  2. metsmarathon wrote: see, we need to keep the pixie dust off of opposing outfielders so they stop robbing home runs, dangit! If it's not Terry, it's Ray Ramirez. If it's not Ray Ramirez, it's the groundskeepers.
  3. They have to try and get whatever they can out of whoever they can, but I wish they'd stop with the public magical thinking. "DeGrom will start Sunday! Matz will start Friday! Fairy dust will fall everywhere!"
  4. From Kristie Ackert: More bad news for the Mets: Steven Matz will not pitch Friday against the Phillies. The lefthander experienced shoulder discomfort after Wednesday's bullpen session. The Mets will wait a few days and try again, but this likely rules him out for any potential playoff game. Mets manager Terry Collins said the team will "discuss all options and decide the option for Steven." "This winter we got to get a rehab program to strengthen his arm, his back and elbow," Collins said. "It's got to be a focus."
  5. Adam Rubin noted last time Mets lost on game-ending HR robbery was May 16, 2014, Werth robbing Murph in DC, Mets down by three with two on and two out. What would have been 5-5 ended at 5-2.
  6. Jay's last 12 games, which have encompassed 10 starts: 3 singles in 38 at-bats, 1 RBI, 5 walks. The Mets have played 15 games in that span, so he hasn't been used at all in three of them and was limited to PH'ing in two of them.

September sure makes strange Metfellows.
  8. The first game of autumn: Phillies at Mets, Thursday night, 7:10 PM, Adam Morgan vs. Seth Lugo. Mets look to shake off their three-game yeech. Great idea. nfWlot6h_JM On the other side of the continent, at 10:10 PM, the Giants visit the Padres. The Cardinals are off before starting a weekend series at Wrigley. The three Wild Card contenders are 80-72. Win each series and the Mets finish 87-75. But win the first game of this series first.
  9. Dodgers pound Giants. All is as well as can be.
  10. Second night in a row bearing witness to The Worst Loss Ever (Parts Infinity & Infinity 2.0). Stayed in my seats staring into space for several minutes thereafter. Weather was nice.

Gsellman being unable to hit didn't help. Tony Randazzo didn't help. Good games for Cabrera ad Big Jim Henderson, tho, so there's that. You were at the game tonight? How big was the crowd? And by that I mean head-count, not the fantasy island numbers the Mets put out. Because the crowd looked small on the TV and what with the Mets being in a pennant race and all, I was wondering about the crowd size and why it looked so small. I was there as well (as was, not far from me, D.J. Short; we could have recreated Word Books magic). They said 30,000. It wasn't actually far off from that. Place filled in as the night went on. There were some college groups that took up seats. And there were gnats circling the right field promenade, though I don't think they count in the attendance. There was a nice "LGM!" refrain heading down the steps after the loss, which was a first in my recollection. Then again, there was the pronouncement in the postgame men's room line that "Cespedes has had a shit year." Yeah, based on his most recent at-bat, absolutely. Not an inspiring affair, but PH'ing for Bruce almost made it a moral victory.
  12. A Mets hoodie, with Kevin James inside it, appeared in the premiere of James's new unnecessary series, Kevin James Does Other Things Besides Wear a Mets Hoodie on CBS, September 19, 2016.

Antonelli came close to becoming a Met. That's right. Must've broken Mrs. Payson's heart. Didn't realize until just having looked it up that Johnny managed in the Met system (or chain, as Topps liked to say) for seven seasons.
  15. Edgy MD wrote: A rainout tonight, a wife goes into labor, somebody wakes up with pink eye, and it all goes to shit. And so I conclude with the main takeaways. The whole bit relies, of course, on speculation. Informed speculation, but speculation nonetheless. I admire the effort, but I am reminded that every time someone with whom I'm going to a game a week out says to me, "We're gonna see [hot pitcher of the moment]," we wind up instead with [Jon Niese].

  17. Twenty-two New York Giants remain with us, including the two who became New York Mets -- Willie Mays and Eddie Bressoud. The other surviving big fellas: Foster Castleman Joe Margoneri Joe Amalfitano Bill White Red Schoendienst Al Worthington Ron Samford Johnny Antonelli Jackie Brandt Ozzie Virgil Call Your Sister Gil Coan Harvey Gentry Wayner Terwilliger Pete Burnside Daryl Spencer Windy McCall Billy Gardner Ray Crone Roy Wright Mike McCormick Three major league managers (Gardner, Schoendienst, Amalfitano), one Cy Young winner (McCormick), one who would have won one had it been invented (Antonelli), a league president (White), and two immortalized in The Great American Baseball Card Flipping, Trading and Bubble Gum Book. Of course a ballplayer with a name like this is never going to amount to anything. If you have a name like an orthodontist, you're going to play like an orthodontist. I mean, where's the chance for a colorful nickname here? Foster "Night Train" Castleman? Foster "Big Daddy" Castleman? Not on your life. Everybody remembers Wayne Terwilliger. But nobody can remember exactly why. Wayne was the perfect utility man. He couldn't hit his hat size, but he could field every position. He wouldn't help you out very much, but he wouldn't embarrass you either. He had a good disposition, was always sober, and liked to pitch batting practice -- in other words, a manager's dream. He also looked like a utility man -- he had a utility man's face, a utility man's build, and a utility man's outlook on life. And certainly no one could argue the fact that he had a utility man's name. He always looked to me like the sort of guy you might send for to unplug a drain in a large apartment house.
  18. Game of the Year, until the next one.
  19. Twin Kurt Suzuki homered at Citi Field as an Athletic and a National. I'd be wary of anybody who shows that kind of power as an adjective.
  20. Zvon wrote: I actually felt like some kind of authority when I could whip a Baseball Digest out of the back pocket of my jeans during a baseball discussion down in the playground. Teacher warned us about kids like you, always whipping it out in the schoolyard.
  21. Gotta beat Those Twins. [youtube:2zl36w6x]nrBMvsVht1I[/youtube:2zl36w6x] Here's to Mets baseball.
  22. My dad bought me my first Sporting News the week I graduated elementary school. The Cubs "Three M's" were on the cover: Mitterwald, Morales, Madlock. He offered to get me a subscription; "It's the Bible of Baseball," he told me (a description a little out of code by then). I declined, mostly because I enjoyed going to the Cozy Nook and purchasing it every week. I had a sub to the Digest after having read it off and on for 2 1/2 years, but would get antsy when an issue hit the stands before it arrived in my mailbox. Once I was so overcome with impatience that I bought it ahead of delivery, which annoyed my mother. Once I went to college, I subscribed to TSN and continued for ten years until it became useless and I switched to SI, which I still take 25 years later.
  23. George Vass wrote virtually every article that wasn't excerpted from elsewhere. According to my biased memory, he didn't give the Mets enough respect. I collected every issue from November 1974 to December 1987 before giving up the ghost. Its publication was the monthly highlight of my young life. When I last saw it, it stopped being digest-sized.
  24. Helluva parting gift for Walker if in fact he Walkers away. His last swing was for a home run. Those cards are nice prizes, too.
  25. bmfc1 wrote: (I'm including COL and AZ as the "west coast" for late night TV purposes, don't bust my chops): Many of us grew up being told Atlanta and Cincinnati were situated west of Chicago and St. Louis, so you're already doing way better in geography than Bowie Kuhn.
