OE: Did you try to make the balloons proportional to relative appearances the player made at the positions? Because if so, that's pretty brilliant. Yes! Nice catch. The balloons are not exactly proportional, but the bigger the position balloon, the more games he played at that position, relative to the other position(s). I had little choice with the Valdy shot but to go sideways or landscape mode.. That photo would've been unworkable in the portrait mode.

  4. I totally get what you're getting at. I like it. I like it a lot. I think it's a great idea. Especially the Matz, or a variation on that one.

  6. Not only will he be investing in his seasonal workers, he wants to invest in technology, too. From SNY: https://sports.yahoo.com/steve-cohen-plans-mets-technological-150322472.htmlhttps://sports.yahoo.com/steve-cohen-plans-mets-technological-150322472.html I read that article a few days ago. It appears that while most of baseball were the Jetsons with their technology, the Mets were the Flinstones. It's like one of those terribly underfunded schools where 40 kids in a classroom have to share two computers. Sad.

I think to make a good owner, one has to be: 1. Rich enough to fund a big market payroll 2. Smart enough to hire good baseball people to run the team 3. Humble enough to stay out of the way The Wilpons were 0 for 3. The rumblings around Cohen suggest he will hit the first two. The third remains to be seen.
  8. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Dear Typewriter Chewing Gum Co., I like the presentation of the names in the new subset, not sure I like the the borders but can you turn these cards over so I can see the back. Also, do these cards scale to standard BB card sizes? Signed, Roger Kaputnik Back 'atcha [FIMG=333]https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50470973833_b030b80dbc_o.png[/FIMG] Yes, Roger, these cards scale to standard sized baseball cards. They were designed to standard baseball card specs -- 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Didya try with the light blue right border? They make sense framing a circle The original design for this set -- code name You live, we give --was based on the logo shown above, including the color scheme, which is an older-school Pepsi color scheme. I generally prefer older school stuff. But after a few cards, I thought that the color scheme wasn't working. The old school Pepsi colors didn't work well with the Mets colors and the newfangled photography, whose colors are more vibrant. Old school Pepsi was more pastel-like and somewhat duller. Nothing wrong with that, but it wasn't suited for the baseball photos. So after about a dozen cards, we switched to the newer Pepsi colors, which are a much richer red and blue.
  9. Edgy MD wrote: The truth is that many or most retrospective looks at contemporary assessments of Steve Garvey could include the sentence "What a mistake that was." He was a really interesting player, and Hernandez seems to think of him as his superior, but he totally had observers flim-flammed into thinking he was something he wasn't. Garvey was the first player I think I really hated. Well, him and Pete Rose - Rose for obvious reasons if you were a Mets fan in those days. But Garvey, I was onto his statistical overratedness - but I also thought he was a phony, carefully cultivating his public image. Garvey had a very high fielding percentage -- but a below average fielding range. I remember reading an article in those days about Garvey's teammates criticizing Garvey for not going all out on tough grounders, supposedly for fear of making an error, in order to protect his fielding percentage. This resonated with me very much, as I determined to myself that the quotes were credible and an accurate description of what was going on.

  13. Frayed Knot wrote: But you ned to consider also their eras. Kent came up in the early 90s as the biggest hitter decade was just getting started. Morgan was a rookie in 1963, right as the most dominant pitching years were ahead. That's why the OPS+ numbers favor JM. Morgan was also the better fielder and runner - by a lot. Also, Morgan played a nice chunk of his career in The Astrodome, the absolute most brutal offense-suppressing park in modern baseball history, if not all of bsaeball history. And from his earliest playing days in Houston, in the pitching-dominant 60s, he was a walking machine -- when walks were grossly underappreciated. It's no coincidence that statistically, his career exploded as soon as he left Houston.
  14. Typewriter Chewing Gum announces the release of an exciting new (limited) 2020 Mets set. We've got a new sponsor, too. Watch this space for our latest -- code name: You live, we give.

  16. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I'd make Smith the left fielder. But I think there's probably going to be a DH. (When do we find out, anyway???) MLB should decide this matter sooner rather than later. Otherwise, it's not fair to the NL -- whose teams need to plan their rosters ahead of time.
  17. Don't know if this belongs here, but whaddya do with Dom Smith next year if there's no DH? Either you play him in left and take your lumps in the field or -- and here comes the ballsy part -- you decide to trade Smith. Or Alonso. You can't part-time Smith anymore.

  19. Benjamin Grimm wrote: If these things happen in threes, then Seaver/Brock/Gibson is certainly an example of that. But you can look at this as two sets of two: Seaver and Gibson and Brock and Gibson. In that case, Steve Carlton has to be doubly worried as he would complete two trios. Hall of Famer Joe Torre, too. Teammate of Brock and Gibson on the Cards and teammate of Seaver and Gibson on the Mets. In fact, it was Torre who offered Gibson the coaching gig on the Mets.
  20. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: That can't possibly be Hansel Robles I spent more time vetting that photo than any other in the set. I had some doubts at first because Robles's skin appears noticeably darker than that of the player in "the photo". But then I found many pics of Robles where his skin is lighter, more in line with "the photo". I guess that's the lighting accounting for noticeable differences in skin shade. The photo comes up on a google image search for Hansel Robles. That's not necessarily a clincher: an image search of Bud Harrelson, for example, will yield photos of Pete Rose from his Expos days. But when you run a google image search, there's an option to click on the link to the original article from which the photo came from. That often helps -- it gives the photo some context. Here's the article that's the web source for that photo: https://mlb.nbcsports.com/2020/07/22/los-angeles-angels-roster-and-schedule-2020/https://mlb.nbcsports.com/2020/07/22/los-angeles-angels-roster-and-schedule-2020/ It's a preview of the Angels 2020 baseball roster with that photo as the lead or headline photo and, in fact, the only photo in the piece. With that specific article, you'd figure there'd be a picture of Mike Trout if there was going to be just one photo. But it turns out that Robles was the Angels best pitcher in 2019 and one of its best players overall. Robles was third in WAR on the 2019 Angels despite being a reliever and led all 2019 Angels pitchers in ERA+, WHIP and WAR. So Robles was a logical choice to represent the Angels by photo in that piece. Plus, that might be my favorite photo in the whole set. I should've cropped it even more to emphasize the mask. I'm going with Robles. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Dear Typewriter Chewing Gum, Will there be a Diet Coke subset? Signed, Johnny Fuckerfaster We appreciate your interest in our Diet Coke style cards and hope that you continue to enjoy all of our cards, now and in the future. Unfortunately, we have no plans for a Diet Coke subset at the moment, but Typewriter Chewing Gum will be releasing another Mets card set based on the 2020 baseball season very soon. It will be a limited set, instead of a total set, meaning that not every Met will be featured in that set. Look for it. P.S. Are you related to Joe Fonebone?

  22. Edgy MD wrote: Gibson and Brock were both Harlem Globetrotters. Are you sure about Brock? I know Ferguson Jenkins was a Trotter. Positive. El Dorado-native Lou Brock, former professional baseball player and member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, played a few games with the Globetrotters after winning a World Series title in 1967 with the St. Louis Cardinals. https://www.eldoradonews.com/news/2020/feb/11/harlem-globetrotters-return-el-dorado-next-week/https://www.eldoradonews.com/news/2020/feb/11/harlem-globetrotters-return-el-dorado-next-week/ Also, I have a picture of Brock in a Trotter satin jacket and, I think, spinning a basketball on his finger. I'll look for it later.
