Lest you get too excited, he's calling the game with Aaron Bleepin' Boone, who spent a good two minutes of gametime opining that the Rangers' pitching stockpile is a direct result of "Nolan Ryan's emphasis on pitching." (NOTE: Not a single pitcher on the postseason roster-- nor in the high minors, in any sort of vaguely "major-league ready" state-- was drafted and/or signed as an amateur while Nolan Ryan has been principal managing partner OR team president.) Too late. I've been excited for several innings (cue FMan).
  2. Murphy lines it to center. Davis races as best he can to third before Bake McBride can get the ball back in. Good thinking on the Mets' part to play the bottom of the second at the Polo Grounds. Huge center field.
  3. Calling the game on ESPN Radio...Gary Cohen!
  4. Hornsby wouldn't go to the movies because he was afraid it would ruin his eyesight. Thanks, Ralph. Hadn't heard that one before...again. Oester not much of a second baseman. Tommy Davis just grounded one right by him for the leadoff runner in the second. Murphy's not gonna be asked to bunt, is he?
  5. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Mike Lupica is going to have an especially cloying article about this game in tomorrow's Daily News. Jerry Koosman gave us a baseball night in Flushing the way they used to give us baseball nights in Flushing. The way they did in '69 and '73, before Boss Steinbrenner moved the action across the Triborough and everybody followed. "That man," Keith Hernandez whispered after taking a drag on his Marlboro light and pulling a long sip of Budweiser from the bucket the cluhouse kids leaves at his locker. "He's the reason we're still in it. The changeup." Jerry Koosman throws a changeup and some things go back to the way they were.
  6. Bruhert strikes out Musial and this place is rocking! Ralph, did they have strikeouts when you played?" 1-1, going to the bottom of the second.
  7. Roger Metzger pops to Brogna for the second out. Now all Bruhert has to do is get Musial. That's all. Stan the Man, btw, is the fifteenth batter of the game.
  8. Benjamin Grimm wrote: That interview in the stands with Kevin Burkhardt and Salvador Dali was rather surreal. And you know, guys, baseball is a game without clocks, but Sal loves coming out to the park. Guys?"
  9. Fires back to Hernandez and first and nails Hernandez for the double play! Keith Hernandez of the Cardinals doubled off first on a GREAT scoop by Keith Hernandez of the Mets! Oh baby, I love it!

  11. Straw strikes out to end the first. 1-0 Mets. 1-1. How many is that for Stargell against us now?
  12. Carter sac fly to right. Nice catch by Vlad. Reyes scores easily.
  13. Who knew Sock Night would be such a draw? Olerud pops out to Santiago.
  14. Reyes kept running! Garvey fell asleep on that one. First and third, nobody out. Guess the hammy's OK.
  15. Is it really necessary to have Millan bunt here?
  16. Reyes bunts his way on. His hammy's been a little tender, but he's waving off Tom McKenna. Obviously he's staying in this game.
  17. Kooz looks good. Struck out Rose to lead off, popped Utley to second, speared Larry's line drive to end the first.
  18. METS Reyes SS Millan 2B Olerud 1B Carter C Strawberry RF Maddox 3B Christopher CF Boisclair LF Koosman P Surprised Yogi is sitting McReynolds. They're taking the tarp off the field. Looks like this thing might start on time.

Still can't bring myself to root for the Cardinals in October after 2006 (and 1985). Should they meet up with the MFYs down the road, of course, color me Redbird.
  20. Benjamin Grimm wrote: This is indeed sweet. Do they still do leader cards? And have they been extended into advanced stats?
  21. This poll is just for us to test our click functions, right?
  22. La Russa, Molina and Pujols (though Pujols not as much because he's transcendent) still bring with them the darkness of brass rings ungrasped. Phillies success, when it came at Mets' expense, was the Mets' fault. Phillie success more recently has nothing do with the Mets. Mind you this is splitting hairs so as to make a call. They can both burn in hell, and may the Braves' figurative corpses be used to put out their flames.
  23. Rays momentum too much fun to stop now.
  24. I look forward to Nyjer Morgan offending the likes of Suzyn Waldman and other sanctimonious pricks and prickettes.
  25. 77 wins, thank you very much. And there were nowhere close to 30,000 in the building. The paid attendance figures have as much to do with reality as Rob Parker.
