  1. Postgame (while SNY was in commercial), I saw former journalist now YES man Jack Curry note the prevalence of Mets in Friday night's lineup who were not long ago Buffalo Bisons. He juxtaposed that number (4) with the number of "former" All-Stars (8) the MFYs had and compared the game we just saw to March Madness, with a 15-seed beating a 2-seed. Let me check: MFY record was 2-1/2 games better than Mets' coming into Friday (it's now 1-1/2). MFY's don't play in the Big East and the Mets don't play in the Colonial. Baseball isn't college basketball. A 162-game season isn't a tournament, MFYs don't get a bye. Reputations don't win games. Pitching, hitting and defense do...which the Mets had more of last night than their ranked opponents. Hack Curry drinks a lot of Kool-Aid before every broadcast, apparently.

I too was flabbergasted the first time I was at Busch Stadium and saw that. Do Cardinal fans lay in wait for haughty Diamondbacks fans to stop by?
  4. Dickey 3.0 Turner 2.5 Murphy 1.5 Reyes 1.0 Martinez 0.5 O'Connor 0.5 Isringhausen 0.5 Rodriguez 0.5
  5. Particularly obnoxious variation: The post-2004 version in which 26 rings were put up against the (then) six the Red Sox had earned...because they don't just Got Rings, they Got Massive Insecurity.
  6. I take it Hawaii, where the Giants have traditionally been big, get the Phillies game because of the Flyin' Idiot.
  7. Great and accurate KTE, and that was before the emergence of Justin Turner and Ruben Tejada ensure utter Met domination and concomitant MFY dismay. Teixera's no Liza, though. Liza gave us the good version of "New York, New York." Teixera's helmet doesn't fit.
  8. Questions are the theme today... 040 -- 1964: 19 Runs? Did they win? 041 -- 1999: Two grand slams in one doubleheader? Anyone else do that before? 042 -- 2009: It hit over the line! They are gonna change the call, aren't they? And at the same eventful juncture of other years... 040 -- 2007: Five runs in the ninth flatten the Cubbies 041 -- 2006: Randy Johnson's really no better than Geremi Gonzalez 042 -- 2002: Steve Trachsel talks sex in his own hopelessly boring way
  9. The ESPN highlight package from Thursday's game, here, is narrated by a woman who refers to Dillon Gee (as in Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific) as Dillon Gee (as in Montreal Canadiens great Guy Lafleur). Twice. Talk about dropping a pop fly.
  10. Ron Hodges. Used in the game, pinch-run for, went out there and warmed up relievers. What a teammate!

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: That was completely awesome. * Pat Zachry's insane windup * A rare sighting of Ed Lynch wearing No. 34 * A really bad day in LF for Phil Roof (normally a catcher IIRC) allowing Frank Taveras' ridiculously risky attempt to stretch. * Ozzie Smith as a Padre This was a different roof: Gene Roof. Look closely at the road unis: The numbers are serif, which I had no recollection of.
  12. I'm looking to pick up 18 goose eggs. Anybody know where I can find them?
  13. Maybe this Josh's batting practice jersey is broken.
  14. DocTee wrote: Len Berman conflating Hubie and Mookie Oddly enough, Mookie conflates Len Berman with Chris Berman. Whereas Hubie conflates Len Berman with Len Matuszek.
  15. Jason Bay's bat earning its keep.
  16. Livan is Spanish for "obviously".
  17. Sprawling video highlights here of the game written about here (Game 039 on The Happiest Recap) and other related (and non-related) events from September 1981, as the Mets competed for a division title in their own way. Come in at 6:50 for the game in question but the whole thing's an incredible time capsule. Oh yeah, I can post it here: fXJApI3KSbA
  18. Jason Bay's glove earning its keep.
  19. When was the last time the Mets had a third baseman as productive as Justin Turner? Ventura? HoJo? Can't think of anybody else lately.
  20. Niese 4.0 Turner 2.5 Reyes 2.0 Isringhausen 0.5 Rodriguez 0.5 Hairston 0.5
  21. Killebrew used a great line on Pat Borzi (very good writer, btw): So two years ago, when I saw Killebrew outside the clubhouse at the Metrodome one day, I did something I had never done in more than 20 years as a baseball writer. I introduced myself, shook his hand and told him earnestly, You were one of my favorite players when I was a kid. Killebrew must have heard that 12 million times in his life, but he looked me square in the eye and appeared slightly hurt. And Im not anymore? he said. After a moment of uneasy silence, he started laughing. I learned later from a friend of his that Killebrew used that line a lot, to disarm people. That made me feel a little less stupid. Id hate to think I hurt the feelings of one of the nicest guys to put on a baseball uniform.
  22. I've been to at least one game of every Nats @ Mets series since September 2006 -- that's 14 consecutive series and way too much Natsball -- but that streak ends this week. So I don't know nothin'.
  23. Warming up for the Nats at Double-A Harrisburg, former 15-game winner Oliver Perez. "Right now I'm really excited," Perez told CBS 21 News on Tuesday afternoon. "It's been a long time since I've felt this (kind of) emotion. I can't wait to jump the lines tomorrow." He sure didn't wait to jump the shark in 2009.
  24. Jason Bay, kinda giving up: Afterward, Bay was asked if hes used to seeing balls that would be home runs in most park die in outfielders gloves at Citi Field. I wasnt used to that one, especially off of a guy like that, Bay said of the first-inning drive. But you get used to it. I thought I hit it pretty well. At least, well enough to go off the wall. But apparently not. Bay hit 36 home runs with the Red Sox in 2009 before signing with the Mets as a free-agent. Bay has just eight home runs in 115 games as a Met. Bay has been hampered by injuries, most recently a ribcage injury that has kept him sidelined for all but 20 games this season. Bay has four homers in 192 career at-bats at Citi Field. It definitely doesnt help, no question, Bay said when asked if it was mentally taxing to have would-be home runs turn into outs. But the parks been the way it has been and it hasnt changed. No question, but you go up there and you do the best that you can.
