  1. I'm willing to bet that the .302/.383/.543 line Ike was working on last season was not a fluke.

  3. .270/.350/.335, with a glove on the good side of average.
  4. It's tough to look too far ahead. We have a number of good prospects who look to be ready by 2014, plus a lot of payroll will free up by then, but how the prospects pan out and what the Mets do with the money are things we can't project. How did we all do on guessing which free agents went where this offseason? Lots can happen. Even next year's expectations will depend on unforseeable things that will happen this year. And as for this year, I'm keeping my expectations tempered, but I sure as hell wouldn't mind being wrong.
  5. I wouldn't expect a big departure from the .268/.345/.344 line he put up last year; maybe a slight boost in power, but not much else. He can remain a starter if he gets his OPS above .700 and his defense to at least average, but I still see him as a backup long-term.
  6. Oh what the hell, I'll bet Lucas May beats Nickeas out and we don't see all that much of him.
  7. Schwinden is the guy we don't want to see. And I'll be an optimist and say we don't see him until September.
  8. It's anybody's guess at this point. Herrera was decent enough for us in a short sample size last year, which may give him a tiebreaker advantage, but I'm hoping either he or somebody else grabs the job by the horns and doesn't let go. I wouldn't be too shocked if we bring seven righties up at this point. If it comes down to a bunch of bad lefties and a decent righty, at some point you have to say screw the matchups and take the best guy.
  9. 13-8, 3.40, 180 IP It's funny that given how huge the error bars have to be, we all seem to be looking for (and would very happily take, I'd imagine) a safe middle.
  10. One key to the success of this coming season will be how quickly the Mets figure out that they have pitchers at AAA who are better than Rauch is at this point in his career.
  11. And no sooner do I post that then I become Mike Scott. My cats are grateful.
  12. PS I'm now Kevin Mitchell. I suppose my three cats should be worried.
  13. The closer by the All-Star Break. 2.90 ERA in 65 IP.
  14. He could do a better job of getting his pitches down this year, but the possibility also exists that the new fences will hurt him more than they help any of our hitters. The error bars are large, but I'll say 10-12 with a 4.50 ERA.
  15. Lucas May is rather intriguing. He went two straight seasons with an OPS over .800 in the PCL -- as a catcher -- and never got the call. He slumped badly at the start of last season, and got shipped to the D-Backs system where he rebounded to his regular numbers. Now he's with us on a minor-league deal. I have to assume his glove had something to do with him staying in AAA so long, but he could easily hit his way above Nickeas on the depth chart. Here are his stats: http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=&sid=t541&t=p_pbp&pid=461315
  16. He makes the team because there aren't seven better relievers on the roster. Actually, I'd only put Ramirez ahead of him with confidence, but that's not necessarily meant as a huge endorsement of Parnell. I'll say his curveball gives him a slight boost, and he winds up with a 3.35 ERA over 62 innings with 70 Ks.
  17. I like what Collins is doing. Thole did not show last year that he can be the starting catcher on a good team, and Collins is letting him know in no uncertain terms that his present opportunity is finite in duration.
  18. So the SI cover jinxes the Marlins, and the Braves are sending out the same team that epic failed last year -- assuming they can stay healthy. Two down, two to go.

  20. I will say that I think Ramirez was a super pick up that more than justifies the exchange. I'll consider it a bonus if Torres gives us anything at all with the bat.
  21. metsmarathon wrote: is the guy's refrigerator any less secure than a fedex box truck? Maybe, maybe not, but evidently it raises enough doubt.
  22. The sample was supposed to be shipped immediately, but the person responsible didn't think FedEx was open on a Saturday night. The delay in processing violated the terms of the testing agreement. Like it or not (and I don't, for one), you have to respect the rules of the agreement. And fire people who are responsible for shipping and don't know the hours of FedEx.
  23. I fully don't expect Torres to cut it in that position. You don't want the most likely guy to make an out (other than the pitcher) to get the most plate appearances, regardless of what other measurements of lineup effectiveness you take into consideration.
  24. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/7520886/hall-fame-catcher-gary-carter-was-ferocious-competitor Tim Kurkjian has a nice write-up. Does anybody remember the game Ed Lynch refers to?
  25. A very sad day.
