  1. The only guys that I can think of who still needs a job, is coming a season where they legitimately provided value, and are not totally over the hill (at least not from the standpoint of a one year deal), are Melky Cabrera, Brandon Phillips, and Greg Holland. Is there anyone else other than them?
  2. He might be more essential than you think. What if Gonzalez bombs and Smith proves that he is not going to make it in the bigs? If both those things happen, Bruce then becomes the primary first baseman, leaving Cespedes/Conforto/Nimmo/Lagares as your outfield. Even if Nimmo takes the everyday CF job in that scenario, you are going to want at least one veteran backup. I have been hearing talk of them wanting to trade Lagares. I think that would be a big mistake on account of what I just referenced.
  3. Wheeler looked sharp today. Compared to Matz's performances so far, I am getting more confident in my initial prediction that Wheeler is going to beat Matz out for that fifth spot.

Nor did they say a word or lift a finger to do anything to observe the passing of Nelson Doubleday, an act of omission that I consider to be their greatest indignity as the owners of the team.
  5. Duda struck out 14 less times than Morrison but his 2017 AVG, OBP, and SLG were all significantly lower than Morrison's. And Morrison had trouble even getting this meager contract. Sayonara, Lucas.

  7. Something tells me that Duda needs to get the Rosetta Stone software for Japanese and start developing a taste for sake and wasabi, cause that's where he's headed. Not news or anything. . .just my guess.
  8. The morning show for Nash FM in New York always reminds me of our ex-Phillie, non-roster ulitiltyman of Israeli descent. http://www.tykellyandchuck.com/

I have heard plenty of other young players talk in interviews before, but I have never heard anyone sound quite as man childish as Smith.

I still don't quite understand how you increase your leverage for trading a guy by DFAing him first. I get that maybe it's necessary if you are really strapped for a 40-man roster spot for a guy coming in, but other than that. . .
  11. Now with Darvish, Hosmer, and Martinez signed, is there any reason for Moustakas/Morrison/Arrieta/Lynn/Cobb to keep holding out, let alone any of the players who are below even them?
  12. cooby wrote: What's gonna happen is there is going to be a bunch of sub pro relievers in the game and maybe then teams will come to their senses. Who knows, maybe with less kids playing football due to CTE concerns there will be more talent going into baseball. Some of that talent might go into bullpens.
  13. At what point does Kelly Johnson get taken off the "outstanding free agent" list?
  14. How about this? deGrom - 30 starts Syndergaard - 30 Vargas - 30 Harvey - 25 Wheeler - 20 Matz - 20 Lugo - 4 Gsellman - 3 I'll let you rework the innings.

Also, Alderson stated yesterday that he wants to keep the total amount of starters used this year to 7 or 8 guys. You have 10. 16. Nymr83 wrote: notice what? that a bad team is cutting a bad player to save money? every time a team makes a business decision they are "running a guy out of the game" now? You're making my point for me. It's one thing if the Astros, Dodgers, or Yankees have no use for the guy, but the Rays? The Rays cannot use someone who, despite the flaws revealed in the advanced analytics, had an .815 OPS and a 2.7 WAR last season? Who are the Rays going to throw out there who is going to outperform that? Plus, the flaws are acknowledged in the fact that he is making less than $6 million as opposed to something far higher. How much is Tampa Bay really saving? Even if they have some hotshot prospect that they would want to play over Dickerson, that prospect would be making the minimum which would allow the Rays to carry a $6 million veteran with power on the bench to pinch hit in key spots.
  17. Nymr83 wrote: Dickerson had a good first half fueled by an insanely high BABIP and was garbage in the 2nd half. He is also a liability in the outfield. He also swung at 45.6% of the pitches that were thrown to him that were out of the strike zone. But even with all that said, running him out of the game completely at this point and in this manner would be pretty seismic, and that is where the trajectory for him currently is. A DFA is basically being cut from the team, and if no deal is made (and the Rays just purposely reduced their leverage with every other team) and if no one picks him up as a free agent in a market that is already not good for free agents, I can assure you that the MLBPA will notice.
  18. With the Vargas signing, the Mets are I believe within $2 million of their 2017 payroll. So all the talk of them mandating a $20-$30 million cut in the budget in the media was just that. In the end, they have a very competitive team going into the season. So long as health and performance standards hold up, they ought to be right in the thick of things. It deserves to be mentioned. After all the bellyaching all winter long, it should be acknowledged that the end game panned out at least as far as Hot Stove season goes. It should also be remembered going forward into other Hot Stove seasons (and worth mentioning that they avoided any really huge commitments going into next year's bonanza).
  19. 27 HRs. .282 AVG. .815 OPS. 2.7 WAR. Reasonable $5.95 million salary for 2018. Under team control through 2019. DFAed by Tampa Bay. I have to think that he lands somewhere, but imagine if he does not? If all the teams that are supposedly "tanking" (such as Miami for instance) don't even want to pick up a guy who is producing that much for that kind of salary, then the MLBPA really has a case for a either salary floor or some other such thing. The fact that the Rays did this in the first place is reason enough for the union to speak up, not to mention the Rays fan base.
  20. I think that the Matz/Wheeler question will come down to which one is more likely to provide a different "look" out of the bullpen as opposed to that day's starter. My guess is that Matz will answer that question better than Wheeler, which in my mind means Matz goes to the pen.
  21. Let's assume deGrom/Syndergaard/Vargas/Harvey as locks. That leaves Wheeler/Matz/Lugo/Gsellman/Montero competing for the fifth spot. My early predictions? -Wheeler takes it. -Matz becomes the second lefty out of the bullpen and the first call in many cases once it's determined that the starter will falter once the third time around the order comes around. -Lugo also goes to the major league bullpen and fills a similar role as Matz as a righthander. -Gsellman is the one who goes to Vegas and stays stretched out as a starter kept in reserve. -Montero, as far as I know, is the only one out of this group to be out of minor league options. It would take a lot of failure from the other four for him to crack the rotation, but it is possible. If he pitches well, he will make the bullpen. If not, they can DFA him and maybe he clears waivers and goes back to Vegas.
  22. Abad to the Phillies on a minor league contract. I would have done one year, $2 million on a major league contract. So much for that. It leaves the Mets with a little hole in the pen. Edgin and Smoker were not great, but they were there as options behind Blevins for a loogy out of the pen. As of now, no such secondary options exist.
  23. Another reliable lefty out of the pen would be helpful. Ricco spoke of perhaps adding up to two arms. Maybe Vargas and Abad for a combined $10 million is within reach? https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/abadfe01.shtml
  24. In the Post article that I read, Callaway claims that Frazier was becoming more selective later in the season and stopped chasing as much (Callaway would know this since, as pitching coach for Cleveland, he was advance scouting the Yankees lineup in anticipation of the postseason). Frazier's September splits corroborate this to a pretty significant degree by revealing a .229/.389/.529/.918 slash line for that month. So let's keep our fingers crossed.
