  2. I went with the Red Sox too. All other things being even, the team that eliminates the MFY's in any postseason is pretty cool with me. Vanquishing them is usually enough to get my support the rest of the way. There are exceptions, of course. Last year Houston burned all its goodwill when they gave Gurriel a standing ovation. I typically hate the Dodgers too, but they earned a lot of goodwill for me when they eliminated the Brewers and their Hader cheering fans (stop cheering racists folks, it's not that hard). So I wouldn't lose any sleep if these guys won it all too.
  3. What a great little article about Fred giving back. Nothing better than someone who values education. Thanks for sharing. For anyone who can't get enough of stories like this, here is a nice little article about Frank McCourt donating $100 million to Georgetown University that I am sharing for reasons completely devoid of any ulterior agenda. https://www.georgetown.edu/content/mccourt-school-press-release.html Boy these baseball owners really value education huh? But it's not just owners! Check out the benevolent Roger Clemens giving to the University of Texas! https://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/college_sports/longhorns/article/Roger-Clemens-donates-1-million-to-help-Texas-12861587.php And who can forget Pete Rose, doing his Charlie Hustle for military vets. https://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/college_sports/longhorns/article/Roger-Clemens-donates-1-million-to-help-Texas-12861587.php Round of applause for everyone. Good stuff gentlemen. Good stuff.
  4. Btw. Someone please run over Tom Verducci.
  5. Me too. But it’ll be Melvin.
  6. Good riddance Brewers. And more importantly, Brewers fans. Maybe next year don’t give the racist homophobe a standing ovation. And fuck Ryan Braun and Bud Seelig. Now, go Red Sox.
  7. bmfc1 wrote: That Ackert piece reads like a commercial for Melvin. I think Fred may have already picked his old guy. [tweet]https://twitter.com/martinonyc/status/1053622608950894595[/tweet] Young guy with an analytic background, woman to show forward thinking, two agents to show non-traditional candidates... "we saw a lot of great people but with Doug we got the best of all worlds." Raves for Doug Melvin: *Not as old school as you think! Very proficient with email! *Hilarious. Tells the best jokes! But don’t pull his finger! *Voted top ten in MLB of “Guys who still have moustaches”. *Definitely alive.
  8. I think the dead guys turned them down.
  9. That Ackert piece reads like a commercial for Melvin. I think Fred may have already picked his old guy.
  10. bmfc1 wrote: It was nice of Mr. Van Peeples to show up at 10 AM. It's Peebles! Come on folks! Peeples is smoking hot 80's icon Nia Peeples. Nia still looks pretty good today. Can we invite her to the coronation?
  11. Lefty Specialist wrote: No to Muffy. Move on, people. And they need a real center fielder. That's not Cutch. That's not who I want them to sign. It's who I think they will sign.
  12. I figure the Mets will sign at least one relief pitcher. I mean, I think it's a given that they'll sign a few, but I think they'll sign one guy they can slot in as the "closer". I think they'll sign a hitter too. Someone just good enough to arguably help next season. I'm not convinced they will do anything with the rotation. I think there is enough of a contingent that views the rotation as a strength that the Mets won't feel compelled to spend money there. So give me your prediction on the highest profile hitter they acquire (trade/sign, whatever), the closer that they get, and finally, give me a beer that you recommend for others here. Hitter: Daniel Murphy. Enough of a name. Justifications are easy. Bringing back a key piece of our WS team. MVP numbers, even in a down year put up an .800 OPS. Now fully recovered. At age 34 he won't cost a lot in dollars or years. "Very versatile, we can slot him in at 3 IF positions". I think this is your offensive upgrade. Closer: Dave Robertson. Former Yankee. Also older. A step down from the Craig Kimbrel level. In a perfect world, I'd love to get him for the 8th inning, as his WHIP is pretty consistently good. But we're in Metsland, so here's your new closer. Beer: I think I just miss LA. Craving Santa Monica IPA.
  13. Let me tell you this...it's no coincidence that the best player is called the MVP
  14. Wow BG. You really have a gift for this. I nearly fell out of my chair when I opened this thread and saw Mario Van Peebles.
  15. I mean really. That is so Bartolo in the Sox bullpen.
  16. Frayed Knot wrote: So far I've learned that there were players named Buddy Baumann, Drew Gagnon, and Chris Beck on the 2018 Mets. I have no memory of any of them. Well. You know, you did have some other shit going on this summer.
  17. NVM. LET’S GO GET THIS GUY. 102. WTF.
  18. Frayed Knot wrote: It's been more tradition than anything and that tradition could be taking a hit with stunts like Counsell's Exactly. I mean we could well be entering an era where you go to the ballpark and have no idea who's taking the mound that day. I mean, during the regular season, you get some predictability. But skipping the fifth starter, or a guy is a late scratch...what's the point in announcing your lineup? Keep it a secret and let the other side guess how to make their lineup. I wonder if Counsell has opened up a real can of worms here.
  19. Ceetar wrote: home has to present lineup card first, then the visitor. but the umpire doesn't give the copies to the other side until after verifying them. So if this is the case, you could publicly announce Steven Matz as your game 2 starter, have him throw in the bullpen, post the lineup on twitter, then submit a lineup card with Noah Syndergaard and the other team would be stuck. Yes?
  20. Does anyone know the rule on starting pitchers? Is there a minimum they have to throw? I feel like Counsell may have just opened up a can of worms here. What's to stop a manager from publicly announcing that Steven Matz is your starter, then submit a lineup card with Zack Wheeler. Or to submit Matz in your lineup card, then say he got hurt jogging out to the mound and start Wheeler in his place. (Wheeler having warmed up in secret) Does one team have to submit a lineup card and commit before another?
  21. Is she trying to deport 1/4 of her son?
  22. 이야기하자 Hyun-Jin Ryu In case you are seeing this thread and wondering how it should be read phonetically it's: EEE-YAH-GEE* HA-JA Hyun-Jin Ryu. (Hard "G" sound, like "Gary") Also, it's using the familiar tone, so anyone older than ceetar should be pretty offended.
  23. Sure, they certainly can. They've been doing plenty without one since June. But I don't think they will.
  24. I guess we could have that disclaimer for any of the elite free agents. I think we'll know pretty early during the offseason if the Mets plan to play in the upper market. In the past few years I feel like they've telegraphed their intentions pretty clearly. I imagine after the new GM is hired, we'll hear whether they intend to jump into the thick of things, or if we get fed a stream of excuses.
