A Boy Named Seo wrote: ... so if he got what he wanted (and very likely beyond that), I wouldn't expect him to call the Mets or anyone else. That's right. Because he didn't wanna play for the Mets any more. If he was seriously considering staying here, he would've gotten back to the Mets after the Rangers made their offer. Unless the Mets had made it crystal clear that they weren't gonna make deGrom an offer better than Texas's. He didn't get back to the Mets because he didn't wanna play here any more and he was worried that the Mets would eventually top Texas's offer if he did get back to the Mets, forcing him to fess up about not really wanting to play here.

Well yeah, I wouldn't expect deGrom to admit he was done with NY before the game even started, assuming that was the case. And if the Mets weren't willing to match or top the Rangers' offer, then someone should say so. But nobody's even asking. They're simply letting deGrom politic his way around these issues with his insulting canned and extremely unconvincing answers. And so long as that's the case, I'm gonna assume he no longer wanted to play for the Mets.

=TransMonk post_id=118991 time=1677603825 user_id=71] I've got no ill will toward deGrom leaving. I agree he didn't want the Mets, but believe he simply wanted a different challenge and a change of scene for his family. We were lucky to have him for as long as we did and as good as he was.

I guess the Rangers pulled a Lou Cabrazzi on deGrom, took a gun to his head and told him that either his signature or the blood from his brains was gonna be on that contract. That's what I'm gonna believe until deGrom answers the fucking questions that no journalists are even bothering to ask. Why didn't deGrom get back to the Mets? (Because he didnt want to.Because he didn't want to play for the Mets any more.)

Edgy MD wrote: I think he means competition between multiple agencies vying for the sweet MLB contract. That's not how I read it. If so, then why that first paragraph after "Preliminary takeaways"?.

I don't see how this constitutes competition. MLB dropped one exclusive ticket provider for another exclusive ticket provider. If there's any competition, it's to see which ticket provider can deliver the most money to MLB. If fans benefit from whatever deal is ultimately struck, well that's just incidental. Competition, as far as fans are concerned, would be when fans can choose from several ticket providers.

So then why didn't he give the Mets a chance to match the Rangers' offer? Is it because deGrom was satisfied with the Rangers' offer and was worried that the Mets would come back with an offer he couldn't refuse? That interview doesn't answer anything.

=nymr83 post_id=118757 time=1677174732 user_id=54] Maybe they did take a poll. The rule changes sound exactly like what people responding to a random surveymonkey poll would think are good changes, as opposed to what people attending or watching games think.

Frayed Knot wrote: btw, during a trip to MLB.com a day or two ago I was greeted by a headline, You Spoke, We Listened: Rule Changes for 2023 iow they're trying to sell this as something driven by popular demand rather than a top-down 'solution' to either unrelated or non-existent problems. Can you find fans who are going to like some or all of these changes? Sure! But, like the lazy practice of what passes for today's journalism where citing what 'Twitter' is saying as the basis for a story, it's a case of cherry-picking those who agree with your pre-determined outcome as justification and/or cover for that outcome. The section explaining the rule changes is still there. The headline is not. MLB has been doing that since at least, the Bud Selig era. "We took a poll...", Selig would begin, to justify anything. Anything. Trump does it all the time - "People have been telling me everywhere I go...." Marjorie Taylor-Idiot did it yesterday- "Everyone I talk to tells me this ....." It's chapter one from the con artist's playbook.

It's a very sensible plan, but it's a lot easier said than done, even for a superduper rich guy like Cohen. I mean, your prospects and draft picks have to pan out. That ain't necessarily gonna happen just because Cohen's got lotsa money. The thing about signing top tier free agents still in their prime is you have a better handle on what you're gonna get than you do with draft picks. Everybody has plans. But like Mike Tyson liked to say, "everybody has a plan to beat me, until I punch 'em in the face the first time".

McCarver, I thought, was so much better than those who preceded him. Those were great Mets years, watching the powerhouse Davey Johnson Mets with McCarver, et. al. in the booth. The best ever, probably. On a personal level, and I don't exactly know why, but I'm deeply, deeply saddened to hear of this loss. For some unknown reason that I can't quite put my finger on, yet, McCarver's death is really making me sense my own mortality. More so than Seaver, for example. Almost to the point that I have a bad feeling in my stomach from learning this.
