    Ollie

So NOW he's a fan of minor league contracts.
  3. Tom Seaver, therefore, must be Clapton.
  4. Johnny Bench = Jimi Hendrix, changing the game with every lick. Joe Morgan = Bob Dylan, a genius in his prime who became impossible to understand. Pete Rose = Jim Morrison, irresistible to many, viewed by others as obscene.
  5. Ed Kranepool was Charlie Sexton but endures like Charlie Parker.
  6. In terms of rewriting the record book from page 1, Albert Pujols is Garth Brooks.
  7. Bonds is Michael Jackson: No denying the greatness let alone track record, but after a while who could bear to watch? A-Rod is Madonna. Mike Schmidt was Elton John. Dale Murphy was Huey Lewis.
  8. No. 9: Game Seven, 2001 World Series, Diamondbacks perform Heavenly Father's work (as they might say on Big Love) and snuff out the evil dynasty. Thought this one would have ranked in the top three or so given that it was the climax of an instantly legendary series; that it was settled in come-from-behind fashion in the bottom of the ninth; and that perhaps the greatest lefty starter of his generation, Randy Johnson, came out of the bullpen on no days' rest, to throw 1-1/3 scoreless innings of relief to get the win. But the MFYs lost, so I guess it had to be tamped down. Or so it felt listening to the special guests, Joe Torre and Tim McCarver who, with hosts Bob Costas and Tom Verducci, made the world champion Diamondbacks sound like special guests at their own victory. I guess it was impossible to find Arizona starter Curt Schilling and get him to talk.
  9. Is it possible the baseball gods heard this plea long ago and misinterpreted it as a beseechment for at least one hit given up every time a Met takes the mound?
  10. His teammates! David Wright, who had been pulled in the seventh inning, greeted victorious teammates with high-fives as they entered the clubhouse. Nice placement, Wright told Hernandez. Murphalicious, he then told Murphy. Rob Schneider is David Wright in Makin' Copies!
  11. Perhaps you're thinking Tim Redding?

  13. http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2007/04/22/ollie-bomaye/ Ah, you read my mind. I was fond of this moment in time, too. Goes off in other directions, but recounting Perez outdueling the last MFY incarnation of Clemens was a great way to spend a Saturday morning.
  14. Finishing the arc, with quite possibly the first comic strip pages appearances of Fred Wilpon.
  15. Positives: Threw some great games in '07 and '08 against the Braves and the MFYs. Most glaring negative (besides the not agreeing to go to Buffalo for a few weeks): Batting practice for the Diamondbacks on HOF day last August 1. From there it was clear we were just marking time. No. 6 on the depth chart wound up pitching Game 7, and we didn't suffer for it. All those glimpses and teases and flat out good performances is what made the Blassification of Oliver Perez so horrifying to view.

    Ollie

As I watched those homers interfere with traffic over Cape Canaveral, I hoped I heard the sound of a bandage being ripped off in one quick swipe. Ollie will be better off, the Mets will be better off. This is going on three years of utter ineffectiveness. I was entertaining notions, in my post-Castillo satisfaction, that Ollie still has talent, potential, a track record. The Nationals' pinch-hitting of righties against our potential lefty specialist dashed all that. Give me Byrdak. Give me O'Connor. Give me Misch. Whoever emerges as a lefty in the pen looms as a better option.
  17. Mookie takes back 1, reports Rubin.
  18. Filling in for Chuck with the "laugh" of the day. I figured Mr. Delta Club's financial savvy was implied by his going to Citi Field's multiple ticket windows, as gorgeously illustrated in Monday's strip, thus saving on extraneous fees. But the Mets, those bastards, they got him, too. Or as Tank put it in 1978, "That's COLD, baby!"
  19. Martino Tweets: In response to many: Obviously expected blowback re: Castillo column. If u disagree, entitled to your view, as I am 2 mine. Stand by it 100% Just to confirm, he's sticking to whatever he decided other people were thinking without actually asking them what they were thinking. What an exemplar of courage.
  20. He turned a really snazzy double play with Reyes shortly after coming over in '07. Mysteriously reached the second deck in left at Citi Field in '09; I'm pretty sure he was the first Met to do that. Was kept company on the bench the final game at Shea by an injured Moises Alou, who came out of DL purgatory to support the club that was still paying him. I saw a shot of them and strained to remember they were once young and world champions. Saw him from a few feet away on one of the Mets' blogger outreach nights and noted he sported neither horns nor tail (nor range).

  22. The Second Spitter wrote: I have no wish to politicize this thread, but these problems tend to arise when you start advertising a person's race at the point they are hired, as if it is a positive attribute to carry out their job, or is a positive reflection on the organization. Statements like "first Hispanic GM" really irk me. Or in Willie's case, "First African-American manager in New York". FFS. To be fair, Fred Wilpon was very proud that in Art Howe he had hired New York's most Dismal-American manager.
  23. Now that I have reached Jesse Orosco status, I am utterly, utterly charmed that he is listed as a starting pitcher, relief pitcher and right fielder.
  24. seawolf17 wrote: I actually thought the Castillo acquisition and signing was a solid move at the time, from a cultural perspective. I distinctly remember stories that Castillo and Santana were close in Minnesota, and I thought that was a nice idea to help keep your ace happy. Johan was closer to George Washington's 137.5 million twins.
