  1. Shortstop Brandon Crawford (.196/.229/.370) scares nobody. His defense had better be awesome with a bat like that. Moving back a few positions, I think that too many people don't appreciate that Posey stops being all that special of a hitter if he permanently switches to first base. I hear their third baseman stops a lot of ground balls simply because he leaves them no room to get through to the outfield...
  2. Watched a few minutes of Mets Yearbook 1967. They were talking about Ron Swoboda and his defensive issues, and Swoboda talked about how he'd worked hard on it all season but it was still a work in progress. Very interesting in hindsight. Then they moved on to the draft, and showed Whitey Herzog (a Mets scout at the time) telling the brass that Jon Matlack is the guy they want to fall to their spot. The Yankees took Ron Blomberg first (career ruined by injuries IIRC, but I believe he was baseball's first DH), and the next tw guys were nobody I'd heard of. Also very interesting in hindsight.
  3. Well, I will officially question the sanity of anybody who would take the Braves' lineup over ours. I think Murphy and Tejada did not hit over their heads last season. I think that David Wright is healthy and will perform accordingly. His glove alone looks a lot better than it has in a while. The glass is half full mentality: I think Lucas Duda's bat will negate his glove. He'll provide entertainment, that's for sure. I think Collins will realize quickly that Murphy's not the one who most needs to be taken out for late-inning defense. As good as they looked this weekend, I think the pitching still has the most questions. Can Niese pitch well beyond the All-Star break? How much does Johan have in the tank? Can Francisco give us a full season of this?
  4. So far my hitters are smacking it, but my pitchers are getting smacked just as hard. I'm really regretting taking a wait and see approach to Jeff Samardzija, but at least I have him on the roster.
  5. Wow, I don't think Byrdak looked as good in any game last year.
  6. Baxter couldn't have made a worse first impression.
  7. Bourn swung at ball four. Big break for us.
  8. The Votto deal is massive, and he's not as young as people think -- he's older, in fact, than Prince Fielder. Like Fielder's contract (and Pujols' contract too, for that matter), the first half of it will look a lot better than the second half. The Cain deal is a bit more surprising, but his last three seasons have been excellent. He's also younger than Joey Votto, too. It won't hurt the Giants as long as he stays healthy.
  9. Edgy DC wrote: Tejada: three-run homer off of Brandon Beachy. Any power from Ruben this year would be an unexpected bonus.
  10. I do think the pen will be significantly better than the last two months of last season, even if I'm not optimistic at all about Rauch. I'd list my top three concerns as starting pitching, team defense, and the leadoff spot in the order.
  11. Now if they said Sid Finch was getting an extension...
  12. Has anybody offered the Wilpons anything close to 2 billion for the Mets? So McCourt uses Dodger revenue to pay for his divorce settlement while defaulting on team bills, and gets 2 billion for his troubles. It may be the opposite of what Selig intended, but he's the big winner of this transaction. It will be interesting to see if the new ownership has any money left to actually spend on players.
  13. I think the trade will be more about Ramirez than Torres, but whether that was Sandy's intent is an open question. I'll say that mild improvement gets him back to his career averages: .244/.318/.403, but his defense is good enough that his job does not get challenged until maybe September.
  14. I have no problem with the emergency holographic Fman playing with the current resources. If he has an advantage, it's because the rest of us have overbid to this point.
  15. 8:30 tonight? Is FMan back in, and if not, are his players going back on the market?
  16. Young is not likely to be ready for Opening Day at this point, but at the very least it gives the Mets an option should Pelfrey fail to enormously improve on his ST performance once the games count.
  17. 3.40 ERA in 65 IP. Not spectacular, but certainly serviceable. And better than two of the Mets' offseason acquisitions.
  18. To think that the Madson signing looked like a great coup at the time for the Reds. Sometimes you do the right thing and just get unlucky.
  19. Did anybody even notice at the time it was the wrong Nelson Cruz? It would not be fair to penalize Muddy for that.
  20. Fman99 wrote: I bailed. Too slow, too painful. Good luck all. Don't panic. There's still plenty of talent available, and you'll be at a marked spending advantage. Things did start to move more quickly towards the end as spending money started to dry up, but I don't think anybody has more than 12 or 13 players yet. I believe we're continuing on Monday (or was it Tuesday?), and you can probably get some good deals on players (especially pitchers).
  21. A first-balloter. It has been a pleasure to root against him. For all the snark we've all given Larry over the years, we'd all have shrines to him if he had a career like that in a Mets uniform.
  22. .280/.370/.500, with 25 HR. The bad news is that he plays 150 games in right field.
  23. .290/.370/.470, 20 HR, 85 RBI. That's assuming he stays healthy.
  24. I'll say something along his career lines of .292/.343/.441. He'll do well enough defensively to survive the year at second base, but next year he will play third. Whether that is for the Mets or somebody else depends more on David Wright than on him.
  25. I hope he proves me wrong, but I'm not expecting any improvement.
