  2. Maddux didn't even make it the fifth the last time he faced the Mets, Game Three of the NLDS. Immaterial, but I'm making myself feel better.
  3. Cameron's almost-catch, like Rowand's off Beltran in the Saturday Philly game, didn't make sense. This kind of season, those home runs are robbed. So maybe it isn't "this kind of season" after all.
  4. In promoting the upcoming Day/Night doubleheader at Shea, Gary said he understood there was one there in 1972. Sure enough, b-r lists a doubleheader against the Dodgers on May 11, a Thursday (the day we got Willie Mays), with two separate attendance figures. I have no recollection of this. Anybody?
  5. I love how Gary Cohen continually disses Maddux for bailing early in games.
  6. Rookie of the Year voting is not necessarily an indicator of things to come. Not that it's supposed to be anything but an indicator of who was the top rookie in a given year, but it's interesting to see who beat who when and how much you would have lost investing in futures if you based your bets purely on the voting. 1994 A.L. Voting 1) Bob Hamelin 2) Manny Ramirez 1992 A.L. Voting 1) Pat Listach 2) Kenny Lofton 1996 N.L. Voting 1) Todd Hollandsworth 2) Edgar Renteria 1995 A.L. Voting 1) Marty Cordova 2) Garret Anderson 3) Andy Pettitte 4) Troy Percival 5) Shawn Green T6) Ray Durham T6) Julian Tavarez 1965 N.L. Voting 1) Jim Lefebvre 2) Joe Morgan 1989 A.L. Voting 1) Gregg Olson 2) Tom Gordon 3) Ken Griffey And in 1984, Kirby Puckett (3rd) and Roger Clemens (6th) looked up to Alvin Davis.
  7. Tim Raines had the rookie season I had hoped to see from Mookie Wilson. Which I guess made him Mookie of the Year.

  18. Could be, though Marlon's career is more recently vital than Fonzie's. (I'm about five seconds from my "they were up by 12 games, he could have been the 2006 version of Mazzilli" rant, so I'll stop now.)
  19. Don't know if Marlon, like Roberto Hernandez last summer, carries a "Best Used by Mets by October 2, 2005" date, but what the hell? Worth a try for the chance they'll replay him blowing that bubble rounding first on the pinch-hit inside-the-parker again.

Nope, Roger Clemens (August 4, 1962) is still older than me. But he is the last Met to have been born before me. Unless, of course, they reactivate Rickey (December 25, 1958) in September. The continuing careers of Clemens and Jamie Moyer are all that stand between me and finally growing up.

  23. Wine Spectator captured Tom Terrific in his vineyard (and The Southpaw shares it): http://108mag.typepad.com/the_southpaw/2007/07/tom-seaver-doub.html He seems happy. The Suzyn Waldman-voiced tribute is also there.
  24. Good thoughts. But nah. The less Billy Crystal making 62*, 63* and so on, the better. How awkward are those McGwire scenes now?
  25. ="Yancy Street Gang"]I have heard good things about 61*. But I still don't want to watch it. It really isn't bad but it's not good enough to not let go of that particular "I won't watch" conviction. Why encourage Billy Crystal?
