  1. Gary Cohen addressed the emphasis on OBP in general last night, noted that as philosophy of taking pitches taking hold around MLB, batters hesitating to swing at pitches in hitters' counts. We saw it with Thole recently. Like GC, I agree OBP a fine thing to emphasize, but there is an offensive downside. Then again, the Mets are a bunch of sluggers lately, so this isn't our problem.
  2. Bryan Stow still recovering. Doctors say the San Francisco Giants fan who was severely beaten outside Dodger Stadium is stable enough to be moved to a hospital in the Bay Area where he'll be closer to his family. Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center spokeswoman Rosa Saca says in a statement Friday that Bryan Stow remains in a coma in critical condition, but he'll be transferred to San Francisco General and Trauma Center as early as Monday morning. On their website, the family expressed relief and happiness that Stow was coming home but also said it was "bittersweet" because they would be leaving all "the wonderful people" they had met in Los Angeles. Stow was attacked in the stadium parking lot after the March 31 season opener. There have been no arrests.
  3. McDowell back, sorry, won't do it again. His eyes red and voice wavering, Roger McDowell returned as the Atlanta Braves' pitching coach Friday and apologized for his crude conduct that led to a suspension. He spent a "very humbling" two weeks away from the game and promised there will be no repeat of such actions. "I've always said this is the best office in the world," McDowell said, before pausing to gather himself. "When I put the uniform back on I felt how fortunate I am to be able to put this uniform on and represent the organization." McDowell apologized in his statement "to anyone who was offended by my actions" and answered questions. "I am not proud of the way I acted and I know that it will not happen again," he said.
  4. Per Andy McCullough: Carlos Beltran awoke this morning with swelling in his right eye, enough to remove him from the lineup for todays game against Houston. It just burns, he explained, his eye glassy, before heading for more treatment. Beltran is expected to be checked out by doctors. That altered Terry Collins plans and shuffled one of Friday nights heroes, Fernando Martinez, into the lineup. *** Two injury notes: 1. Angel Pagan (strained oblique) is expected to resume baseball activity today in Port St. Lucie, Fla. 2. Pedro Beato (elbow tendinitis) is traveling to meet Triple-A Buffalo to continue his rehab.
  5. Ashie62 wrote: How about, Beltran is going to make the all star team. Elected as recently as 2009. Like Chris Christie, except that guy gets talked about as an All-Star in his field more for some reason.

  9. Beltran scratched from Saturday lineup because his right eye is burning. No, I'm not making this up.
  10. I adore the dot. When it was introduced, I was surprised we didn't have it for 35 years. Made all the sense in the world. They could have stopped there with the innovations. Perhaps they could go with a wider NY and a navy cap if they're worried about how their sales stack up to other teams'.

  12. Carlos Beltran: King of the Hill Composed in the wee hours of July 8, 2007 A man built a park A man built a field A man said "quirky!" Is what I'll yield I'll make one wall close Make one wall far I'll make another wall stand Behind something bizarre Gonna have a hill Gonna put it where? Puttin' it in center Way the hell out there Nobody digs it Everyone complains But at least there's a roof In the event it rains Two teams played a game Two teams played forever What time would they finish? The teams said whenever Cut to the chase Get to the point Arrive in the fourteenth A victor to anoint Lamb on first Burke on third Joe Smith on the mound Now isn't this absurd? Houston had Scott I've heard that before They once had a Scott From the hardware store Not that Scott It wasn't Mike But with first and third What was there to like? One out was needed To keep things tied When Luke Scott connected We nearly died His ball is long His ball is deep His ball might end it That Houston creep Wait just a minute! Wait just a sec! His ball is headed To that pain in the neck It's heading for the hill It's heading there now It's gonna take a miracle Scott can take a bow The hill IS quirky The hill IS high I suspect the same Of the architect guy It's a Crosley tribute? Unique incline? The rest of us think It's just asinine Nobody could catch up Nobody could hope Unless CAR LOS BEL TRAN! Was workin' his lope Carlos ran long Carlos ran deep Carlos kept climbing Carlos went steep He lunged and he grabbed He secured it and soon He fell and held on Like he was Al Toon The Astros were stopped At the one-foot line Wanna play some more? The Mets said fine Minute Maid Park Is truly the pits I mean can you believe Where that silly hill sits? But hitting it to Beltran Is your mistake Boo him all you want Go jump in the lake He drove in the winner The 'pen did the rest Tal's Hill is the worst That catch was the best!
