vale said that he never intended to buy a piece of a sports franchise. That changed after seeing newspaper stories about the Wilpon family offering up minority ownership portions of the team due to the Mets debt, as a result of their associations with jailed Ponzi scheme orchestrator, Bernard Madoff. Maher, who lives in Los Angeles, began to become interested in purchasing a piece of his favorite baseball club. "It happened months ago," Maher said of the deal. "It's the first time I've been in New York, so we didn't say anything. But I read about it in the paper in December saying the Mets were available that you could buy these limited partnerships." Mets Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications, David Newman, said that Maher official title will be "New Partner." "I'm just a fan," Maher insisted. "I'm not going to get involved. I think my role is going to be bringing luck to the team they didn't have a no-hitter for 50 years, I buy in and I come to town and there's a no-hitter. Draw your own conclusions." 19. Wearing black to honor Franco they say. Makes sense , when I think of him he is wearing the black.
  20. To answer my own wtf , Mets announce Bill Maher as a new limited partner, at the field tonight meeting and greeting.

Mets had 8 runs, 8 hits. Add up the pitch count 1+3+4=8. Johan is #57, Gary 57 when he passed. Then it dawned on me that somebody wearing a Carter tshirt was celebrating with the Mets after the win. And to think security pummeled him. Howie and Josh made a big deal of "Not Today" winning the 10th race at Belmont today in relation to @metswfan nightly/daily "Not today/tonight boss" this is funny, I was down in the garage with the kids who were loud and when Howie got all exasperated setting this up I actually had my ear to the old as shit stereo system* I have down there to hear what he had to tell us(he had just found out), and then it was that.....lol, I was expecting something profound, especially as Lewin had brought to my attention that Cater passing at age 57 t the other stuff floating around the place lining up with kid.... * - bought it in Times Square not long after I got here in 1994......still works great , one of those 7 disc CD changer ones......big and loud with fuzzy FM..
