  1. I could see Showalter asking, very discreetly, the three pitchers going this weekend who they'd prefer to throw to and then taking that into consideration.
  2. They don't have roster flexibility for that. Calling up someone means sending someone else down. I guess Megill could be optioned if it's been decided he won't be on the WC series roster. More likely they just pitch Williams and Megill a few innings each and then spread around the rest to guys who are rested (Lugo, May, Rodriguez).
  3. I think Walker has a better chance than Carrasco to pitch in the division series. But there doesn't seem to be a situation in which Taijuan would pitch in the upcoming 3 game wild card series.
  4. Ed Hearn never appeared in a postseason game in 1986. Ramon Castro, same in 2006. Kevin Plawecki, same in 2015. Of course having a backup catcher is essential, but would they ever actually play? Put another way, in a key situation late, would Nido hit regardless of the pitcher? Or, if using Naquin/Guillorme to hit for him, could Alvarez then be counted on to catch the balance of the game? I do suppose the alternative to McCann is…Darrin Ruf?
  5. 1. Playoff rosters can be tweaked round-by-round. Leaving Taijuan Walker off against the Padres is a practical choice, not a judgment on whether he pitches against the Dodgers. 2. Joely Rodriguez: In 4 appearances this year against SD, he has a 37.60 ERA. 9 runs, 7 earned. Retired only 5 of 17 batters he faced. 1 K, 5 walks, 7 hits (one was a homer). I'm not so sure he's on the roster this first round. 3. Tomas Nido is going to start at catcher. This appears to have been conceded when Nido actually hit for McCann on Sunday in Atlanta. But with Alvarez around, would McCann just be left off completely? 4. In a short series, offensive flexibility will be more important than the bullpen. Of course the Mets will take Diaz, Ottavino, Lugo, Smith, May, Peterson, and a “long reliever” (Williams or Carrasco). But Megill or Givens or anyone else is likely to be superfluous here, and allow some extra bench flexibility.
  6. The last month, particularly with the Marte injury, has exposed the Mets for having insufficient offensive depth. The problem wasn't trading JD Davis for Ruf, the problem was that the team needs another hitter (or two) better than either of those players. Of course, the team still won 100 games. In almost every season that gets you the division. There are 3 (maybe 4) other elite teams this year and one plays in our division.
  7. Mariners and Rays now locked in as 5 and 6 seeds, respectively. Mets clinch World Series home field advantage over any AL team other than Houston.
  8. Time for the subs. Let's get Alvarez in at Catcher and Vientos at third.
  9. Damn
  10. That racist chant (instead of, say, “Let's go Atlanta”) is some real bad ju-ju.
  11. Doesn't look good.
  12. Interesting that they're not just bringing Jansen in.
  13. Never liked Jon Berti…until NOW.
  14. At some point the Braves relievers will give up a run or two. Why not tonight?
  15. The win over the Nationals ensures the Mets the tiebreaker. Mets and Yankees currently have identical 99-61 records, so there is still a magic number of 2 to clinch homefield should that be the WS matchup.
  16. 4 and still alive, for now.
  17. Plus it makes the NLDS a "second round" meaning you can charge second round prices. Ticket prices are the same for WC and NLDS games.
  18. Phillies clinched a wild card. If San Diego loses tonight (no score yet vs Giants), they're tied, but Philly has the tiebreaker. Both teams are now incentivized to lose their remaining games in order to secure a matchup against the Cardinals instead of the Mets.
  19. Article X, Section A of the MLBPA Basic Agreement. Players pool is 60% of the gate for all guaranteed DS/LCS/WS games, plus 50% of gate for the the WC games. There is also a guaranteed minimum provision that goes up if ticket prices go up. (Note that this is from the 2017-21 Basic Agreement; I don't think the new CBA is publicly available).
  20. 5 (And you thought this thread died?)
  21. It's supposed to rain Tuesday as well. If the Braves win the division tonight or Tuesday, the Mets games would be meaningful only for home field advantage seeding in a potential WS matchup against the Yankees. Mets currently up half a game there and will have the tiebreaker with any 1 win against the Nationals. Presumably a non-meaningful game could just be cancelled if weather continues to be a problem. Also, the Braves might lose, making the point moot.
  22. Again, the majority of the money from playoff ticket sales does to the Players' pool, not ownership. The Mets and Cohen would be much happier as division winners with better odds of going deep into the playoffs, full stop. The benefits they reap from that are far greater than a couple extra games' worth of parking and concession revenue.
  23. =Ceetar post_id=109754 time=1664807234 user_id=102]Mets guaranteed 2 home games either way, and actually there are more potential home games via this path. Cohen must be happy.
  24. For deGrom to get 5 more starts, the Mets will need to reach the WS, and probably have played a 6 or 7 game NLCS.
  25. I realize the attempt at humor but this is as good a time as any to point out the team has won 98 games and is quite good, no matter the results this weekend.
