A Festivus Pole would be fun, and maybe work in a little Kwanzaa somehow? Maybe he should throw in a lasagna in there too. Plus one of those roasted pigs with an apple in its mouth. It's too cluttered as it is. I'll re-work that any way you see fit.... That's the uncluttered version Bats. Ha. Of course I will unclutter it if that is desired. I tried getting it some parts of the tree come forward. This was posted on the cardBlogThing last night (no CPF on this). [fimg=300]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-RWax6sCALi4/VJE8JN0VWKI/AAAAAAAAWPM/9PbzIwbBLIk/s576/2014mfcHappyHolidays-z15.png[/fimg] Picasa did one of those auto things--not sure why or how this happens, but they take a few of your pics and make a .gif from them. It ends up in my Picasa album. They did this: [fimg=300]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-za0jMKkhqv8/VJE9raYoWLI/AAAAAAAAWPY/fIjckFfjnDY/s576/2014Xmas-001-z15-MOTION.gif[/fimg] Would be pretty kool if I didn't have the site logo and name on the outside. Don't listen to me. But if you did, and you hadda work with the Mets skyline logo, I'd ditch the xmas tree and menorah altogether. It's too busy with those elements and in the end, you can't see either one too clearly. I'd swap out the baseball seams for some holiday wreath. And maybe add some falling snow. Or frost. Or ice on the buildings. I dunno.

Any season ticket or plan holders here? Did y'all get any holiday cards from the Mets this month? (Or maybe the Mets aren't broke enough to have ended their card tradition, but too broke to send partial plan holders a holiday card, in which case, you partial plan holders wouldn't necessarily know anymore).

G-Fafif wrote: Now that I see it, I'm like, "yeah...that's what it looked like." To be fair, I didn't memorize the text, either, but dug it out to look it up five years ago while recalling what it was like coming down from the most invigorating season ever. I don't know where my card is. But I do have a photo scanned into my PC, as you can see. You think Leigh Castergine gets a card from the Mets this month? She got one last year.

And, yes, the Mets misspelled millennium. Then again, they got one run out of a grand slam. Is that a black card with the Mets logo inside of a snowflake? That sounds very right. The place where I worked had a former employee who had gone on to temp for the Mets and she sent us the card. It hung in the reception area well after the alleged millennium kicked in. I judged it up for grabs and I grabbed it. Of course that Mets card was black, it being 1999 and all. I'm still waiting for the money saved from the Santana and Bay contracts to be put back into the payroll. This is a joke, right? The team might already be as much as 10 or 15% over budget and they tried to sell the public that there was a chance they'd pick up a $10M+/year* player. *Includes posting fees If that's true, they were already over budget and signed Cuddyer, so why would that prevent them from signing someone else? You could be right. But maybe, the Mets signed Cuddyer knowing all along that they would pare down the payroll going forward in order to squeeze Cuddyer into what might be the same budget as last year's budget. TBD

On the day that Hello Dolly premiered in movie theaters, the Mets sent out this holiday card: [fimg=655]https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8624/16042119331_2cfd545d42_o.jpg[/fimg] Courtesy of the batmagadanleadoff collection

We'll see. If they trade Murph for minor leaguers and major leaguers with little experience who don't make much more than the minimum salary, I'd suspect a salary dump no matter how the team describes it. I'd also suspect a salary dump if the Mets salary is eventually $10M or so below current levels. But it can get more complicated than to simply look at what the Mets get in return for Murphy to figure out if the Mets are dumping salary. All the future moves are related. So, for example, if the Mets can unload Colon and his $11M salary without taking on any significant salary in exchange, that would allow the Mets to take on more salary for Murph. So maybe, the way to determine if the Mets are dumping salary is to just look at the overall team payroll once the dust settles.

What if Sandy's not in on it? What if the owners lead Sandy on, knowing all along that at the eleventh hour, they'd pull out, leaving it to Sandy to make the announcement? Anyways, there are limitless ways to pull off a dog and pony show, even without Sandy's complicity. But what do I know? I don't. The Mets might've been sincerely considering Kang, I'll concede. Adding $10M to salary shouldn't be that burdensome, even for the Mets, especially if they're trying to dump Gee and probably Murphy's salary. Now if the Mets have to pare down to the sub $90M payroll levels of recent past because that's all they can afford, then that might be evidence that the Mets couldn't have afforded Kang. Time will tell. And even then, we'll never know for certain, so there'll always be plausible deniability for anyone who wants to deny.

Why does the next Mets SS also have to be a lead-off hitter? I realize that given the way the team is constructed, they'd kill two birds with one stone if they could find that guy. But these days, you'd be grateful for having a SS that merely doesn't embarrass himself with the bat. For some reason, okay, a lot of reasons, I'm not confident that it'll be the Mets coming up with the next leadoff hitting SS.

Why does this thread even exist? Is this guy willing to pay the Mets to play?

But it's pretty neat! I'll try to find some other examples of Mets cards. Wonder if they team will be singing again this year... The Mets have a very long running tradition of sending out Met themed holiday cards to its staff, season ticket holders and others. The tradition dates back to the team's original owners and has continued, unbroken to this very day even though the team's in the poorhouse and you would think can't afford anything. The holiday card at the top of this thread is from (December) 1977. [fimg=544]http://www.kcmets.com/CPF/mrmetxmas.jpg[/fimg] This one's from Winter 2006-07.

Man am I so on board with that one. I hated the Padres abandonment of their original color scheme from day one and I'm a Mets fan. Plus, those original Padre uniforms are the definition of baseball understated elegance. Plus, what Lukas said, I'd even prefer the tacky Padres uniforms that Dave Winfield so famously mocked over this blue and sand stuff. It's their identity. And while we're at it, let's bring back the Astros rainbows, too. Enzo Hernandez and Bob Barton and Nate Colbert. That's what the Padres are to me.

Ceetar wrote: The difference of course being that your 118 Mets ARE the 88 Mets if those signings don't work out, which for a third-place mid-70s win team, is quite a gamble. Are you actually better off with taking a shot and failing? Probably not. What you forget is that now you've got that dead spot on the roster, that it's rare for any team to just cut unless it's real close to the end of their commitment. With option 2, you still have to spend wisely. It's not free money to gamble with, you should still pick your spots. and sometimes that spot is next year. or via acquiring a player midseason that has a contract. Not only that, signing Abreu basically means jettisoning Ike DAvis for less, in Spring, because there is nowhere to play him. Duda too probably. So no, you probably don't get the playoffs. Because some of Abreu's production is going to come at the expense of Duda's. Most of it probably. Cruz doesn't hit 40 HR in Citi Field AND probably gives more of it back via defense. Especially over Chris/Eric Young and den Dekker and Nieuwenhuis. (presuming you mean instead of Chris Young) Oh, enough already. Stop complicating this with convoluted gibberish! A baseball team with a $125M payroll budget has more options than a team with an $85M budget. And the team with the smaller budget can spend its money unwisely just as easily as its wealthier counterpart can. -

Ceetar wrote: batmagadanleadoff wrote: Do you know that the team from Tampa Bay, competing directly against Bosox and the Yanks has two first place finishes and two second place Wild Card qualifiying finishes in just the last seven seasons? And they did it primarily by spending money to fix mistakes. No. The Rays are smart, but also relatively poor, so they can't afford to make mistakes. The Mets should be able to afford mistakes. That's the rich team's cushion and it's built into their rich team top percentile payroll.
