  1. Deadspin link here. What an incredible and sad story.
  2. Cubs are bidding to become only the second team to be eliminated by the Mets in the postseason one year and win the World Series the next. I'm going with that as my storyline of choice, though I have nothing against the Tribe and would be very happy on behalf of a friend who's been rooting for Cleveland since the days of Leon "Daddy Wags" Wagner. Move over 1970 Orioles. You might have company in learning how to win from a Mets team that took you to school.
  3. A hunch that it goes back to Cleveland, but not to the home folks' satisfaction. 1948 becomes the new 1908.

Being that footage of regular season games was rarely preserved back then, I was surpriseed to see so much footage of the actual game where the Pirates started an all black/latino nine. There was even pre-game or batting practice footage of that game. But after thinking about it, I figured that whoever was in charge of deciding whether or not to save game film recognized the historical significance of that game, and decided to save footage, just like Pirates footage from the following season, albeit limited, exists of Clemente's 3,000th hit. A lot of Opening Day 1971 footage seemed to get repurposed. That was the Phillies at Three Rivers, so it conveniently fit the parameters of the historic game five months later.

But when the narrative got to the 1970 playoffs (that's what playoffs were called back then --- playoffs) where the Reds beat the Pirates to take the NL pennant, the footage was of Joe Morgan batting against Pittsburgh. Morgan was an Astro in 1970, traded to Cincy during the off-season in between the '71 and '72 seasons. The same off-season that yielded the Ryan for Fregosi trade. Morgan's insertion from two years later was a little distracting, and you wish there had been more footage than postseason and a handful of games otherwise, but I thought the whole thing was well done, telling the story it wanted to tell. Though it had nothing to do with the theme, I thought it an exclusion to not mention that Game Four of the World Series was the first one at night, a huge deal at the time and a harbinger of what was to come. "A prime time audience was about to see what Pittsburgh had known all along..." or something like that.

  7. Batmags a big fan of that team.
  8. "Forever Brothers," a documentary about the '71 Pirates, airs tonight after NLCS Game One on FS1 and tomorrow at 5 PM, same channel. I know this topic hits a non-Mets sweet spot for at least one of you and figure it might be of demographic (and baseball) interest to others. http://triblive.com/sports/pirates/11304430-74/fuqua-pirates-pittsburgh
  9. Maybe they should keep the rosters at 25 in September and expand them to 40 in October.

  11. Cecchini appears to have gotten his own color scheme. Was there a 1975 card that looked like that? Great work to reflect a great month!
  12. Congratulations Yo, Noah, Jeurys and KelJo. You, too, Grimm. Thank you for breathing new life into an old classic. As they say in Chicago, it was a pleasure voting 162 times.

Could have cleared a much easier path for us had they bothered to win only 1 of their goddamn games vs. the Giants last weekend. I sure as hell don;t like the nationals but will tip my cap to them as they took a hellacious beating last year from the Mets, made an honest effort to fix the problems they thought they had, then proved over a long season they did. If they happen to beat the living shit out of the Dodgers in this series, boo hoo for the fucking Dodgers. I feel about them like I feel about Milwaukee when they had a chance to all but eliminate Philadelphia one of those years we didn't make the playoffs (08 I think?). If they'd only beaten them once, everything would be different. I've hated them for 8 years because of that. The Brewers beat us out of the Wild Card in 2008, which was reason enough to resent them, but they were just doing their job in that case. As for the Dodgers fucking themselves, I'd like to think Vin Scully would come out of retirement to announce that.
  15. Thor rocks as much as a human can rock. He also pitches quite well. My recollection of the Dickey trade, as we called it then, was it was generally bemoaned that R.A. was leaving us, yet simultaneously it was marveled that wow, we were getting quite a haul in return.
  16. I wanted, at minimum, to win last night and then not get swept by the Cubs, preferring to take the NLDS back to Wrigley so nobody who wasn't the Mets would be celebrating at Citi Field. Anything else would be a jar of gravy. So much for that plan. I'm satisfied the Mets got as far as they did. It's gonna gnaw at me as I glimpse at the series ahead. Don't know how much I can watch knowing we were there, but now we're gone. One of the strangest realizations came as it occurred to me that two years ago I was watching the Royals and Giants in the World Series, never dreaming that in the course of the next two postseasons, a) we'd be playing in both of them and the teams from 2014 would serve as our respective final obstacles in 2015 and 2016.
  17. Yesterday morning was chilly enough for Mrs. Fafif to wear a jacket she apparently hadn't worn since the night of June 15, at Citi Field, because when she stuck a hand in one of the pockets, she found the ticket from that evening's game, which the Mets won on the strength of Thor strikiing out 11. She handed me the ticket, which I am keeping on me for the duration.
  18. Marc Carig reports Mets not convinced Lucas isn't rusty (if not Rusty), but that they anticipate him being on the NLDS roster if there is an NLDS roster.
  19. Nimmo did some solid pinch-hitting in September, minuscule sample size notwithstanding. I wonder how much of a lock Conforto was over him.
  20. Mets by acclamation, once the junior circuit realizes what it's up against.

We'll celebrate Tuesday night and Thursday night. All Poolers are celebrating Mrs. JCL's special day? For solidarity's sake, I'm in. It'll be our version of playoff beards.

  25. Bottom of the first brought to you by Billy Swift as well.
