  1. That ad was pulled by the Mets after Commissioner Frick fined Casey Stengel $500.00 for violating the Baseball rule prohibiting anyone under MLB contract from appearing in an ad for alcoholic beverages while in a baseball uniform. The ad appeared in many magazines through May of 1962 and also, in commercially larger sizes in public spaces, including subway stations. Casey and the Mets would get the last laugh on the Baseball establishment. Next year's Rheingold ad campaign included Casey posing with Loretta Rissell, Miss Rheingold 1963. This time, Casey appeared in civilian clothing to satisfy the rule but Miss Rheingold was photographed in a Mets baseball cap alongside Casey. There was nothing in the rules preventing the model from wearing any part of a baseball uniform. Here's a link to the 1963 ad. http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=MZ9&um=1&sa=1&q=rheingold+stengel&aq=f&oq=&aqi=&start=0 Misc: Kathy Kersh appeared in two Batman TV episodes in 1966 as one of the Joker's underlings. She would marry Burt Robin Ward a year later in what would be a turbulent two year marriage. In the 1962 ad, Casey is poised to lay down a bunt even though Kathy Kersh is standing behind Casey and holding the baseball. Casey's heavy socks were not standard issue Mets stirrups, but two tone blue over white sweatsocks. Trivia: Where'd those socks come from?
  2. Me too. But barring a major improvement, Frenchy isn't one of our best players. If he is, we're in trouble.
  3. Did I ever tell anyobody here how much I hated Willie Randolph? Because I hated Willie Randolph. Let me tell you. Like from about the second or third Met game he ever managed. I hated that idiot so much that his presence in a Met uniform alone, detracted from my ability to enjoy the 2006 season. If the 2006 Mets won 97 regular season, then it was despite of, and not because of Willie Randolph. If there was such a thing as WAR for managers, Willie gets a negative seven or ten. When the 2006 Mets were running away with the division '86 style, all I could think of is that now it's gonna take at least another year and a half to get rid of Willie Randolph. Because I hated Willie Randolph. I vote 2000, even with Timo Perez not running and Rickey's .400+ OBP gone and Zeile on first because Olerud was in Seattle and the MFY's, in the end, celebrating another one of their WS coronations on the Shea Stadium infield. Because of Willie Randolph.
  4. Mets interested in right-hander Wang NEW YORK -- For years, the Yankees have brought aboard high profile players who have been discarded by the Mets or who have merely left the Mets on their own. See Dwight Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, Todd Zeile, Robin Ventura, Armando Benitez, Jose Vizcaino, Lee Mazzili, Kevin Elster, Lance Johnson, David Cone, Daryl Boston and John Olerud, to name a dozen. The moves have gone the other way as well, but the train does seem to run from Queens to the Bronx more often than visa versa. Now, a chance exists that the Mets will bring in a pitcher who has made his mark -- and what a mark it was -- with the Yankees. The Mets have interest in Chien-Ming Wang who, until last season, was an integral component of the Yankees' rotation. Wang was among the 39 players who were not tendered contracts by their incumbent clubs who became free agents at midnight Saturday. And he is one of several the Mets intend to contact. read the rest ... http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20091214&content_id=7810630&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
  5. I hope the Mets don't stand pat but even if they do, they're bound to pick up 10-15 Wins just by staying healthy.
  6. What, me worry? Omir Santos won the Topps Rookie Cup!
  7. Edgy DC wrote: Still, there's probably too few people in the Lombardi-Torre-Piazza-Posada family: catchers who are poor defenders but game enough to keep at, with a team who tolerates their presence because of batsmanship that outclasses all or most of catchers in the league. Mike (and I'm sorry for even bringing up the bastard) Scioscia.
  8. August 23, 2009. The Mets spot the pennant winning Phillies six first inning runs in Pedro Martinez's first start against his ex-teammates, but battle back. Comeback highlights include an Angel Pagan inside the park Home Run gimme when Phils centerfielder Shane Victorino stops chasing the line drive, incorrectly assuming that the umps would call a ground rule double. Pagan's drive ends up wedged in the outfield wall padding but the umps rule that the ball is nevertheless playable. In the bottom of the ninth, down 9-7, the Mets first two batters reach base. Jeff Francouer steps up to the plate, representing the winning run with nobody out. You know the rest.
  9. 104 on the '80's Mets. I aced the X quiz. http://www.sporcle.com/games/gumbyman/mets_x_firstname

  11. My favorite Whitey Herzog story occurred almost 38 years ago to the date, when his then employer, the New York Mets, were trying to contact him without much success. Herzog was out in the wilds on some hunting/fishing vacation and was finally located, but not without difficulty. The Mets, it turned out, needed Leroy Stanton's telephone number -- Herzog was the only person who had Stanton's number. When he asked the team what was so important about needing Stanton's number at that moment, the Mets informed Herzog that they had traded the young outfielder to the Angels and wanted to notify Stanton of the trade before the media did. Herzog asked who the Mets were getting in return for Stanton. When he discovered that it was Jim Fregosi, Herzog was disappointed and told the Mets that he wouldn't have traded for Fregosi -- who Herzog described as washed up and overrated even in his prime. Herzog didn't know yet that the Mets also included Nolan Ryan in that trade.
  12. Oh, enough already with that Topps Rookie Cup. Omir Santos sucks.
  13. Isn't that what they used to say about Sandy Koufax before Sandy Koufax became Sandy Koufax?
  14. If Derek Jeter was so much as half the Sportsman of the Year that SI wants us to believe he is, he'd admit that Usain Bolt should've won the award.
