Anyone aware of any links to this video online? It is priceless! Absolutely should be rolled out at Shea on a semi-regular basis. The clip is available on the "25 Years of New York Mets Baseball: An Amazin' Era" video. The Mets appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show on October 19, 1969. Other guests on that show were the musical group Smith, Cyd Charisse and Joan Rivers.
  3. The Mets generate a big first inning, providing Santana with a three run cushion. Mets 3, Marlins 0 after one inning. The inning also demonstrates (at least to me) why Randolph should've been fired already, or better yet, never have been hired to begin with. With Reyes on second base with a lead-off double, Castillo's sac bunt is bobbled by the pitcher, who is then unable to throw Reyes out at third. If Randolph had his way, if the sac bunt went according to plan, Castillo would've been thrown out at first, having sacrificed himself to advance Reyes. Easley's RBI sac fly would've been the third out. And no runs would have scored, instead of three

  5. I know all about the DL. I even referred to his injury history. But even when he's not injured, he's a once every week and a half starter.
  6. AG/DC wrote: He keeps getting hurt. If he never plays, he'll never get hurt. Or maybe Billy Wagner could remind Castro to stop getting hurt.
  7. Frayed Knot wrote: Play Castro more. I still don't fully understand why Castro doesn't play more. Not just this year, but last year. I assume that he's somewhat fragile and is physically incapable of taking on such a load based on his injury history, but don't specifically recall ever reading this.
  8. Frayed Knot wrote: How 'bout hitting him leadoff and switching Reyes to #2? He's not only getting on better than Reyes but stealing better too and not getting picked off. Removes bunting temptations as well except for base hits. Wow. What an excellent idea. Plus Reyes' offense, such as it is, is comprised of less walks and more slugging, so Castillo would get moved around the bases with greater efficiency batting before Reyes. I don't have much confidence in Castillo anymore but I have to admit, grudgingly, that he's getting on base at a very respectable rate this season. That Castillo's OBP is more walking than hitting strengthens the case for Castillo as lead-off hitter. I would imagine that this is all as unlikely as sticking Carter and Randolph together into the same potato sack, though. Randolph probably thinks that Reyes' stolen bases matter more than all of this and wouldn't want some runner, ahem, "clogging it up" for Reyes.

  11. I'd stuff as many baseballs as I can into the mouth of Luis Castillo and then take a picture of him like the one that's on the cover of Exile on Main Street.
  12. I would make Gary Carter the manager and then when everybody got to the game, I'd say "Just Kidding".
  13. Who's the threadstretcher?
  14. I'd hire Gary Carter as bench coach. I'd put Gary in the same potato sack together with Willie and have them race Castro and Casanova before the game. Then I'd make Willie and Gary stay in the sack throughout the game also.
  15. I'd like to see Raul Casanova and Ramon Castro in a potato sack race.

  19. It would take 40 fuckin' car crashes for Backman to manage these Mets.
  20. Sounds like Willie's staying. For now. Press conference happening right now.
  21. Frayed Knot wrote: That he objected to Carter's subsequent whining was probably more annoyance at Gary's penchant for butting in when he wasn't getting all the ink than it was about having to share his newly minted 'C'. I agree. As far as I remember, Keith never openly complained about having to share his captaincy with Carter, and was always diplomatic about the situation whenever asked.

  23. ]Keith Hernandez said: "... I've kept quiet for such a long time, but for the people out there listening, just go in the dictionary and look up unconscious and you'll find a picture of Gary Carter" Keith's "for such a long time" phrasing interests me. Who knows what deep-rooted animosities exist between Keith and Gary? Carter's narcissistic pursuit of the team captainship that was originally given to Hernandez only always bothered me. If Davey Johnson originally intended for Keith and only Keith to be the Mets captain, then that should've been a part of Keith's legacy. And it was selfish of Carter to manipulate Johnson otherwise. Carter essentially diminished the great honor bestowed upon Keith in order to tame his own jealousies. I can still remember Hernandez being interviewed right after Keith's team captainship was diluted into two co-captainships in order to placate the spoiled Carter. When asked how he felt about it, Hernandez politely said that it was Davey's decision all the way and if that's how Davey wanted it to be, then Keith was fine with it. I could swear that Keith was rolling his eyes during the whole interview. Carter's no Kid. He's a baby. A spoiled baby. I hope that the next Mets manager is assigned uniform #8. Or the next call-up.
  24. ="Frayed Knot"]Keith just called Carter "unconscious" Def #1: without awareness, sensation, or cognition Here's Keith's exact quote: "Keith Hernandez ripped his former New York Mets teammate, Gary Carter, during Saturday's game on New York's WPIX-TV, calling him 'unconscious' in the wake of Carter openly campaigning for the Mets' managerial job currently occupied by Willie Randolph. '... I've kept quiet for such a long time, but for the people out there listening, just go in the dictionary and look up unconscious and you'll find a picture of Gary Carter,' Hernandez said. "I know that's strong, but it just happens too many times and it's just, you're walking around unconscious." Carter said in a radio interview Friday that he had reached out to the Mets when he learned Randolph's job might be in jeopardy.
