  1. Just noticed David's point total is totally Amazin'.
  2. Joaquin Arias still a Giant, once a Met.
  3. The Mets are Hollywood's Team, according to the Los Angeles Times in 2000. The mind-boggling "Frequency" stars Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel as a father and son who magically reconnect through the time-space continuum by talking on a ham radio that somehow bridges 30 years. Along the way, they change the course of their family history and prevent a series of murders, thanks in no small part to their mutual love of the 1969 Mets. Key plays from the '69 World Series--including the famous "shoe polish incident"--are pivotal plot links in the film. Of course it's the Mets. Who else could it be? It's no secret that baseball has a certain je ne say hey that Hollywood strives to appropriate whenever possible. But more specifically, when it comes to movie and TV references to the major leagues, the '69 Mets are the team to use when you're trying to invoke a sense of wonderment.

  5. Ooh, one more: Drew Butera, now of the Dodgers (interviewed between innings while fending off a shower of sunflower seeds from his teammates), late of the Twins after the Mets sent him as partial payment for Luis Castillo, the J.J. Putz of second basemen, except longer and more painful.
  6. Super work from Mr. Grimm. Thanks for the tracking, the Topps and the recalculation of my final box score. The success of Duda, Colon and Torres (along with Granderson and, to a certain extent, Wheeler) seems a testament to showing up every day. While the Mets weren't as bereft of six-month players as they were in 2013, there was enough time missed all around to let us reward the guys who were always in action. Well-deserved for Duda. Well-deserved for everybody, I suppose.
  7. A little more on those Omar bagels...
  8. Detroit Nobody Not so fast there, Bill Laxton-breath! Outfielder Ezequiel Carrera was signed out of Venezuela by the Mets in 2005 when he was 17 and made it as high as St. Lucie before he was packaged as part of the three-team blockbusterish deal that made J.J. Putz unfortunate...I mean a Met. Last night the Detroit Tiger reserve notched his first postseason PA, walking as a pinch-hitter in the ninth to load the bases before his Bengals bowed out, 12-3. As Ted Berg pointed out, three different players the Mets sent away in that December 2008 transaction played postseason ball yesterday: Carrera, Joe Smith and Jason Vargas. Hope you enjoyed those bagels, Omar.
  9. The conspiracy theories are running rampant -- and deGrom just got his first endorsement deal as spokesman for Legitimate Beef. "Throw it on the grill when they won't let you throw from the mound."
  10. I feel like Milt Pappas, mathwise.
  11. That Recker's a thing of beauty! Also, nice job on the card.
  12. Torres's month of triumph is marked by a (fine looking) card that portrays his lowest moment of 2014, the walkoff home run he gave up to personal nemesis Kevin Frandsen.
  13. "All right, I shut down deGrom. Now you go keep up your end." --Terry Collins to Lucas Duda, one week ago.
  14. (I'm counting the post directly above as a guess so I don't have to wait any longer.) Tommy Davis.
  15. Not the Cardinals.
  16. I didn't know managers could use anybody besides Carlos Torres prior to the eighth inning.

  18. Mets went 79-83. Nobody here knows anything. Too optimistic: Edgy: 102-59 (+1 rainout on what turned out to be a sunny day) JCL: 93-69 (typed 93-59, assuming this was what he meant) seawolf: 92-70 Ceetar: 89-73 Zvon: 89-73 Ashie 88-74 Kong: 88-74 marathon: 85-77 Ben Grimm 83-79 Gwreck: 82-80 themetfairy: 82-80 TransMonk: 81-81 smg: 81-81 LWFS: 80-82 Not optimistic enough: bmfc: 78-84 G-Fafif 78-84 MFS: 78-84 Lefty Specialist: 77-85 batmags 77-85 Nymr: 75-87 HahnSolo: 73-89

I hadn't been there for years. I see now there's a page for Shea Stadium History. That's nice. But where did they stick the team history page? http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/nym/history/index.jsp

  21. Mets are 78-83, with one remaining. Those who are still not wrong: bmfc: 78-84 G-Fafif 78-84 MFS: 78-84 Too optimistic: Edgy: 102-59 (+1 rainout on what turned out to be a sunny day) JCL: 93-69 (typed 93-59, assuming this was what he meant) seawolf: 92-70 Ceetar: 89-73 Zvon: 89-73 Ashie 88-74 Kong: 88-74 marathon: 85-77 Ben Grimm 83-79 Gwreck: 82-80 themetfairy: 82-80 TransMonk: 81-81 smg: 81-81 LWFS: 80-82 Not optimistic enough: Lefty Specialist: 77-85 batmags 77-85 Nymr: 75-87 HahnSolo: 73-89 So either we have a three-way tie for getting it right or a four-way tie for coming closest (though by The Price Is Right rules, those coming closest without going over...ah, who cares?). FYI, all remaining entrants picked playoffless third place, for which the Mets are guaranteed at least a tie going into Game 162.
