The Mets would need to stay in contention until the All-Star break so that they then can, hopefully, pick up a valuable part from some other team cutting bait. That's one scenario. That is definitely THE scenario. Just don't know if they can follow it. Yes. Everything's easier said than done.

Wilpon strikes me as an ego driven owner that abhors dynamic personalities -- the strong, knowledgeable type that will fight for his way, clashing with the brass over ideas and constantly telling management what it probably doesn't want to hear. A successful manager is likelier than not to possess many or all of those characteristics and will, among other things, tell Wilpon where the hell he can stick Jeff Francoeur if the Mets are serious about fielding a contender. Bobby Valentine was such a manager, but I think that V developed a good deal of his swagger as a Met. It's no surprise that Wilpon's first meaningful order of business upon acquiring total team ownership was to can Valentine. I'm hoping for the best, though.
  4. The view from last place must be dark. And smelly.
  5. I'm with Swannie. In this era of pitch counts and the vanishing complete game, no team can afford to carry a pitcher who'd be limited to garbage time appearances. And even if this were not true (which it is) Perez should do whatever the team asks. Personally, I don't see the debate here. Ollie's being a selfish fuck, compromising his team's ability to contend for the sake of his own ego. metirish wrote: I've been a huge supporter of Ollie...we have a shared heritage after all...... Jeff Francoeur is about as pumpkiny as a pumpkin as he ever was. And pumpkinier! In the month of May, Francoeur (2010 season - .230/.295/.393) has drawn just one walk. My theory is that between last season and this one, he's learned to take the pitch that's seven inches or more off of the plate. His strike zone judgment was historically, so bad that pitchers could screw up his at bat by missing far. Frenchy's adjusted, thus resulting in his torrid start. So now the pitchers have readjusted. They've discovered that they can still get him out with bad pitches, but they need to miss the plate by smaller distances. Jeff Francoeur sucks. Again.
  7. Baywatch: what Jason just did to that last pitch over the plate.
  8. Lotsa good stuff from Joe. Nice find, Leiter. seawolf17 wrote: It'll be fun when the Mets win the World Series this year and I can buy a copy of his book to remember the great run. I'd pay for that book even if the Mets don't win another game for the rest of the season.

But that's some neat trick! Even with Castillo's best years presumably behind him, he's still on-basing better than almost every other Met. Ike (just slightly) and Wright are the only Mets with better OBP's. That Jerry Randolph is not batting Castillo leadoff and also, using Castillo --one of the likeliest Mets to get on base and thus, not make an out-- to make intentional outs by sac bunting (and, immediately before the heart of the Mets order, no less) might be the most inefficient use of Mets resources. It's criminal.
  10. Wanna know what's dumber than sac bunting when Catalanotto's the next batter? Sac bunting when Bay and Wright are the next two batters. And why would Jerry Randolph call for the sac bunt with the batter deemed worthy enough to bat third?

  12. Chuck Carr?

Not labeling him an antiChrist, or telling you what you should think, either. I'm just saying that the local-boy-made-good thing isn't plucking at my heartstrings a bit for this one. He wasn't doing the job in spring training, and they went with him anyway, in large part (presumably) because of the advantage he had over other 25th man candidates in positional versatility. He's played one game in the field so far this year. Catalonatto also played a few innings of left field this season -- not that this omission detracts from the main of your sensible post.
  14. Ike Davis stars as the winning run in .... THE IKEMAN COMETH
  15. What a surprise. The Mets don't score in the same inning that Jerry Randolph puts on the sac bunt. I don't understand why the booth went on and on about "The Book" and playing for the tie at home and how Jerry was engaging in a one-run strategy. Because in "My Book" sac bunting is a no-run strategy.
  16. Based on his career stats, Reyes should be batting second or third, given who the other current Mets starters are. But if you're going to decide this simply based on Reyes' last two weeks*, he should be batting fourteenth. I don't understand how the media and fans are getting so worked up over Reyes not batting leadoff, but practically ignore Matthews batting first, or Matthews starting. * I wouldn't, unless Reyes has developed some new condition, unbeknown to me (but not to those that are paid enough money that you'd think they'd notice these things), that has permanently diminished his skills.
  17. That inning illustrated why Castillo should precede rather than follow Reyes. If the batters (and events) were reversed, the Mets don't score, and strand runners on first and second.
  18. At least we're still getting the back pages.
  19. T is for Timo, the fastest Met. But not when it mattered the most, I regret.
  20. Being a half game out of first on the third of May without Carlos Beltran is more than anyone expected when this season started. And tomorrow (today, really) we get Ike Davis back in the lineup, whom the Mets apparently can't win without.
