  1. I'd like to see Chipper get a nice Golden Sombrero in his final game here!
  2. ="metirish"]Steve Wrote ]Dude, I hate the Yankees as much as you do, I believe Val when he says he hates them but I do not believe you. Really? The fact that I've been dealing with asshole cousins, friends, co-workers, etc flashing the number of titles in my face doesn't mean anything to you? The fact that I wore a FUCKING BRAVES CAP during the 1996 World Series and was tomahawk chopping the entire time, taunting Yankee fans up at Fairfield University doesn't mean anything? I hate the Yankees, I hate their fans, I hate that stadium, I can't wait for an era like 1982-1994 to happen again, just so all those bandwagon jumpers can feel just how rooting for a team is supposed to feel.
  3. Not to go back down this road, but http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/16/sports/baseball/16panama.html?_r=1&pagewanted=print&position=&oref=slogin Rivera wasn't even the guy who installed the wiring. If you want to say he was negligent in knowing what was going on, fine, but that's not cold blooded murder.

We've all heard the Yankees partyline before. 1) When did I ever say Jeter is the greatest SS of all time? He's easily the third best SS in this city! 2) Okay, who is better all-time?
  5. Valadius wrote: Oh Steve, Steve, Steve... Let me tell you a story. When I was growing up in New Jersey, I was the only Mets fan out of all of my friends. By the time I became a fervent Mets fan, it was 1997, and I was 10 years old. I rode in a carpool with my friends to school. I ate lunch with them every day. All of them were Yankee fans. The one topic we talked about most? Baseball. Year after year, I had to suffer through the "Yankee Dynasty" growing up. They'd lord it over me every single year when the Yankees would be better than the Mets. And during the offseason, they'd never let me forget it. It was torture, Steve. Absolute fucking torture. Luis Gonzalez's bloop hit in 2001 was one of the happiest moments of my life. I ran screaming through my house because the MFYs had lost the World Series. But then the Mets began to royally stink, and I left home before the Mets would become good again. I have been waiting for the Yankees to miss the playoffs since I was a little kid. Growing up as the only Mets fan in town was hell. So don't tell me I'm "trying to fit in". I hate the fucking Yankees. Dude, I hate the Yankees as much as you do, but I'm not rooting for players to break records just because they are non-Yankees. Look we'd laugh if a Phillies fan, or a Cardinal fan say the same thing, i.e. "Its a good thing David Wright never got that MVP" or "I'm glad Jose Reyes never held the stolen base record." Its a stupid and immature way of showing your sports hate.
  6. I like you Val, but I swear you try too hard sometimes to "fit" in around here with some of your stuff.
  7. BFD though is my point. Rivera still is the greatest closer of all time.
  8. Valadius wrote: Francisco Rodriguez just set the new single-season record for saves with his 58th. You know what makes me happiest about this? Mariano Rivera never set the saves record. Point? Saves are a pretty meaningless stat, and the only HOFer that has held the all-time single season saves record is a debatable one in Sutter. Willie Mays never set the single season homer record, in fact did Mays ever actually own AN all-time single season record? Many consider him the greatest of all-time.
  9. I wonder if poor Greg is still at Shea, almost 6 hours now since the first pitch of Game 1.
  10. Is Larry available to pinch hit in this game? Nice job by Murph.
  11. I'm just glad that they don't have any cheesy marketing campaign for postseason tickets this year.
  12. TheOldMole wrote: Why would you suppose that Niese wouldn't understand the full import of what he did tonight? I understand it. Who said that he wouldn't?
  13. Niese was being born the date the Mets won the 1986 World Series. Neat for Niese! Okay, I'll supply my own crickets for this one
  14. Frayed Knot wrote: ="metsmarathon"]mark grace really is not pleasing to the ears. how the hell do they go about hiring awful, awful announcers like him? i mean, there's gotta be better guys out there than this, just hoping for a job, right? I think Grace had the rep as a player of being "colorful", maybe because he was often going out with some good-looking babes. I think network execs look at that kind of stuff and say; "Hey, this guy would be great on TV" That said, while he's certainly not Mr. Excitement out there, he hasn't said anything particularly dopey today ... at least not yet. He also earned a rep through interviews on shows like Jim Rome where he would frequently tell R, and sometimes X rated stories from the locker room (It's Grace who gets credit for bringing the "Slump Buster" out in the open). So his Crash Davis/Jim Bouton mentality probably gave execs the idea that he'd be great for their "target" audience.
  15. Mets Lineup Reyes, ss Church, rf Wright, 3b Beltran, cf Delgado, 1b Tatis, lf Easley, 2b Schneider, c Santana, lhp
  16. Yeah but, with no more regularly scheduled off days, the pitching staff will be taxed, even with the September callups. Might see Niese get his second start, and another go-round for Knight.
  17. I haven't heard anything yet.
  18. I wonder if they gave Ralph #4 or some instructor number.
  19. Wild Card is not on the table for this team. Oh I'll take it, especially if there is a championship run along with it, but after last September? After the first half of this year? Nothing short of a division title will be a grave disappointment.
  20. Here is a pic
  21. Heh, you asked Coobster! =
  22. cooby wrote: PS Who is Roger Federer anyway? James Bond? Considered by many to be the: Greatest. Male. Tennis. Player. EVER! Seriously, has the all-time record for most majors one, I'm sure he is among the top winners of all time and has had quite a run. Just came off of yet another championship at the US Open across the street from Shea on Monday.
  23. Benjamin Grimm wrote: And the Mets were, at the time, running those "Your Postseason Has Come" commercials on SNY. Amazingly, they never stopped or toned down those ads, even after 1st place had slipped through their hands that final weekend of the season. Its a good thing though, that this year the Mets had no "clever" marketing slogan this year, and kept it simple with "Final Season At Shea."
