  1. Keith Law ranks his top 40 FA's for The Athletic, which is having a flash sale --- $1.00/month. https://theathletic.com/2153856/2020/10/29/keith-law-top-40-free-agents-ranking-of-the-mlb-offseason-2020/https://theathletic.com/2153856/2020/10/29/keith-law-top-40-free-agents-ranking-of-the-mlb-offseason-2020/ Law only ranks the certain FA's, and excludes potential non-tenders. Springer's his #1 guy. Stroman's rated #4 and described as the only other pitcher in the FA class besides Bauer with a strong claim to No. 1 starter potential. Here's Law's top 10: 1. George Springer 2. J.T. Realmuto 3. Trevor Bauer 4. Marcus Stroman 5. Marcell Ozuna 6. Marcus Semien 7. DJ LeMahieu 8. Didi Gregorius 9. Kolten Womng 10. Jackie Bradley, Jr.

  4. With the Mets finally poised to truly act and behave like a big market team for the first time in more than a decade, take a look at baseball's top free agents, linked below. And dream a little. Top 111 Free Agents https://sports.yahoo.com/top-111-free-agents-124637077.htmlhttps://sports.yahoo.com/top-111-free-agents-124637077.html SPOILER: Trevor Bauer and George Springer top this list. Marcus Stroman is ranked #7, one notch ahead of Justin Turner.

The difference being that every major leaguer has but one rookie debut. But some will have more than one rookie season, having not used up their rookie service time in their debut year. So, for example, Petrerson and Gimenez have used up all of their rookie service time in 2020 and will no longer be considered rookies in MLB's next season, whenever that is. At Typewriter, we card rookie debuts. All of them. But Sanchez and Kilome (I'm pretty sure, though I haven't formally checked) will still be rookies next season. Still, Sanchez and Kilome will not appear on Typewriter's next batch of rookie star cards because they've already debuted. And that's how we roll, here at Typewriter. Oh, and have a happy Exquisite Scumbag day. [FIMG=444]https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50541632857_b0175ec411_o.png[/FIMG]
  6. If the Rays had won last night, tonight's game would've been canceled because of Turner's positive covid test. And now with the season over, we might not get to find out if other Dodgers or Rays caught covid.

  16. I commend you for simply keeping track of these fringy pitchers, not to mention coming up with three of four readable paragraphs on them. I still conflate Oswalt with Chris Flexen. And I'd probably conflate them with Jacob Rhame if it weren't for Rhame's conspicuous eyewear. And that's pretty much most of what I know about Rhame: his eyeglasses.
  17. Hizzoner could get in the way of thizzowner. While MLB owners are scheduled to vote Nov. 17 on whether to approve Cohen at their owners' meetings in Dallas, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio could torpedo Cohen's plans before it even reaches a vote. The 2006 Stadium Lease Agreement between the New York City Industrial Development Agency and Queens Ballpark Company provides the city consent rights to deny the Mets and their stadium be transferred to a person who has committed a felony. Cohen was never charged with a crime, but in 2013 his former hedge-fund company, S.A.C. Capital Investors, pleaded guilty to securities fraud and wire fraud. The company agreed to pay $1.8 billion in fines in one of the largest criminal cases against a hedge fund. Cohen, in a civil suit with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, was prohibited from managing outside money for two years. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2020/10/21/bill-de-blasio-new-york-mets-sale-steve-cohen/6005796002/https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2020/10/21/bill-de-blasio-new-york-mets-sale-steve-cohen/6005796002/ It'd be interesting to read the actual contract clauses at issue. Cohen's hedge fund company, which pleaded guilty to certain charges, isn't the prospective Mets owner. Cohen is, and he has no criminal record. If Cohen himself was a convicted felon, which he isn't, he wouldn't have even bothered to involve himself in the process of trying to buy the Mets in the first place because, as a convicted felon, he'd have zero chance of getting approved. I wonder how this story even broke, to begin with? Did de Blasio give the media a heads up on this issue wanting to get this story out there or did some reporter familiar with the contract minutiae go public without de Blasio's advance knowledge? Based on what very, very little I know about this matter, I can't see de Blasio even trying to enforce that clause. (Unless the contract allows the mayor to enforce the clauses in question against the individual principals of a company with a criminal record. We'll see.)
  18. I like that Jake is TCG No. 1. I like that you wrote "TCG".

I can get behind this post. Last night, I watched about a half an inning of Game #1 of the World Series. It was the first live post-season action I saw all season. If I had to root for something, it would be for Kershaw to go 3-0 in the series like Mickey Lolich did in '68 to shut up his critics. But I know so little about the post-season, I still don't know if that's possible, and still have no idea what kind of a game Kershaw pitched last night, or even what the final score was.

  21. An epic undertaking. It took me two days to read the whole thing. These guys have been killing it during this pandemic. I'm positive that Jason Fry set a world record for most paragraphs ever strung together in one piece on the Mets career of Shaun Fitzmaurice. If you haven't been reading their A Man For All Seasons series, you're missing a ton of great Mets stuff. Just don't bother trying to figure out or anticipate which Met they're gonna assign to what year. It's so counter-intuitive. Thanks for the stuff.

  23. Frayed Knot wrote: I may not have the count exactly correct, but I believe each pitching has made 14 visits to the mound so far. And that might have a connection to why it's taken an hour and a half to get to the top of the 4th. 3-1 Astros as I type. Five pitchers have been used so far. 4 hours and one minute (the NL game went 3:45). This is insane. The games might be great and it's not like we're going anywhere these days but The Game has to be fixed. Mound visits, commercials, warmup pitches, stepping in/stepping out, walking off and around the mound--none of those contribute to why we watch and love baseball. (Warmup pitches: it's the same damn mound in the bullpen, just get on the mound throw 3 more, and go. It's not like olden times when the bullpen mound was crap.) Sometimes, I think that the main reason for today's length of game is batters and pitchers taking too long in between pitches. Just watch an old game from the 70s if you're able to. The pitcher pitches. The catcher catches the pitch and throws it back to the pitcher. And in about 10 seconds, the next pitch is delivered. I'm sure it's 30 or 40 seconds between pitches today. And that's with nobody on base.
  24. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Yeah I am willing to give some 2nd stringers a shot but it can't be the strategy. I can hardly believe the Mets had a starting 5 of deGrom-Syndy-Wheelie-Stroman-Matz/Lugo/Whomever and thought they'd do better breaking it up. And we've been over this before, I'm certain that was only accidental. Bauer is a ... colorful guy. Also, I don;t think anything deGrom tells him about the run support will a-will sway him or his agent in any way; b-be news to Bauer or anyone else with a passing interest in baseball; c-believe inadequate run support 2 years before actually matters or is likely to continue given he's be joining one of the best offenses in the National League; What you said. I'm with all of this. And what a pleasure it is to be having realistic discussions about the Mets acquiring top-tier free agent talent. Hasn't happened here since I've been a member of this furshlugginer forum. Or at least, not "realistic" ones. I'll tell you what -- if the Mets sign just one FA, I'd rather it be Bauer instead of Realmuto. I like JR but he's a 30 year old catcher. The Mets should've signed Realmuto two years ago when they signed Ramos. But the fucking Wilpons.
  25. For the second year in a row, Clayton Kershaw fails in a must-win game. For the second year in a row, Dave Roberts leaves Kershaw in too long (loyalty? stupidity? lack of confidence in his bullpen?) and it hurts his team. If LAD departs in this round, I wonder if the big money owners will make a managerial change. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=kershcl01&t=p&post=1https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=kershcl01&t=p&post=1 I don't follow the Dodgers closely enough to know if there are other reasons for firing their manager. (In fact, I hardly follow the Dodgers at all, beyond the superficial). But firing a manager for not winning a stupid crap-shoot all lucky stupid short playoff series? That'd be like firing a football player for losing the 50 yard-line coin-toss at the beginning of the game.
