  1. Just watched MLBN airing of the '86 WS highlight film. Saw the Red Sox nail neither Hernandez nor Carter at third. Saw it called accurately. Then I switched over to the series I've been mostly avoiding. Yes, umpiring has gotten worse, at least where two men on/not on third is concerned.
  2. I never really stopped to think about how a player from Japan came here with the first name Ken. We've had Masato, Hideo, Takashi, Tsuyoshi, Shingo...Ken? Without knowing all the ins and outs of the culture, WTF? ETA: And just like that, my next post made me Kaz or Kazuo Matsui. Ken?
  3. I'm Carlos Beltran. Every single day sucked for us 2009 Mets. I don't want to think about any of it, not even my scattered individual accomplishments. Leave me alone, Marlon. It's no wonder we cut you.
  4. David Proctor, No. 1 pick in '88, was Mike Torrez's nephew. Probably still is. Kirk Presley's bloodlines were all shook up, too.
  5. Kobe Bryant in a Dodgers cap yesterday, childhood loyalties revealed during Game Two of NLCS. Craig Sager reported the native Philadelphian grew up rooting for the Mets; that Darryl Strawberry was his favorite player; and "tell Ron [Darling] I still have his baseball card". Philly fan takes it in usual stride: Kobe was a Mets fan? While growing up in Philly? Seriously, thats horrible parenting by Joe Bryant. You cant raise a New York fan no matter where you live.
  6. Some of my least favorite Irish tenors are MFYLDBs.
  7. [Re thread title: It's Game Three] Agee 6 Gentry 2 Ryan 1 Kranepool 1
  8. This morning forty years ago was the last morning a person could wake up in a world in which, at some point in the history of humanity, the Mets had not been its champions. Happy 40th Anniversary to us, Mets fans.
  9. With a $140 million payroll, I would think the expense of hiring a full-time team doctor and having him travel on every trip would be worth it.
  10. Where's the poll question in which we choose between an ice cream cone and a kick in the head?
  11. November 27 = Black Friday, day after Thanksgiving. Who won't want to rise at 4 A.M. to purchase their brand new Mets uniform top? But will the uniforms be bereft of black that Friday? One assumes, but one also assumes nothing from this organization. Good piece on lousy Mets branding by Hot Foot's Anthony DeRosa in BrandChannel here.
  12. Added kudos for the cards, every last one of 'em. Wow, the love affair with Brian Stokes, or decent seventh innings, is hot and heavy here. Marlon Anderson and Robinson Cancel the only 2009 Mets to get zero Schaefer love. Emil Brown forever lords it over them.
  13. 1993 breakdown: Harazin 25-57 (through July 7) McIlvaine 34-46 (starting July 8) Source: 1994 Mets Media Guide, Baseball Reference
  14. "We're all Keynesians now," Richard Nixon once said. That's how I feel about my new favorite baseball team the Minnesota Twins.
  15. Hunsicker was never GM, so his 2 seasons needed to be dispersed. Cashen held the title through '91 (12 years) though he was giving way to Harazin by season's end. Either Phillips should have 7 years, ranging from '97 to '03 (replaced Joe Mac mid-'97; replaced by Jim Duq mid-'03) or Duquette should have 2, accounting for '03 and 04. But one of them needs 1 more season, and Cashen needs one more season. Subtract out Hunsicker's 2 seasons and you come away with 48 thrilling seasons of Mets baseball.
