MOVIE REPORT TO MAKE UP FOR MISSED ASSIGNMENT By Jesse Russell Orosco Today in music class, Mrs. Jarvis showed us a movie. I think she was tired of teaching us keyboard exercises. The movie had lots of action. The people ran all over the field. It was pretty exciting. There were many characters. I didn't catch all of their names, but they were all real good. They were kind of hard to see but you could tell they were good because all of the people running all over the field seemed really happy, so it must have been the characters who made them that way. There were also lots of lights in the background with letters and numbers. I liked the movie. So did my friends Keith and Darryl who are in my class. I would give the movie an A. I hope this makes up for my missed assignment and I and Keith and Darryl can be allowed to go back to baseball practice, which we probably like better, but someday I wouldn't mind being in a movie like the one Mrs. Jarvis showed us in music class today. It looks like a lot of fun. -

Yearbook Cover Derby Round 2.03 1985 vs 2011

"Hey, Davey, look! I'm perfecting my curveball! Hey!" "It's no use, Doc." "Why not, Keith? Davey's the manager. How come we can't get his attention?" "Davey dabbles in real estate in the offseason and he's mesmerized by that new development." "Metsmerized?" "That's not a word, Doc." "Try telling that to George. He's been walking around the clubhouse muttering it to himself." "Mesmerized. Fascinated. Distracted. Davey's mind is not on our drills." "What's so great about what he's looking at instead of us? I'm the Rookie of the Year and you just won another Gold Glove. We're the Rising Stars!" "I dunno, Doc. That brochure he got in the mail has got a very sleek picture on the cover." "What's it called? The development?" "2011 Yearbook. Must be one of those fancy places where they use the address as the name." "I thought all the best places had the developer's name on it, like that rich guy who owns the Generals." "That man's going places. I'd love to be invited to one of his New Year's Eve parties. Maybe someday if I network enough. Listen, I only glanced at the brochure, but 2011 Yearbook seems pretty popular. Lotta people. Lotta grass, too. I think I see something about a "city" spelled weird." "So Davey's into gentrification?" "Gentrification used to pitch here. Gary Gentrification." "Huh?" "Forget it, Doc. Kind of a joke. I keep forgetting how young you are." "Davey's forgetting about us. He just keeps looking away no matter how hard I throw, no matter how ready you are to pounce on the next grounder that tries to get by you." "Don't worry about Davey. It's like Lou Brock used to tell me..." "Another Lou Brock story, Keith?" "You youngsters get away with so much sass these days. Bob Gibson wouldn't let me drink in the same bar as the rest of the team when I was at your stage." "Did you win 17 games as a rookie?" "Good point, Doc. I don't know about 2011 Yearbook, but I do know we have quite a team shaping up this year. We're gonna look sleek in these racing stripes, too. Sleeker than any real estate brochure." "Why don't we get Gary and Darryl and some of the other guys over here? Maybe Jay could get somebody to take a picture of a whole bunch of us, really get the fans excited about the coming season." "Nah, we have a pretty good duo for now. A trio, counting Davey. We'll get his attention eventually. It's 1985, we'll get everybody's attention real soon." -
What's Happening in the Mets HOF?

Thanks for finding that article. I remembered it but couldn't recall from where. Tina Mannix was announced as a member of the Mets Hall's reconstituted voting committee in 2010. As mentioned in previous threads, she (apparently) left the organization a couple of years later, based on her disappearance from the media guide listings and such. She must have been the museum and HOF's champion internally, a role that hasn't been effectively taken up by anybody else. -

It's a very nice if small space and it is imbued with a foundational Metsian vibe. It just needs more -- more stuff, more thought, more dynamism. It's charming if you visit it once. It's relentlessly disappointing if you come back year after year. -

The McDonald household, winter 1977: "Son, your mother wants me to talk to you about your schoolwork. Your teachers say you're capable but don't take it seriously. Here's what your math teacher wrote on your report card: 'Jody shows skills, but working out the odds on the Flamingo Stakes at Hialeah was not the assignment.' I appreciate how much you love sports -- and I'll take your tip on Seattle Slew to win the Triple Crown under advisement. But there's a time and place for everything. It's not like you can get a job where you drone on endlessly about sports hour after hour. "Obviously I make a living at sports, but it's not easy. You should have options so you don't get stuck dealing with the kind of nonsense I have to. For example, you'd think putting together a roster for the upcoming season would be enough of a job. Let me tell you, it would be a lot easier if Mr. Grant would let me pursue one of these new free agents. Yet I have all this ancillary business on my desk, too. I'm supposed to find a cover for the official yearbook. Mr. Grant is still upset about last year's design. He doesn't care to be reminded of the American Revolution. 'Puts ideas in the players' heads,' he said. "I thought we could just have Seaver pose with baseballs again, but Mr. Grant isn't too happy with Seaver. Plus he didn't like that I billed the organization for the 39 cents worth of Fun-Tak to keep the balls in place last time. Well, I said, what if we have Kingman pose with 37 bats? We already have the bats in-house. But no, Mr. Grant is not happy with Kingman, either. So in addition to trying to replace Lolich and find some speed for the bench, I have to worry about something as trifling as the yearbook and not spend an extra dime on it. Mr. Grant is a good man, Jody, but between you and me, he's been out of control since Mrs. Payson passed away. "I'm sorry, I'm off track here. I'm supposed to be focusing on your schoolwork. I understand that for the current events portion of your social studies class you turned in a collage of Jerry Koosman's 20th win from last September. Son, come on. I was happy for Jerry, we were all happy for Jerry, but at a time when there's a new president and he's declaring the energy crisis the moral equivalent of war, you focus on this? Let me see your project...what did you make this out of? Those extra pictures I brought home? "Y'know something, Jody, this is pretty good for a junior high kid. You've got the scoreboard and his family, and the head shot in the middle tying it together. Do you mind if I borrow this? Listen, try to do better in school, OK? Here's your allowance, and here's ten for you to put on that horse in the Wood Memorial. This is fine work, Jody. I look forward to showing it to your mother and Mr. Grant and maybe the two million people we expect through the turnstiles this year assuming I get to keep a good roster together." *** The Phillips pied-a-terre, winter 2002: "Oh right, baby, you wanted to show me something on your laptop. I'd like a better look at your 'laptop,' too, heh-heh. Sorry, sorry, I'll take you seriously. Turn on the light and hand me my glasses. What is it? "Hey, not bad! You really can do graphic design. Not all the interns I bring back here are this good at their jobs. What's that in the middle? Forty years? Really? 2002 minus 1962...yeah, I guess it is the 40th anniversary. Funny, nobody at work mentioned it. You'd think somebody in the promotions department would want to make a fuss over something like that. I think I saw a picture once from '86 of an anniversary patch. Say, you were born by 1986, weren't you? Because you better tell me if you weren't. "Yes, yes, you're in college, you're over 18. Anyway, I like what you did here. You took a little from each era, except for a couple of the really bad ones, and you tied it together with the present. Maybe you wanna do a little 'tying together' later, huh? Aw, don't be like that. I'm taking your work very seriously. "I'll show you how seriously. I'm going to take this into the office and recommend it for the next yearbook cover. Sure, why not? I don't think anybody else there has thought about it and it looks good. It's got the past, it's got the present. Maybe not the future, but I don't worry about that. Between you and me, I've got a couple calls out where I'm dangling those kid minor league left-side infielders for a veteran bat. The future is now, baby, and it's ready to come right at you. How about turning off that light now and... "Kidding! Just kidding! But I'm serious about the yearbook cover. I'm definitely going to show this to Nelson and Fred and, I suppose, Jeff. When you see it at the souvenir stands this season, you and I will know how it got on there, but promise me one thing: don't tell my wife about it, capeesh?" -

Except for a couple of fairly recent artifacts swapped out for other fairly recent artifacts in the primary display case facing the salute to Mets ballparks, there is nothing new in there this year. More static than usual. -

Benjamin Grimm wrote: G-Fafif wrote: Baby Met finished 60 1/2 games out of first place That extra half game in the standings always seemed particularly gratuitous to me. The half-game was a function of the three-game pennant playoff between the Dodgers and Giants, those entities whose departure from New York made the Mets necessary. The 1962 Mets ceased to exist and kept losing ground. Baby Met romped to a 21-0 victory in the first round, but is facing a little bit of opposition this time. The Post speculates the "SUPERBABY" hype is getting to 1962, especially since it was seen stumbling around at the Polo Grounds opening. -

Birth dates of those pictured in this round: Bobby Ojeda: 12/17/1957 Frank Viola: 4/19/1960 Ron Darling: 8/19/1960 Baby Met: 4/11/1962 Sid Fernandez: 10/12/1962 David Cone: 1/2/1963 Dwight Gooden: 11/16/1964 So they're all practically contemporaries. Depending on the vagaries of the school district and the parents, it's possible Baby Met, Fernandez and Cone started kindergarten together. They probably ran into each other around the playground on sunny afternoons as they got older. The six pitchers showed proper pitching form as they entered their age somewhere between 25 and 33 seasons. Baby Met's supreme challenge was standing up. And he did it! In 1990, Ojeda, Viola, Darling, Fernandez, Cone and Gooden combined to post 76 of the Mets' 91 wins. In 1962, Baby Met won 40 games all by himself. He must have had no help. The 1990 Mets finished four games out of first place after a rough start that got Davey Johnson fired. Baby Met finished 60 1/2 games out of first place, but Casey Stengel was trusted to keep raising him for a few more years. Six pitchers for six dollars. One scamp for a half-buck. Excellent use of white space twenty-eight years apart. Nice logo twenty-eight years apart. I'm going with the kid. He appears to have greater upside. -
