I realize it's easier to mischaracterize and distort my position, but that doesn't have any weight. Not with me. So it's a futile exercise. I don't believe I've mischaracterized your posts because I've been reading them for 15 years now. You're practically against every trade, before they're even made. You've convinced yourself that Mets prospects are better than other team's prospects simply because they're Mets. And Cohen's sample size is way too small. I'm not gonna use Wilpon era data where that ownership group was incompetent and I can't even say that my interests as a fan and the Wilpons' interests as owners was even perfectly aligned, especially during the 10 year Madoff era. -

And your untouchable future superstar could be Shawn Abner or Billy Beane. Which is much likelier. And a Mack truck could run me over on the way to the supermarket. Or some lunatic with an AR-15 could shoot up the whole supermarket right after my arrival. I think I should never go to the supermarket ever again. -

Edgy MD wrote: But again, the point is - and as is supported by history - only rarely have prospect trades “burned” the Mets. This isn't really analysis — any more than, "Only rarely have veteran trades helped the Mets," which is true enough, depending on how you define ambiguous terms to suit the argument. I obviously disagree that Isringhausen doesn't count, any more than J.D. Davis not counting or Mora not counting. And if you summarize "prospect trades," irregardless of the time of season, it's far from true that the team hasn't been hurt. I'm not sure what we disagree on beyond that, because none of us knows the deals the Mets opted not to consummate. We don't know if the Cubs were asking for Francisco Álvarez or Cody Bohanek. Any of us can superimpose what was on the table, but we just don't know. There was a saying at the MOFo: All threads lead to Rey. I wasn't expecting this one to. Sometimes, it's a balancing act, where a team will knowingly trade away future value for a better chance at the title right now. The very best organizations work that way all the time. So nobody's necessarily getting fleeced. A prospect with a very high ceiling is baseball capital, to be used just like money. Treat yourself to a fancy dinner at a high end restaurant. Or three dinners at a reasonably priced restaurant. Use it to pay your cable bill. Or bank it with the rest of your savings. Many ways to use it. These kind of trades that you seem to abhor so much are really informed decisions. (But you're free to still abhor them). deGrom and Scherzer are closer to 40 than to 30 and so the window with those two at the top of the rotation has to be closing. And pitchers that old can decline drastically in a heartbeat right before your eyes. They dont necessarily have to decline during the off season. They could be effective in August and toast in September. Many followers felt an urgency to act now. Anyways, Cohen is resourceful and will, I imagine, open up new windows when the time comes. -

Edgy MD wrote: The worst part is that Valentine knew Mora was better, no matter what the track record said, but acknowledged that the organization was under a lot of fan pressure. If they were under a lot of fan pressure, the fucking Wilpons brought it on themselves. Why get a good shortstop when you can fool the rube portion of the fan base into thinking you already have a good shortstop by hyping the shit 24/7 out of Rey Fraudonez and having the audacity to put him on the same level with Nomar, Jeter and A-Rod? Know what happened when their crappy feeble shortstop missed the entire second half of a season? The Mets went to the World Series. -

=Marshmallowmilkshake post_id=101751 time=1659385333 user_id=119] =Ceetar post_id=101746 time=1659384062 user_id=102] And then you get Cohen to loosen the purse strings and hand them to Soto and ask that pig Adams to reserve the canyon of heroes for late October.
-
I believe we were ever in the Soto 'contest' as much as I believe we've now dropped out of it, but.. That's my attitude. I never believed, for a second, that the Mets were in the running for Soto. There's the Nats reluctance to trade Soto in their division and that the Mets lack the pieces other teams have to make up for Soto staying in the East. Is Soto "worth it" anyways? I have no idea and I never will because to answer that question, I'd have to know what Cohen wants from Soto in the first place and I'd never get a 100% honest response from Cohen anyways. Maybe Cohen wants just one WS title and Soto's the best way to get it. That might not sound like much - one WS title - but titles last forever in the collective memory and are elusive -- the Mets themselves haven't won the WS in over 35 years and they play in the greatest city on the planet. With expanded playoffs and more teams participating, it's harder even for the dominant teams to win a WS because of the enormous luck and crap-shoot nature of post season baseball. The Dodgers have been baseball's indisputable best team for about 10 years now and have "just one title". The Yankees haven't won a WS since 2009 and their fans are in a tizzy because they mistakenly believe that the Yanks should be winning it every three or four years. But with expanded playoffs, I'm pretty sure that ain't happening anymore and they're definitely not ever gonna have a run anything like the one under Ol' Case no matter how many Aaron Judges and Gerrit Coles they sign. WS titles are hard and lucky and Cohen could stamp his mark on Mets history with just one title. So if that's what he was thinking, then maybe Soto would've been worth it. Would youse trade away the Mets '86 WS title for another superstar on that team -- some other player whose Mets career you could root for for many years, including all-star seasons and maybe even an MVP award, but at the expense of the Mets losing to the Astros in the '86 playoffs?

Mark Canha Rides Around in a Hole in the Ground

Chad ochoseis wrote: You can get any kind of food delivered to your door at about any time of day, there is a pharmacy on every block and, hey, the kids' favorite Central Park playground is just a walk away. This is why the attraction of living in Manhattan was always lost on me, even when I lived in the NYC area. "Sure, maybe $4000 a month is a little high for a 500 square foot fourth floor walkup, but look! Right over there at the corner of 66th and Amsterdam! IT'S YOUR VERY OWN DUANE FREAKIN' READE!!!" Canha's quote is an understatement. You can get pretty much anything you want within walking distance, ANYTHING -- a pair of pants, a couch, an air conditioner -- ANYTHING, not just food, which you can also get, even great food -- at like two in the morning. Obviously, the cost of living there is way higher, but I don't know about $4K a month for a 500 Sg. Ft. walkup. That sounds extremely high, even in today's market. -

=G-Fafif post_id=101379 time=1659034500 user_id=55] “Did Nimmo's catch give you momentum coming to bat when you scored five runs?” is the kind of question Buck doesn't indulge with conventional wisdom along the lines of “yeah, make a great play and you get on a roll.” He'll elaborate on how one thing doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the other; how the rally that ensued was built partly because somebody had a good at-bat innings before; revisit the catch and what made it particularly difficult; and talk about the hard work that's gone into Nimmo's defense improving, with credit given to one of the coaches and the fielders flanking him. It's a learning experience for this folk at home. -

=Fman99 post_id=101376 time=1659032889 user_id=86] I think their job is to manage the team. I could give a fig how abrasive they are to a beat reporter. I bet the media guys loved Art Howe, but he couldn't manage for squat. -
On a tangent, a team that wins its division but still has to play a one game "play in" game against a wild card is getting fucked by the playoff expansion. Worth noting. There are no more one game series under MLB's new playoff format. Also, there wont be any travel days in the 1st round. The team with the better record/seed will host all the games.

A coupl'a other ghost Mets, Topps style: I was sure that there was another Topps "ghost" Met from the mid-60s when I wrote that post, but the player's name eluded me at the time. I gave it some thought, but continued to come up empty and so eventually, gave up. I also thought that maybe the other Topps ghost whose name I couldn't recall perhaps didnt exist and was simply a ghost of my imagination instead of a Topps ghost. I could've dug out my Mets baseball cards or gone through Mets cards on ebay or Check Out My Cards, but wasn't motivated enough. But today, when I woke up, the name of this other Mets Topps ghost suddenly popped into my head, as if it was put in there by some external force because I wasn't consciously or knowingly trying to come up with the name this morning. From Bowman's SABR bio: While toiling in the Mets' minor league system [in 1966,] Bowman's succinct advice to Tom Seaver would have a memorable effect on the hurler's Hall of Fame career. Seaver fondly recalled that advice in his 1994 book The Art of Pitching.. [***] On June 8 [bowman] played a role in the first triple play in Jacksonville's five-year history. It was during this time that Bowman approached 21-year-old Seaver with cogent advice that the future Hall of Famer never forgot: “Kid, you got a good fastball, but to keep it, you gotta throw it. Don't save it for Christmas.” https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/ernie-bowman/https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/ernie-bowman/
