I would have to question my fandom if he came to town and could definitely see taking some time off from the Mets. Really?, wha about Nelly Cruz or Peralta? -

I doubt the Mets will steal him with Alderson's stated intention of not doling out a $100 million contract .....of course for a player like him that would need to change...it would be some steal though.

Ah, Jeff meeting clients in posh hotels, reminds one of his video montage sales pitch to Glavine.

Well, by the cut of him I'd say the Mets are well loaded at first base.

Davidoff had this too....his people asked to meet with the Mets... Jay Z was in toe....but as noted in the article they already looked for ten years $310 million from the MFY's so...but hey if things go pear shaped with the MFY's you never know what price he can be got at. I dislike him now but of course that is subject to change.

Martion had an interesting article the other day.....a few things,, 1) the Mets are looking for nicer players, avoid the surly ones...and the players need to buy in the Mets offensive philosophy...interesting jabs here at Byrd....sound slike someone in management feeding needless info to Martino. In selecting new players, NY Mets need fewer sourpusses, and want more people to buy in to offensive philosophy BY ANDY MARTINO The Mets are trying to spend more money than in recent winters, acquire more power, and ultimately win more games. But the team has identified other goals, too, which need to remain high priorities: Avoid divisive personalities, and increase player buy-in to its offensive philosophy. In Sandy Aldersons previous three offseasons, the GM was shackled by budget constraints, and forced to choose from an undesirable pile of free agents. In many cases, he did not choose well, signing guys who brought a sour vibe into the clubhouse, in some cases creating more trouble than was justified by their limited contributions. It began with catcher Ronny Paulino and reliever D.J. Carrasco in 2011; the former was uninterested in following game plans, and the latter drove the coaching staff crazy with frequent whining about his usage. Subsequent years brought Jon Rauchs unrelenting surliness and Frank Franciscos unwillingness to pitch, along with attempts to dissuade youngsters from doing so. Shaun Marcum was, well, not charming, and while Marlon Byrd arrived with a questionable reputation, he was generally a pleasant surprise in the clubhouse -- save for what many Mets people saw as his overcoaching of teammates. It is that latter point that the Mets want to address, in addition to bringing in more pleasant people. On every level of the organization up to major league hitting coach Dave Hudgens, Aldersons staff has spent three years working to instill a hitting philosophy that stresses plate discipline and on-base percentage. Agree or disagree with that view -- many baseball folks criticize it for making hitters less aggressive, a characterization that proponents dispute -- it is one that the GM insists on. Players like Byrd and Daniel Murphy are good hitters, but operate in a mode that is far from Aldersonian. Byrd is an aggressive swinger, unwilling or unable to draw many walks (his walk rate last year was a lowly 5.4 percent), and more than willing to encourage teammates to follow his own ideas while they worked pregame in the batting cage. That is one of the reasons the Mets did not pursue a reunion with the outfielder, who signed a two-year, $16 million deal with Philadelphia on Tuesday. The Mets are open trading Murphy for similar reasons. Murphy has earned the respect of the front office by working to turn himself into a passable second baseman, but he is another aggressive hitter, whose style does not fit what the general manager, hitting coach, and organizational instructors teach. This is one of the reasons that the team might be ready to move him. It's not that every Met has to be the same player, but the front office would like to see a higher percentage of the lineup mirror its overall philosophy. As club officials note, it is easier to enforce standards on minor leaguers and rookies if those youngsters see veterans modeling the program. Byrd and Murphy have many strong qualities as hitters, but they will never do that. Both Curtis Granderson and Nelson Cruz, free agents outfielders in whom the Mets are interested, would be better fits from both a personality and performance standpoint. Both have reputations as nice people; the only knock on Granderson is that he is pleasant, but not a leader, and while Cruz carries Biogenesis baggage, he is known as a nice, if quiet, guy. On the surface, Granderson does not seem like Aldersons type of hitter. Although his career on-base percentage is a respectable .340, that number sunk to .317 in 2012, the outfielders most recent full season. When I pointed this out to a Mets official, that person immediately mentioned being impressed by Grandersons walk rate, which at 10.2 percent is better than Byrds, Murphys (5.6 percent) Cruzs (7.9 percent), or Jhonny Peralta (8.3 percent). The Mets might not sign either Granderson or Cruz, after seeing the frenzied outfield market develop; a trade for an Andre Ethier or Nick Markakis is also possible. Either way, it is time to end the era of sourpuss imports, and free swingers -- time to be more selective about the people invited to Queens. (Photo by Mark Bonifacio/New York Daily News)

Martino wraps up the nonsense, and wow, Boras actually did sat that! ORLANDO -- Wednesday should have been a normal, regular, average early offseason day: Mets officials sat with agents, reports and rumors filled your Twitter timeline, and Scott Boras made a Scott Borasy comment. It only got weird because so many fans of the team are loaded up with a complicated blend of fried, excited, skeptical, exhausted and impatient. The one takeaway from an afternoon filled with a big hot mess of nonsense was that the Mets will only be taken seriously, by the industry and public, when they follow through on pledges to spend more money, and win more games. Here is the timeline: In the morning, Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon stopped to speak with reporters gathered at the J.W. Marriott Grande Lakes for the final day of the GM meetings. Asked about his teams pursuit of free agents, Wilpon said: Weve got a couple more meetings. And there might be hopefully something cooking later. Right now, its quiet. Sandy (Alderson) has been in meetings all morning. Hes got a couple more meetings this afternoon. So well see where we are. Was that a hint that moves were to come, maybe even by the end of the night? Well, you can see where Wilpons words might be interpreted that way, especially by a fan base so eager to know which players the Mets will acquire, in an offseason where they promise to be more active. But no, he did not explicitly say that the team was going to sign a player or complete a trade before 11:59pm on Nov. 13, 2013. In reality, it was just another hot stove day. Alderson and his lieutenants, J.P. Ricciardi, Paul DePodesta and John Ricco, split off into meetings. Eventually, one of those meetings will produce an agreement with a player -- it could happen any moment -- but team sources made clear that as of Wednesday evening, nothing was imminent. Ok, cool, whatever. Nothing to see here yet, but the Mets are working on stuff. In a completely unrelated development, the Mets sent out news releases announcing Boyz II Men and Huey Lewis concerts at Citi Field. Which, if you can stop being angry for a moment, youll realize is kinda funny. Try telling the Internet to laugh. The people tweeting at me were not pleased with the Mets. Matt Cerrone, who runs one of the bigger fan sites, the SNY-affiliated Metsblog.com, wrote: I hope the Mets are aware of how bad this looks to their hungry fans. I mean, while 99.9% of their online fanbase were typing with their hair on fire, moaning and groaning about feeling mislead [sic] and disappointed, the team is tweeting about Huey Lewis and Boyz II Men... it speaks to just how thirsty we are for action, which should be a note to the team about our mental state That last point is actually the core of this whole hot moment. Lets review Mets history since the early, glorious days of Omar Minaya in 2006. There was the Adam Wainwright curveball, the divisional collapses, Jerry Manuel chuckling, Bernie Madoff, Matt Harveys UCL. Conditions are supposedly improving soon, but it hasnt happened yet. Until it does, a portion of the fan base can be excused for being irrational and antsy, and Boras can be excused for jabbing the team. "The Mets are like NASA," Boras said Wednesday afternoon at the GM Meetings. "They have big rockets, a lot of platforms and very few astronauts. Astronauts are hard to find. They've got one guy with the 'Wright' stuff. That's for sure. And they've got a lot of 'Arm'-strongs, too. But they're certainly a club that I'm sure is in a pursuit of a higher level of talent. Har har har. Come on, thats decent stuff. And the Mets werent mad. Said one high-ranking team official, Well, were trying to get more astronauts. I dont think theres a problem with him saying that. The astronauts are expensive this year. Marlon Byrd, who is hardly John Glenn, convinced the Phillies to guarantee him $16 million dollars. Everyone is shocked by the asking prices, said one Mets official of the available free agents. The team knows that in order to sooth a frazzled fan base, it will have to transition from shock to acceptance, and pay someone before long.
