Dickey, and Kazmir are the Met-Ray interlopers of this thread. Dickey appears on a Blue Jays card. Thank you for playing. -

Hall of Fame Votes - REVEALED!!!
batmagadanleadoff replied to Frayed Knot's topic in New York Mets Talk
Frayed Knot wrote: Wonder if there was screeching that year (like there was a few years back) about how an election where no one passed proved that the system was broken and therefore needed a total and immediate overhaul. I dunno for sure, but the journalist character in Roth's book, Word Smith, went on a torrent of a rant over that no-inclusion vote. I read that book three times, and that's how I was able to remember, without having to look anything up, that no one was voted into the HOF that year. -
Hall of Fame Votes - REVEALED!!!
batmagadanleadoff replied to Frayed Knot's topic in New York Mets Talk
Wow. What a great family treasure of a baseball story, featuring baseball icons Willard Mullin and the HOF. Your dad was no slouch himself. A coupl'a things: nobody was elected to the HOF in 1971. Berra, the top vote-getter, received only 67% of the vote (242 votes out of the 270 needed for induction.) That year's HOF vote was the subject of Philip Roth's rambling free-association intro/first chapter rant in his The Great American Novel. Yogi was inducted the following season (now Yogi got to say "Wait 'till next year"), along with Early Wynn and HOF ballot first-timer Sandy Koufax. Prince beat me to the Mullin book reference. After I read your post, I wuz gonna cite that very recent WM book. Can't believe it took all these decades -- a lifetime, really, for someone to publish a book on Mullin's work. Wondering if there were legal/ownership hurdles that had to be cleared. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseball_Hall_of_Fame_balloting,_1971 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseball_Hall_of_Fame_balloting,_1972 If the Mullin book was already recommended, then I'll recommend Roth's book, above, a wild baseball farce that incorporates actual historical events in Roth's fantastic alternate baseball universe. -

You have to consider the stat in combination with other stats, just like in everything else. Yes, that. Not to mention they wouldn't bother investing in the technology and labor to measure that stuff if it didn't have some potential value. If they didn't think it had some potential value, y'mean. True. I was vouching for the stat, more than for Campbell. I'm not saying that the Mets data might support or not support findings that Campbell's a better hitter than his conventional stats indicate. I just don't know that and can only go by what the Mets say.

On the topic of Expos baseball card interlopers, Edgy solved the first interloper quiz ever -- only I wasn't calling it an interloper quiz back then when I snuck in a Floyd Youmans card in an old Expos/Nats card thread as a prank.

Let go by the Mets after he blew his arm out, Glass was drafted by the Expos in the '69 expansion draft, and eventually made his way back to the Tidewater Mets, all without ever making it to the Majors. This means that Glass played for neither the Mets nor the Expos -- an interloper extraordinaire. Thank you for playing.

Yeah. That and that Bench is throwing with his left hand. The photo's flipped. OE Know what's really annoying about the Wagner. The player name font on the Wagner is not like the original '76 font. -

I figgered the e was for expos and the l b was for league (de) baseball, figgering that's how they said it in french.

I figured you were seeing six to a row if Sosa was on top of O'brien. Oh, the other Cards interloper, in addition to Shamsky, is Leon Brown, who, like Shamsky, was just a STL ST invitee.

[fimg=265:34wfreir]https://farm1.staticflickr.com/356/19210016284_ddf5c114fd_o.jpg[/fimg:34wfreir] That's Jorge Sosa. How many cards per row are you seeing on your screen? I get three cards per row so Sosa's two above O'brien on my PC.

Those early Expos flannel unis, with their distinct stylized numeral font and the pencil thin striping at the end of the sleeves get better and better with age, like a fine bottle of (Bobby) Wine. Did you know that Ken Singleton was allergic to the Expos flannels? In 1972, Singleton's first year with the Expos, the team finally fitted him with double knits to combat his allergies. In 1973, the Expos outfitted the entire team with double knits, becoming one of, if not the last the last team in baseball to make the double-knit switch.

General All Purpose Baseball Card Thread - 2015

I love the Archives sets. I have a list of needs, Z, if you pick up more and wind up with doubles (http://bit.ly/wVFOp3), and I have a handful of doubles I can send your way if you need them too. Trout's RCs are in 2011: Bowman Draft #101 and/or Topps Update #175. Do you collect every card? Every set? You must have a gigantic collection. You probably need a whole 'nuther room just for your cards. When I put together those card threads on Mets who played for the current opponent, I discover many regional card sets that I'd otherwise, never get to look at. They come in handy for filling out those hard to find fringy players, or players who were on a team briefly and in the middle of the season -- and would thus, not appear in a major set. I wish some sponsor would set out to make Mets regional sets. Kahn's Meats stopped producing Mets sets about 20 years ago. Those sets used crappy card stock and the designs were basic and uninspiring, but man, those sets were large and very inclusive. Some of my favorite all-time sets were from the manager Art Howe era when Upper Deck produced their 40 man sets and Topps produced their Total (or Topps Total). Those were some large sets. Just about everybody got a card. The fourth reliever? Yep. Seventh starter on the depth chart who spent more time in AAA than with the big club. Yeah. -

I saw deGrom's inning pitched, and then stuck around until I realized deGrom wouldn't be returning for another inning. Those corporate money grab market surveyed caps baseball's corporate bean counters pushed out ruined my all-star experience. For me the MLB ASG was always about whatever Mets were on the team and the uniforms, the aesthetic spectacle, the pageantry of all those baseball colors, like I probably said in another thread or two. And those idiotic caps, to me, are a stain on the whole thing. Goddamnit.
