  1. This would have been a little late for another Moises Alou thread.
  2. I must have overlooked this split last season: John Maine was 6-1 with a 1.98 ERA at Citi last season...the lost was in his Citi debut and he won his last six.
  3. Opening Day followed by an off day is bullshit. 51 hours is a long time to wait.
  4. My problem with Downey is that he has made a career out of playing snarky, witty, arrogant douchebags with a fair amount of charm. I have a harder and harder time liking his characters, so I also have a harder time rooting for them. I'd like to see him play somebody other than an older version of Ian from Weird Science.
  5. A sunburn is better than frostbite on Opening Day.
  6. Also, JJ Putz pitches a scoreless 8th for the victorious White Sox.
  7. Ex-Met Carlos Gomez went 4 for 5 with a HR in Milwaukee's loss to Colorado.
  8. Santana 3 Wright 2 Barajas 1 Bay 1 Francoeur 1 Matthews 1 Nieve 1
  9. Put it in the books...the best opening day team just got a little better on opening day. I'm glad baseball is back.
  10. Little Cat.
  11. Same old Marlins...wowing with their defense.
  12. The new guys are impressing today.
  13. Damn you, Jorge Cantu.
  14. I for one don't mind the creamsicles at all.
  15. I didn't like it much at all. I haven't seen a movie that's knocked my socks off in a while. BOO!
  16. Here, here. I wish them the best...and hope we have meaningful games in October. I think there would need to be total devastation for this season to be any worse than last season. For that reason alone I am excited about 2010, even if they finish 4th.
  17. Niese named to SI's Ten MLB rookies to keep tabs on list http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/joe_lemire/03/31/instant.impact/index.html?xid=cnnbin&hpt=Sbin Jon Niese, Mets SP Pitching coach Dan Warthen has proclaimed Niese's curveball to be the best in Mets camp, and that wasn't even the 23-year-old southpaw's most effective pitch in last season's 25 2/3 inning major-league cameo. That honor belonged to Niese's cutter, which he throws 87 mph to great effect, inducing a high 1.4 groundball-to-flyball ratio. A high school teammate of Dodgers starter Chad Billingsley, Niese could pitch as high as third in the Mets' rotation this season. He's gotten results at every level of the minor leagues (a career strikeout rate of 8.2 per nine innings), including an eight-start stretch in Triple A last summer in which he went 5-1 with a 0.96 ERA. With some notable left-handed power bats like Ryan Howard of the Phillies and Adam Dunn of the Nationals in the lineups of NL East foes, Niese should fare well.
  18. No Wright? I'd like to see a strong performance from Maine today.

First guy to drive in a run - Bay 12. First Met player to field a batted ball - Francoeur 13. First Met to draw a walk - Castillo 14. First Met relief pitcher to make an appearance - Feliciano 15. First Met to reach base on an error - Jacobs 16. First winning Met pitcher - Santana 17. First losing Met pitcher - Igarashi 18. First Met to throw a wild pitch - Pelfrey 19. First Met to be hit by a pitch - Francoeur 20. First Met pitcher to plunk an opposing batter - Pelfrey Tiebreaker bonus (if necessary): Date of Jerry Manuel's first ejection - 05/01/10
  20. Expert picks are no better than yours or mine. If their picks were anywhere close to right, it would make the baseball season pretty meaningless since we would find out in March who was gonna win in October.
  21. I can't see him ever getting to 300...even if he played until age 50. If he got close enough that ESPN were making stories out of each of his starts, I would root for him though.
