  3. I'd wager that the lineup tomorrow will resemble the lineup for the post-clinching game! Can the Mets bring Humber and Pelfrey back? I'm not kidding, could they actually do that?
  4. Well Tom Glavine is now the 24th winningest pitcher in MLB history. 10 away from being # 23 with 300 Cy Young 511 Walter Johnson 417 Pete Alexander 373 Christy Mathewson 373 Warren Spahn 363 Kid Nichols 361 Pud Galvin 360 *Roger Clemens 348 Tim Keefe 342 *Greg Maddux 333 Steve Carlton 329 John Clarkson 328 Eddie Plank 326 Nolan Ryan 324 Don Sutton 324 Phil Niekro 318 Gaylord Perry 314 Tom Seaver 311 Charles Radbourne 309 Mickey Welch 307 Lefty Grove 300 Early Wynn 300 Bobby Matthews 297 *Tom Glavine 290 Active with 200 or more Randy Johnson 280 Mike Mussina 239 David Wells 230 Jamie Moyer 216 Kenny Rogers 207 Curt Schilling 204 Pedro Martinez 206
  5. Lets hope we play the Pads and thank Trevor for blowing the home field in all three series! Metalica is better than AC/DC anyway...
  6. This is a darn good sign for the coming week(s) ahead
  7. Tommy G shutting it down for the regular season. Okay, Pen, lets get him # 290
  8. Franco wasn't supposed to BE here TODAY!
  9. Gwreck wrote: St. Louis defeats Milwaukee, 3-2. Cincinatti has been eliminated. St. Louis' magic number to clinch is down to 1. Damn. Russo has been squaking all week about what to expect from the Giants if they end up going to St Louie to make up that game Monday. So pretty much no margin for error now for Houston and they must hope the Cards lose Sunday.

Forget about George, MFY Fans will be going nuts all over the radio and messageboards angry that plans made months in advance would be shot to hell. They did this in 2003 when FOX choose Cub games on in PT and had a Yankee Stadium DS game in the afternoon!
  12. Favorite Met Books, Least Favorite, the whole darn gamut of Met literature should be put right here. I'll kick things off which a favorite of mine. Getting close to the 20th anniversary of the subject: Great book. So informative in fact that years later I purchased an Astros 1986 NLCS program and took score of the ENTIRE game simply by using the book! Has to be one of the few times you can say that.
  13. I've heard AN argument made for putting Don Larsen in the Hall based soley on his WS Perfecto! No clue if the author of said argument was a MFY fan, or even knew that Larsen had a pretty darn good record overall in the postseason (not that it mattered, but it would augment a Larsen "argument" if based soley on his postseason performances) I see your point, I was trying to deconstruct it by saying you'd have alot of Bo Belinskys and Bo Jacksons in the Hall that 20-30 years later will be the equivilant of outdated pop-culture references.
  14. Still over in the UK with the Beer fest huh? Why don't we go to the Emerald Isle for a change ya bloke you!
  15. Edgy DC wrote: What's the case for Maris? He was an excellent player who had a short run. Chalk that up to either classic MFY (and New York) overhype as well as a misguided belief that the FAME portion of Hall of Fame should be the determining factor above all others. Like a guy saying Jose Canseco should be in over Craig Biggio! (Yes sadly THAT was a comparision made on a sports talk radio program) Should be stated with that argument, what happens when flame is fleeting? Do you start doing straw polls of Copperstown visitors and start removing inshrinees if an overwhelming portion don't have a clue who they are? The fact that people today know more about Randy Johnson, or even Lance Johnson than Walter Johnson means The Big Train's plaque gets taken out? Basically the achievements of Maris gets trumped over his actual performance. Back-to-Back MVPs, the 61 homers, THE guy during that run of Yankee years, tremendous OFer, ect. Not really saying anything about Roger's carrer except that he was, at one point, a damn big star in the game. I'm sure Maris will get more steam among media and fans as the years go on, especially as the steriod era players start getting elligable for the writers ballot. Goes hand-in-hand with the notion of resetting the Single Season HR record right back to his '61 in '61
  16. Yanks, by virtue of their win and Detroit and Minny losing tonight I believe have wrapped up home field throughout the postseason (including of course the WS) Going to be VEEEEARYYY INTAHRESTING with the DSs and LCSs essentially starting (and quite possibly ending) in the same city. Going to be alot of media and fan frenzy. I'd say the only more crazier thing in sports that I can think of is the Giants and Jets having a home postseason game the same day. Though I'm sure the NFL would be able to manuver that right up untill the Championship Game weekend, and even then they could persuade one of the teams to move the game to Saturday.
  17. Edgy DC wrote: Willie said it well, something along the lines of, "Thinking of playing the spoiler is loser talk, as far as I'm concerned. Winning should be it's own motivation." I guess helping knock the Phills out last year was just winning for the sake of winning against a divisional opponent Speaking of which... Do not get nervous when backup catcher is hitting against Billy this October...
  18. 1986 108-54 .667 1st NLEast, NL Champs, World Champs 1969 100-62 .617 1st NLEast, NL Champs, World Champs 1988 100-60 .625 1st NLEast 1985 98-64 .605 2nd NLEast 1999 97-66 .595 2nd NLEast, NL Wild Card *2006 95-65 .594 1st NLEast (2 games left in the regular season) And that pretty much clinches no better than a tie for 5th winningest season in Met history. Good job overall, would have been nice to get a few more September wins, but better hope October wins are A PLENTY!
  19. metirish wrote: The guys are saying that Humber and Pelfrey got sent home today and Bell and Bannister sent to Florida to keep the arms loose. Phil and Mike, see ya in 2007, Heath and Brian, limber up ya might get called upon in a couple of weeks!
  20. G-Fafif wrote: M&MD are world-class A-holes. As usual, at their remove from their audience, they miss the point. This isn't about slapping Tom McCarthy or even gratifying Gary Cohen. It's about serving the Mets fan with the best possible broadcast. They have someone who is considered (rightly, I believe) among the best announcers in the business, someone associated with the team like no other current voice, and he is available. Two innings of Gary Cohen is better than no innings of Gary Cohen. Nine (or however many it takes) innings of Gary Cohen would be ideal, but that wish is prohibitive given that Tom McCarthy does have a job. I've truly stopped listening to M&MD after years of insisting I would. The last time I tuned in for anything but the Willie Randolph report was the day after we clinched when they spit all over it from the top of the show. It may be their cute way of tweaking, but it's no longer fresh and it's not remotely funny. One night they ran over when I turned on the FAN for "Mets Extra" and I was subject to a serious discussion that Carlos Beltran is not a good defensive centerfielder. It was only 30 seconds or so but it convinced me yet again for good that they are the biggest frauds in the media. There isn't a sinkhole large enough to swallow them, their egos and their immense lack of knowledge and talent. (Insert your own Francesa girth joke here if you like.) To be fair though, we'd be killing the Yankees and Michael Kay if he pulled this kind of stunt any time during the 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 postseasons (though in all likelyhood Kay's working for ESPN radio killed any shot of him or the Yankees pulling something like that off) Its one thing to bring a retired legend like a By Samm in the 1980 WS into the booth or someone who doesn't work the games anymore like Marv Albert in the 2004 Stanley Cup, its another to bring a guy in who calls the games on TV all season just so they can be behind the radio mike for the postseason
  21. Yancy Street Gang wrote: The Mets will go into the playoffs with only two 10-game winners on their pitching staff, the fewest ever for a Mets team that made the postseason. The 1969 team had only three, by the way. Yeah but that 25 spot from...Gee can't recall the name off hand...more than made up for defeciencies amongst the rest of the staff
  22. Niceage!
  23. Dick Allen Yes Minnie Minoso Bobby Bonds Thurman Munson Ken Boyer Don Newcombe Rocky Colavito Lefty O'Doul Wes Ferrell Tony Oliva No Curt Flood Kind of. Larry Doby got in as a technicality "Pioneer & Executive" maybe Curt gets in that way. Al Oliver Joe Gordon Vada Pinson No Gil Hodges See answer on Torre Ron Santo Yes Jim Kaat Luis Tiant Mickey Lolich No Joe Torre They should put him in the Composite list. Wonder how many times a person can be on this particular ballot? 15? Sparky Lyle Cecil Travis Marty Marion Mickey Vernon Roger Maris Maury Wills Carl Mays No
  24. I think tonight is the final broadcast. The Bambino got it for the Yanks. A mild upset if you ask me, only because Mickey Mantle, Don Mattingly and Derek Jeter all have a large amount of their fan base still very much alive and all. I would have guessed it'd be Mickey. After all, he WAS the first mega superstar of the TV age and probably the biggest baseball pop-culture icon of the post war era (based on his post career memorabillia craze) I've always likened Mantle as Elvis to DiMaggio's Sinatra in that regard and almost suspect that Ruth gets treated as an "afterthought" in the mind of Yankee fans, or at least an icon that belongs more to general baseball history and lore. Eh, my take anyway
  25. Who do you bloody think it could be? Number 41 from 1967-1977 and 1983, later a broadcaster and roving pitching instructor from 1999-2005. THE FRANCHISE! GEORGE THOMAS SEAVER!
