A tremendous piece of work. And the white toothpasty colored, early '67 outfield walls of Shea Stadium, which totally fascinated Zvon. This one took an enormous amount of time. He had asked me for suggestions for this project, which I was glad to give him. But the suggestion I remember the most is the one he didn't go for. I suggested a felt pennant, like the ones typically available at stadiums as souvenirs -- but of the 1966 World Champion Orioles, baseball's reigning champs as the 1967 season opened. I suggested that the Oriole pennant should be lying at the feet of the military-dressed Peppery Mets or in the foreground of the whole assembly. I thought the pennant would represent a humorous irony in that this ragtag group of Mets assembled for the Beatlesque cover would, two years later, make baseball history in so many different way by defeating those same Orioles in the World Series. But Zvon just wouldn't go for it. He wanted the Pepper cover to be as pure Mets as possible. I tried convincing him for a few days but after a while, I could sense he felt strongly about not including that pennant. This is a great piece, I think.

Sure. But in a 162 game season, there'd be more separation between the pitchers. This year, there's at least a half dozen pitchers that have a realistic shot at the NL Cy Young. Some of those have better chances than others, but they all have a plausible shot.
8. So I went through my bummed out moment last night, as the dream of deGrom winning his third straight Cy seemed to die after the Rays game. Sigh. I thought he was still in the race going into last night's game, but no longer among the real frontrunners after his next to last disastrous outing where he gave up three runs and had to leave after two innings because of a hamstring issue. deGrom was excellent last night. I'll take two runs allowed over seven innings with 14 K's and consistently hitting 100MPH on the gun every time out. But I thought deGrom needed to be even better than that to make a move on the Cy, plus needing for some of the frontrunners to get roughed up some in their final starts for deGrom to make up lost ground. But this morning, I checked fangraphs and deGrom's leading the NL in xFIP, and he's second in fWAR to Darvish, 2.7 to 2.6 -- and that one tenth that separates Jake from the top fWAR spot is statistically insignificant, especially where fWAR is a theoretical statistic anyways. So who the hell knows? It looks like deGrom's chances are better than I thought last night, right after the end of the Mets game. https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=nl&qual=y&type=8&season=2020&month=0&season1=2020&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2020-01-01&enddate=2020-12-31&sort=20,dhttps://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit≶=nl&qual=y&type=8&season=2020&month=0&season1=2020&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2020-01-01&enddate=2020-12-31&sort=20,d

10. I was actually thinking about this scenario. More like wishing, or hoping or dreaming. If true, this says a lot about what Sandy must really think of the Wilpons.
11. It's looking like soon, the Mets will have had two first place finishes in 32 seasons. This will be the Wilpon legacy.

13. Like this, for example Wow. Thanks for sharing. Never heard this one before. This has to be Tull's original lineup playing this cover, with Mick Abrahams on guitar.
14. Gary presents Earl Williams's '76 Topps card along with the fact that Williams beat out one-time Met, then Phillie, Willie Montanez for the 1971 rookie of the year award. The real WIlliams Met-connection story (that Gary left out) is that Braves Earl Williams and Mets Jerry Grote were almost added in to the big swap that included Felix Millan, George Stone, Danny Frisella and Gary Gentry.
15. it's baseball card theater in the booth as the game itself is beyond out of hand. Gary, Keith and Ron are pulling Braves baseball cards and adding commentary on whatever Brave player they happen to be pulling. So why does Gary, who did not play MLB, have better stories than Keith or Ron? [FIMG=333]https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/7193lkAaZFL._AC_SL1090_.jpg[/FIMG]
16. I know Nancy's livid about the lack of a Seaver statue at Citi Field. She's been quoted to that effect.

18. Conforto, Dom Smith and McNeil are four, five and six, respectively, in the NL Batting Average race --- and there's still enough season left that any of those three Mets, but especially Conforto and Smith, could still win the batting crown.
19. If they're not winning, at least they're fucking up Nola's Cy Youngish season stats.

21. As I see it, there's so much goddamn luck in baseball, more so than in any of the other sports and I don't think that it's even close, that I doubt there's much difference between two teams that finish eight, nine or ten games apart over a full 162 game season. I mean, there's probably some qualitative difference, but nowhere near what most people probably think. And now they're talking about a zillion playoff teams every season, not just this one. If that happens, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna lose an enormous amount of interest. I'll probably root for the stats but hardly the standings, which, given the state of the Wilpon Mets during the Citi Field era, it's what I do anyway.
22. You're with me, leather.

25. What youse all suspected is now official. The Mets are baseball's unluckiest team and The Athletic crunched the numbers from this furshlugginer season to prove it. https://theathletic.com/2057303/2020/09/15/a-big-week-for-baseball-meet-the-unluckiest-team-in-the-league/https://theathletic.com/2057303/2020/09/15/a-big-week-for-baseball-meet-the-unluckiest-team-in-the-league/
