  2. By defeating the Atlanta Braves on September 10, 2015, the New York Mets (79-61) are precisely 18 games over .500 for the first time since September 20, 2008 (86-68). This is also the first time since the end of the 2006 season that the Mets have led the National League East by as many as 7 1/2 games. They finished that year in first place by a dozen games. The last time the Mets were precisely 7 1/2 games in front was June 13, 2006, when their record was 40-23 and the second-place Phillies were 33-31. The Mets were in the midst of sweeping Philadelphia at Citizens Bank Park, making 7 1/2 a one-day pit stop they would exceed for the rest of that season.
  3. David Aardsma's middle name might be Francis, for he was recently DFA'd by ATL.

  5. Unnoticed in his rise through the ranks is Familia's smashing the record for most saves by a homegrown Met reliever, a mark set in 2014 by Jenrry Mejia when he saved 28 games. Before Mejia, the record was held by Tug McGraw, with 27 in 1972. Three days ago I was nervous about unnecessary use of Jeurys in pursuit of the overall franchise standard. Now I'm thinking he can pitch five innings in three weeks.
  6. By sweeping the Washington Nationals deep into second place, the first-place New York Mets, on September 9, 2015, rose to precisely 17 games above .500 for the first time since September 27, 2008, the second-to-last day of that season, best remembered for Johan Santana's three-hit, one-kneed shutout which kept hope flickering to the bitter end. The end isn't in sight yet for the 2015 club, and as far as regular seasons go, I sense no bitterness.
  7. I'm always impressed by the guys who are barely on the team being as excited as anybody with a more obvious stake in the team's success. I remember Billy Taylor, off the 1999 postseason roster, appearing as invested in a great moment versus Arizona or Atlanta (probably Atlanta), as anybody else. I remember Jose Lima, who'd officially been a Met for maybe five minutes, being the most thrilled teammate of all in 2006 when David Wright beat Rivera and the MFYs. And last night, nobody looked happier for Kirk Nieuwenhuis than the freshly arrived, mostly (for now) forgotten Dilson Herrera. Teamwork. It looks so frigging good in blue and orange.

I have this horrible vision of applauding a Jeurys-rigged 44th save and then seeing him lit up when they restart the clock in the part of the year that succeeds the regular season should the Mets be there and Collins being all, "You know, he used a lot of bullets getting to that record, and that was important to him and his agent..." Also have horrible vision of whatever happened to Bobby Thigpen after his 57-save season? But I'd love him to have it. Good call. I just like the idea of him getting a record because it means we're winning games! That would be the best part.

  12. Piscopo would discard offensive garb later that year to get his head bashed in by a properly dressed Lee Mazzilli in a music video with greater staying power.
  13. With their remarkable 8-7 victory over the Washington Nationals on September 8, 2015, the New York Mets rose to precisely 16 games above .500 for the first time since September 28, 2008, the final game of that season (and the stadium in which it was played). For the 2008 Mets, there was no tomorrow. For the 2015 Mets, there appear to be quite a few.
  14. Cripes. The second time was presumably the 1-0 loss to STL from 30 years ago this week. That's very good (well, very bad) stuff.
  15. Only time Seaver was the LP in one of those games?
  16. batmagadanleadoff wrote: First game I ever saw Seaver start in person, the opponent was Andujar. Seaver was brilliant: 8 IP, 11 K, 0 BB, 3 H. All he gave up was a barely fence-clearing line drive homer to Cesar Cedeno in the first. But that was all he had to give up. Andujar threw a complete game shutout and won, 1-0. Couldn't stand the guy in the heat of 1985, of course, but you're not supposed to cotton to the toughest of competitors on your archrivals. There's a cool Mets trivia question in here. Anyone who scours Mets media guides would probably nail the question and the answer before even finishing reading this post. Well now I need to be enlightened. This have something to do with the 1-0 games decided by home runs perennial filler entry?
  17. Morgan Freeman, filming 2016 remake of Going In Style, sporting Mets cap on location downtown.
  18. Cleveland avoids Flushing for the twelfth consecutive regular season. Longest such streak (dating to 2004), now that Blue Jays and Red Sox have made trips.

  20. Last time Mets neither opened nor closed a 162-game regular season at home: 1984. These things can change along the way. In 1994, Mets opened in Chicago and prematurely closed in Philadelphia due to strike. In 1999, Mets opened in Miami and closed the scheduled portion of their regular season at Shea, but then had a tiebreaker to take care of Cincy, which was, technically, their last regular-season game. In 2001, Mets were scheduled to open and close in Atlanta, but because of the postponement of a week's worth of games after 9/11, they ended their season at Shea. So anything can happen, but 2016 -- open in KC, close in Philly -- is shaping up as 32-year first.

  22. We wouldn't have to fully forgive the foibles, but we'd have to readily acknowledge the contributions. Timo catalyzed the Mets in 2 playoff rounds. Armando was lights-out in '99 regular season. Rogers never lost at Shea. The former Brave won a pair of games in '06 postseason. Beltran was Beltran most of the time. Maybe 30 days of goodwill toward Mets until our preferred narratives inevitably take hold again.
  23. 2006.

Last night a friend suggested Mets should pay him a million bucks for the privilege, which reminded me of a posting fee for Japanese free agents. I hope it was a sign of good faith on the player's part. Or that he gets a bigger cut of the t-shirt sales. I'm kinda hoping that the Mets had to pay to waive the clause. Because if so, it's a good sign of the state of the Mets. Good point.
  25. I propose a blanket pardon for all alleged Met villains from Met playoff teams if the Mets win the 2015 World Series. We should be in that good a mood (I include myself and my grudge toward whathisname the former Brave lefty).
