  1. When I think "Tampa" and "baseball", my first association is "Lou Pinella" because they always seemed to make it a point of telling us where he was from. Maybe my dismissal of the Rays is because I remember (only a few years ago) when they were the MFYs whipping boys, and never seemed to be able to hold a lead, no matter how big, against them. Glad that has changed. Now they're good to watch because they play good fundamental baseball. Later
  2. Cody Bellinger is becoming this generation's loathsome Los Angeles "pretty boy" camera pet. I think he only demonstrates enthusiasm when he knows the camera is on him and the mention in another thread of Steve Garvey reminded me of this. Later
  3. Before this series, I don't think I could have named one player on the Rays. I still don't think I could name more than two. Later
  4. News today that Cohen reached out to the unions representing citi field seasonal workers and offered them 500/month per person, a total commitment just under 3 million, during the off season to help everyone out. Yay Cohen! Not only will he be investing in his seasonal workers, he wants to invest in technology, too. 8. Jim Bouton wrote this when with the Houston Astros in 1969, in Ball Four, and when Morgan was his teammate: Norm Miller was doing the broadcast bit in the fourth inning when Joe Morgan came back to the dugout after missing a big curveball for strike three. "Joe, Joe Morgan, may I have a word with you?" "Sure, Norm, how's it going?" "Fine, Joe, fine. We wanted to ask you about that pitch you missed. What was it?" "Norm, that was a motherfucking curve." "Can you tell our listeners, Joe, what's the difference between a regular curve and a motherfucking curve?" "Well, Norm, your regular curve has a lot of spin on it and you can recognize it real early. It breaks down a little bit, and out. Now, your motherfucker, that's different. It comes in harder, looks like a fastball. Then all of a sudden it rolls off the top of the table and before you know it, it's motherfucking strike three." "Thank you very much, Joe Morgan." Later
  9. Yeah. But he's no Derek Jeter. (SM-96) Later

  11. Morgan was a fantastic player, but it needs to be said - a shit broadcaster. As the article said, he was against the "new" stats, and would say it on the broadcasts. Then he wrote a book, "Baseball for Dummies" (one of the ... For Dummies series). When it came out, I thought it was his autobiography. RIP Joe. You were a great player to watch. Later
  12. =bmfc1 post_id=48371 time=1602389997 user_id=73] I think that I can safely say for all of us: GO RAYS!

  17. My two memories of him: 1) On Saturdays, my friend and I would go bowling at the alleys on Northern Boulevard (around 256th Street) and saw Whitey bowling there many times. We were National League fans (Me - Post Brooklyn, rooting for the Reds, my friend - Pirates) so we didn't fawn all over him like the other kids did. But I remember he bowled right handed because he didn't want to take a chance injuring his pitching arm. He was a pretty good bowler, too. 2) My friend and I went to the 1960 All-Star Game (it was the second one that year) in New York at YS I. Whitey was the losing pitcher for the AL and Pirate great Roberto Clemente hit a home run off him and Pirate pitcher Vern Law was the winner. Later
  18. Houston looks like they are on a mission to prove they don't have to cheat to win, in spite of the Dusty Baker post season jinx. (I still feel funny typing about Houston in an AL thread) Later

  22. 2-0 Atlanta in the bottom of the 4th. Travis has hit another HR. Later
  23. What about doing the State thingie - the Cleveland Ohioans? It would piss off the Reds, but they consider themselves part of Kentucky anyhow. Later
  24. Houston won, 5-2 George Springer (who would look great playing centerfield for the Mets next year) hit two home runs. Later
  25. Braves win 9-5. Travis went 3 for 3 with 4 Ribbies. You just know, down deep in your heart, that he will win at least one post-season series MVP. I do. Later
