A conversation with Furillo at this point would be, as Major Strasser once said about one with Ugarte (Peter Lorre), a trifle one-sided. Oops. Tuned in during the interview. Steve kept calling him Carl, so I put 2 and 2 together and got 5. But Oisk did make the comments about the difference between Jackie and Roy. Later
  2. Edgy MD wrote: Maybe a baseball-first guy wouldn't have made the best pioneer, too focused on advancing his own dream to see the bigger picture. Who knows? I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'd like to comment on that comment. Carl Furillo was interviewed by Steve Sommers on WFAN last night. Carl said that was the biggest difference between Jackie and Roy Campanella. (I paraphrase, but not too far off.) Jackie realized the significance of being in the Major Leagues while Roy just wanted to be a winning baseball player. Later
  3. A interesting number for Travis so far: 2012: 19 BBs in 303 PAs 2013: 12 BBs in 43 PAs Don't know whether they're pitching around him or his batting eye has improved. But he hit his first dinger of the season last night. He also committed one of six team errors. Later
  4. Predicting pitchers duels. You don't score too much with frozen balls. Later
  5. Good job. Nice history. Was their first starting right fielder Dante Bichette? Later
  6. Well, at least the players' muscles will get loose by the fifth inning of the third game. Later
  7. Is that a tallis on Diamond? Sure looks like one. About who should DH: Buck against lefties - he gets a rest. Duda against righties - we get a rest. Later
  8. Good job. Memo to Mets pitchers - Don't let Willingham beat you and take chances with the rest. You are as much of a mystery to them as they are to you. Later

But that's not what I meant. Maybe Marv-like is better for what I meant. (are hyphenated adjectives allowed?) Later
  10. Thank you. Because of his size, speed and power, I had envisioned him being our Jimmy Wynn. Later
  11. A bad play at first base, or running the bases, is Marvelike. Later
  12. Yes. My apologies to Josh for the insult. Later
  13. Its snowing there now. A lot. On the post game radio show, Wayne said their flight may be detoured, and they have no idea to where. Later
  14. From Rubin on his ESPN blog The 20-year-old Syndergaard made his official Mets debut Sunday. He tossed four scoreless innings for Class A St. Lucie, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out five at Jupiter. He sports a fastball that sits at 94-95 mph as well as a solid curveball and changeup. “My first inning was a little shaky,” Syndergaard said. “I just had a little pregame jitters. Once I settled down, in the second, third and fourth inning, I felt a lot more comfortable on the mound. I’m always nervous before a game until the first pitch is thrown, but being with a new team and a new organization, even being at a higher level, I had a little bit more anxiousness.” Syndergaard tossed only four innings because he was slowed during spring training by a lat muscle pull and has not yet fully ramped up for a starter’s workload. He should be permitted to go five innings Saturday at Bradenton, in his second regular-season start. “The second bullpen of the year I felt a little something in my lat. It turned out it was just a little pull,” Syndergaard said. “I’m back at it now, and I think I’m at full strength.” : Later
  15. Heard yesterday on WFAN. Daniel Murphy: "John Buck is a 6 foot 4 monster". Later
  16. Here's a stat for you. Through last night's game: Career starts: 34 Career walks: 32 Later
  17. The team that beat the MFYs in 1963, because the humiliation caused Mel Allen to lose his voice. 1964 Cards (they beat the MFYs) 1971 and 1979 Pirates (beat 'em Bucs) 2001 Snakes (beat the MFYs in general and Mariano in particular) 2004 Red Sox (I thought it would stop their fans' bitchin', but it didn't) Nothing else, really. 19. Great job, LWFS. Having eaten breakfast in Pennsylvania several times, I particularly liked this almost hidden gem: Scrap turns into scrapple. Later
  20. During today's radiocast, Sterling said, (I paraphrase, but pretty close) "Tough day for Suzyn. We usually go to spots at the top of the inning, but they weren't sold". The beginning of the end for their broadcasting cash cow? Later
  21. Since Marlins are fish, you might have said they were scaled down by the owner. But we commend you for resisting that temptation. Good job. Later

  23. I think they're keeping a spot warm for denDekker on that outfield. He could be ready to play in about 6 weeks. (4 weeks cast comes off, two weeks of BP/ getting his strength back) Later
  24. But of all the articles posted today, Lupica's doesn't win the writer a track suit. Later
