  1. Edgy DC wrote: Cormier has two career saves in 618 games (though 108 of them were starts). Both indeed came against the Mets, one in 2001 and one in 2003. Thanks, Edgy. Later

Victor Diaz 500 career games pitched, 20 saves That rat bastard Rheal Cormier, and it seems that all of the few saves he does have (fewer than 20) are against the Mets. First pitch fastball hitter - stereotype of all Latin--American hitters He's a battler - Lou Pinella He's either on or off... there is no in between. Victor Zambrano It's too bad he'd peaked by the time he turned 25. C. Guzman Just because he's a closer doesn't mean he's particularly good. Mesa I didn't think he was capable of having a season that good. Ramon Castro When the season started, I'd never heard of him. That guy Barmes in Colorado
  3. This morning on the Mike and Mike show on ESPN radio, one of them said that the clubhouse attandants had to scurry to put the corks back in the champagne bottles. He may have been joking, but.... Later
  4. ]a Southerner feeling high on what was called "electerizing fluid." Mel Allen's enthusiastic shout, punctuating a great play or big hit, was "How 'bout that!" During the 1963 World Series, in which LA swept his beloved Yankees, Mel must have resorted to a differnt type of "fluid". By the end of the fourth game, he sounded so smashed that he was almost incoherent. I loved the easy way Red Barber would call a ballgame. Another of his favorite phrases was " he's as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs". He always had an egg timer in the booth. It reminded him to tell his listeners the score of the game every three minutes. Later

  6. Has anyone seen any estimate of how far that homer went? I did a quick calculation. It was hit toward left center, so I'd estimate the distance to the fence is 365-370 feet. Then you add at least 30 rows of seats at at least another 100 feet. Then it went over the back wall and hit the glass. That wall had to be at least 80 feet high. Without the glass to stop it, I figure it would have gone about 530 feet or more. Annie, was there any figure given in the Houston papers? Later
  7. Y'mean they wrote my ex-relative (Talia Shire) out of the script? Oh well, in real life she divorced my cousin. So I can't get too bummed about her lack of a payday. Later
  8. Which detail?
  9. Cochrane's stats: Unfortunately, the Baseball Register didn't show SB in those days. But this is from the 1986 edition: '85 - mostly on DL - .223, 4 HR, 20 RBI '84 - (120 game season).267, 22HR, 77 RBI '83 - (120 game season).263, 25HR, 102 RBI* '82 - (70 game season) - .301, 22HR, 62 RBI so it looks like those numbers were correct. He was traded for Tom Paciorek. He played 3B and ss and had 25-35 error seasons. The one year I have his SB, he was 17SB and 16 CS I was right in guessing some columns were transposed. The numbers shown in your link for his SB totals are really his strikeout totals. Later
  10. When I get home, I'll see if I can locate my Sporting News Baseball Guides from that era. If I can find them, I'll let you know if the numbers are correct.
  11. It looks like someone may have transposed some columns(maybe walks and strikeouts with HR and RBI). I don't remember him being that good a prospect. With numbers like those, there would have been more written about him at the time he was putting them up. Later
  12. Anyone think Benjie Molina has reduced the amount of his FA payday with his performance in the playoffs? Later
  13. Its a comparison of the current catching prospects in the Yankee and Met organizations.

  15. Remember the tv show Alien Nation? http://www.angelfire.com/pa2/trekker/aliennation.html It takes place in the "future" (from when it was made in the 90's). If you remember the intro every week, they show the main street of the city. The marquee (sp?) of the local movie house shows that Rocky VI is playing. I think they were trying to be funny. The fact that there really will be another in the series might be funnier than they intended. Later
  16. Can't someone just have a good old fashoined opinion? I'll remind you again that I'm just auditing this course. I'm here for the FUN. If you want footnotes, start giving out some credits, Professor. Y'know I made up a word to describe you. Its Parse-imonious. It means someone who takes relish in disecting the opinions and feelings of others but is miserly in giving out their own opinion, lest it be challenged. When was the last time you answered one of my questions to you when I asked your opinion about something? Check back and see, if you're into all that research. In the meantime, chalk me up as another CPF member who won't be around as frequently because of the way you treat people. We're not your employees nor are we your students. We owe you nothing, but we expect some civility when we come here.
  17. Steve, thanks. That was the best post ever. Later
  18. That's what I get trying to explain my original statement. I did not mean for it to be taken literally. I was trying to be sarcastic about my impression that Peterson always seems to have negaitve words about every pitcher, and therefore he would find something negative to say about Wagner. Wagner's height (he's listed at 5'8") was something I used. And some of the quotes you found support my impression. Thank you for all that hard work. Later
  19. Got it. It was funny. Later
  20. On this date (October 16) in 1960 - The NL votes to admit Houston and New York to the league, the first structural change since 1900. You can add your birthday wishes here. Later
  21. And Chipper Jones named one of his kids Shea. So...? Later
  22. Of course not. Anything he said to the GM prior to the trade was said behind closed doors. But there were countless news stories after the deal that said he gave a lot of input to the decision. Some said it was because Peterson thought Kasmir couldn't contribute imediately because he feels a pitcher needs 500 innings in the minors to get ready. Some said he felt Kasmir's throwing mechanics would cause arm injuries. Some said it was because of his size; that he wouldn't have the stamina to be an efective starter. I'm sure you read all those stories. But this is like asking me to quote Dick Cheney when he advised dubya to invade Iraq. Actual quotes aren't available. And I'm pretty sure you knew that when you asked for a quote. And based on those stories, it was my hyperbolic interpretation of something he might have said. Later
  23. 83, Val, That was an allusion to the stories we read about some of Peterson's opinions about Kasmir. Later
  24. I have a copy of the 1946 Sporting News Baseball Guide. It has a picture of Jackie Robinson putting on his first professional (Montreal) uniform. But the accompanying article doesn't mention what he went through that year. Welcome back, Scrapple8. Later
  25. Peterson will probably lobby for Ryan, because Wagner is "too small". Later
