It just never fails to impress me when nu media outlets carve out a place for themselves with nu perspective and a nu attitude, then try to get in the sports journalism business by taking that 'tude to the sports world, and accomplish nothing except to use their dubious sports work to discredit the rest of their work. At least in my eyes. Very much agreed. The writer used the usual trick of coming in with a point, and then tried very hard to reconstruct that point, even when facts didn't quite fit. Perfect example, come 2006 was Floyd really THAT much of a difference on the Mets? Well there is a reason Endy Chavez WAS in position to make that catch in Game 6. Cliff Floyd was, and is, a nice piece to a puzzle, he is not what Reggie Jackson was talking about with his "magnitude of me" lines. A team does not build around Cliff Floyd, nor does he bring a presence to a lineup, he always has been a good augmenter to a lineup. Another perfect example of an author with a preconceived notion and a willingness to play loose with the established facts to "prove" the point is in a book... Okay, for the life of me I can't recall the name, nor the author and it is not popping up in Amazon.com right now, but it is a quickie paper-back anti-Yankee, myth deconstruction book. Anyway, point is that the author wanted to paint Joe Torre as a hack manager who won with Buck Showalter's players. Never mind as soon as he came in he started bringing in "his" type of players, but anyway part of the author's anti-Torre argument was how the Mets, Braves and Cardinals all succeeded "as soon" as Torre left. Laughable when you consider by the time Davey Johnson took over, what Orosco, Staub, Wilson and Brooks were really the only big contributors remaining from 1981? And I'm not counting Maz's 1986 cameo! Ditto the Braves. I believe Dale Murphy was the last of the Torre Braves by the time 1990 rolled around and Cox returned (Ironically Torre replaced a Toronto bound Cox in 1982) to the duguout. Also note that it was 6 years and 4 different managers since Torre was sacked after the 1985 season. So the author was basing his entire notion of managers taking Torre led teams further than he did on LaRussa turning things around in 1996 for the Cardinals the year after Torre was fired mid-way through season.
  2. ] OE <-- What a perfect Met to represent this post, Roger Craig! You know, it does say a lot for the franchise when Craig is the 128th greatest Met in the Cranepool Forum's rankings.

  4. Oh for F**K's sake! Conner Jackson with the second homer of the inning off of Sanchez

  6. ="G-Fafif"] A one-night patch might be appropriate, but green and white jerseys? C'mon... They are selling overpriced Mets/Jets t-shirts at Shea ("Guaranteed. Amazin." Illustration of modern Shea, not the one the Jets played in.) for $28 and wildly overpriced sweatshirts (same design) for $70. The Mets never cared this much for the Jets when they were there. Modern Shea with the neon ballplayers? Because the Jets were here when it became the Purple Palace. You are right about the Mets caring more now than when they played at Shea. Even Doubleday/Wilpon continued the harshness of the Grant era relationship. Who knows what might have been if the relationship through the years wasn't so frothy? Heh, Citi Field could have been the first dual-sport facility of the post-cookie cutter era!
  7. I'd say give up all the ticks and do something more enjoyable instead! Eh, Times Square, Virgils, see an show, even if it's Off-Broadway, I'm sure someone is playing at BB Kings that weekend! =

  19. Very true, all three versions of YS have had the feel of some grand monolithic buildings. Looking at them this song tends to play in my head I IIRC was the first actual modern "Stadium" so it made sense that it took a monolithic design. II I believe was meant to "update" the feel of the old place with the style of the cookie cutters of the day. Course this is the result:
  20. Will be tonight through Saturday, though may head up to LA on Sat.
