Expectations of Eleven: Ike Davis
batmagadanleadoff replied to Edgy MD's topic in New York Mets Talk

I'll wager $10 to the charity of your choice that Ike Davis does not finish in the top 10 in NL road home runs in 2011. OK. You're on. Are we talking about rates or raw #'s (as if it's gonna matter)? -

You guys are making Duda sound like Adam Dunn lite. I would agree. -
Expectations of Eleven: R.A. Dickey

Arrested? I don't think that Wood gets the historical love he deserves. Wood never won a major award, and although Bill Veeck was the master at getting attention, Wood's teams were mediocre. Check out the SI cover for Wood's claw like grip on the incoming knuckler. -
Expectations of Eleven: R.A. Dickey
batmagadanleadoff replied to Edgy MD's topic in New York Mets Talk
In 1971, Wilbur Wood led the league in Pitcher WAR (10.7) and ERA+ (189). He finished 3rd in the Cy Young voting, though -- behind Vida Blue and Mickey Lolich. (career years for all three). As a way of gauging Wood's 10.7 WAR, Dwight Gooden's WAR in his great season of 1985 was 11.7. From 1971-1973, Wood may have been baseball's best pitcher --perhaps even better than Seaver. I'll take Wood's '71 from RA. -
Edgy DC wrote: I was bouncing Tapani around my head (actually bouncing "that other guy besides Aguilera that went for Viola"), but had no real crack at Lary. I thought Lary was the toughest, by far. In fact, when I first made the top 35 list, I skipped Lary. I caught him on the double-check.

The repeat guess penalty affected the final outcome. MM was sniped twice and lost six points as a result -- the exact difference between his four point total and Chad's winning score of 10. What did you think of that clause? (Props to LWFS for thinking it up in an earlier trivia contest). I though it discouraged latecomers from participating, what with all of the pages of guesses already submitted.

There's five points left on the board. Chad can clinch the championship by sitting out the rest of the contest to avoid any penalties. (Chad can't lose unless he incurs penalties).

Expectations of Eleven: R.A. Dickey
batmagadanleadoff replied to Edgy MD's topic in New York Mets Talk
Last Word: R.A. is to be honored by the BBWAA for the You Gotta Have Heart award, which is nice ... R.A. would be the favorite for the You Gotta Have an Ulnar Collateral Ligament Award. -
I thought I'd re-post the rules: Today, were looking for the top 35 Mets pitchers with the most career wins. (top 36, technically theres a three way tie for the 34th spot). Please read the scoring rules for this trivia contest because there is a new and dastardly scoring wrinkle. Scoring: Each pitcher ranked one through 29 is worth one point. Pitchers ranked 30 or higher are worth two points. There are no penalties for wrong answers. If you think that Mardie Cornejo belongs in the top 35 (36, technically) feel penalty-free to submit Cornejos name as a guess. Today, it's not wrong to be wrong. Do deduct three points for any post that contains multiple guesses. Deduct three points for any repeat guess any guess thats already been submitted by another forum member. This penalty will be enforced whether the repeat guess is a right or wrong answer. I suppose that this penalty might slow down those contestants who submit guesses in rapid fire torrent. But on the other hand, slowing down might allow another forum member to snipe your intended guess, thus triggering this penalty. Deduct five points for any posts that have been edited. No post editing. Even posts with no guesses will be penalized if they were edited.
